One more and couldn't resist. Just returned tonight with a CL 'Stumpster' for $40. Well worth the Chicago rush hour traffic, right next to O'Hare and of all the timing, the monarchy happens to arrives

Its a very early Stumpjumper with Tange Prestige ('Direct-Drive' ?) tubing. Shimano Deore LX w/ thumbies. Bridged steel fork. Frame is fitted for the early 26" road bike wheels. The only oddity is the swapped out stem and upright BMX type bar. Package came with extras for some of my other budget builds. Any thoughts on what year it is?
Sorry for the quick pics in the dark but the bike is a dark burgundy color w/ black fork.
edit: Discovered the serial dating to 1993. Not sure if the bi-plane crown fork is correct for the year but I like it.

Today marks the 100th day of the challenge. I'm putting it out to the c&vers to determine a winner but I have a couple in mind myself.
Although this marks the end of the 100 days, I feel it should stay open as a thread to post your inexpensive riders on a shoestring budget to show just what can be done with limited funds.

I had fun too. Has anyone bothered to count how many entries were completed?
Since making the 100km mark on 5/7, I've surpassed the 100 miles mark on the Trek MT 700. To celebrate, I replaced the saddle with a VO Model 3, seat post, seat post QR, and Tektro Oryx brake to match the front. Always practical to slap a $100 saddle on a $25 bike.

OK...this is going to be my entry. I just paid $10 for this Shogun as you see it. I think that it needs just a little bit of tuning and it will be good to go. Everything appears to work and operate and the tires hold air.

This is my choice for thread winner. This journal entry was the kicker. Not only did it start as a dumpster diver with moss in the dropouts and the baby seat, the devotion to an entire century and these snippets:

OK, I think I may be done here, Friday I completed a one-shot 101.9 km ride on my clunker. As loaded it was within spitting distance of 40lbs. A full metric century of what felt like riding through a couple inches of sand. (Except the descents, they were great.) More details and pix on the "Where'd you ride today" thread.
I caught the bus out to Forks, WA (Yes, the land of romantic teen vampires!) then rode back home 63 miles to Port Angeles, by way of beautiful Lake Crescent, a mix of highway and trail riding. I'm thinking I may never ride this bike again; certainly not any distance like that, anyway. Those last uphill stretches just seemed never ending and this is the only ride I've clocked that had an average speed of less than 10mph.
Plenty of nice scenery along the way, but I could have enjoyed it just as well or better on a lighter bike.
Apart from being a trudging, joyless tank to pedal, the clunker held up well and got me home without incident.
Slowly.

@oddjob2 - what model GT did you get? I just bought a 1989 GT All Terrain Tequestra with all original parts except tires! Color is Pink Smoke. Offered the kid $40 (was selling it for $50). I would Totally LOVE a summer Klunker Challenge! I'll make sure not to spend a dime over $100 on this thing.

EPILOGUE: Since many of you have shown appreciation for my Dumpster Darling Redline, you'll be happy to know it has gone on to another, hopefully more appreciative owner.
I put flat bars back on it, swapped in a saddle and a less-bent RD from the junk bin, took off the rack for my next drop bar bike and dumped the thing on CL:
Took almost a week to sell, but the first guy to actually come by and look at it took it.

That $10 Shogun is amazing. Good candidate for a drop bar conversion.
The clunker challenge indeed was fun. Since then I've had a few more unmentionable's pass through my hands. Name brand's, fixed up and gifted away or only for my cost. The only loss is the time. Disposable parts gets them up and working good in short time - chain's, cable kits, pad's, rubber is ridiculous cheap from fleabay China. I don't know how they do it but as an example $3 tape, $4 for 4 pads, $7 pair of Schwinn frt. / rear led blinkies - NO TAX - SHIPPED! But its easy to see how they retail $100 bikes at the big chain stores. Aluminum ally frames, index shifters, wheels, tires, derailleurs, etc....
Also, I've actually had a two LBS kind enough to toss a few parts my way. Sort of sad in a way that we're in a disposable society and thinking of the millions of bikes tossed to scrap.

I think I will use either of the 2 below,
Marin Muirwoods frame and fork cost me $12 NZ, I have a wheel set from a bike that I sold the frame of for more than I purchased the whole bike for.
This Carlton Corsa 5 is another cheapo, $10 with another bike, the other bike sold for $20, so I could say the this bike cost me $5? I have a wheel set from another bike that I sold the frame and fork for twice what I paid for the whole bike( Centurion Lemans payed $40 for it, sold frame fork for $80)
I think I will go with the Carlton, what do you guys think?
