Need an inexpensive standard reach brake

I am in the process of building up a 1978 Trek for my son on a tight budget. Looking for a reasonably priced (defiantly used) standard reach brake. The bike has the earlier style mounting bolts without the recessed shoulder style bolts. Also needs to have the cable adjustment on the brake as I am planning to run aero levers.

Please chime in with your favorite brakes that would fit my needs.

Thanks

Dave

...Tektro pretty much rules the inexpensive brake market right now.

They have stuff available from various online sellers in every reach you can expect to want.
AFAIK, there is no "standard reach", so do some measuring before you buy anything.

If you want to go period correct, then the ubiquitous Dia Compe/Weinmann centerpulls are practically free. If you have a local bike co-op or vintage friendly bike shop, they should have a bin full of take-offs. Members here, including me, typically have a few in our parts stashes as well.

If I go with center pulls how would I adjust the cables if I run aero brake levers? I already have a pair of Mafac racers but there is no provision for cable adjustment.

thanks for the input

Often you can find cable hangers with an adjuster barrel built in.

If you want period correct and cheap sidepulls, Weinmann 500s would work. Not the best performance but they work good enough.... Just remember to get the later ones with the quick releases on them to add some convenience...
Modolo made affordable brakesets below the Speedy model like the "Strada", IIRC. Pretty much very similar to Speedys, but with less refined finishes and should also work good enough.... Lots of them pop up at eBay...

+1

Barrel adjusters in the cable hanger are very common with centerpulls. Of course, when you're scrounging for brake hangers, the adjuster may have gone missing, but I expect it shouldn't be difficult to scrounge up a replacement adjuster.

If you already have MAFAC Racers, yer good to go, all you need are barrel adjusters for the cable hangers.
