People climb mountains because they are there. Why does Bayliss make a tribute, because he can.
As for "better", the way you are defining it is subjective. DD pointed out, the clover cutouts are different and while you don't consider the form "better", I'd guess others may have a different opinion. There is no doubt that the filing, brazing and paint is better (objectively) than the original.
And while I share your no interest in this bike, I think asking why serves little purpose. I prefer the Lemonheads version of Mrs. Robinson, but I don't think it makes it better than Simon and Garfunkel.

Where do you stand on The Bangles Hazy Shade of Winter?
Agree on Lemonheads/Evan Dando - killer cover.

The originals are good but I like both covers better, particularly the Bangles. How about The Hooter's cover of "500 miles?"

Love The Bangles...
I'm a Philly kid who grew up in the 80s, we are contractually obligated to like the hooters.

Ok good, for a second there I thought I was the only one who wouldn't want a reproduction. I'm not hating on the bike per se but rather that it's "pretending" to be something else. If I liked this Brian guy then I would want one of his original creations for that much money. Just my 2 cents

I didn't care for the covers she did with Matthew Sweet...thought that was a waste of their talents...by otherwise, she's pretty awesome.

Glad this has morphed into a Bangles thread. "All Over the Place" is a stone classic, and their latest is actually not far off the mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwrmU4nZIhE
And I've always dug this surf/fuzz slab of coolness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw72WKKn_bg
Oh, also: bikes, yaay!

Speaking of covers - this is one of my favorites...
Zevon is in my tip top favorite song writer class and the pixies were THE band of my youth. It's a match made in heaven for me. What's interesting is that it's one of the few Zevon songs I don't much care for, but I LOVE the cover.

There are a number of details that are a bit different than other Colnagos Brian has done. The seat stay tops are a bit different than the originals, longer flutes. My guess probably actual caps rather than plugs. The fork crown lacks the Colnago clover. The downtube lug window reads Colnago but is a bit different too.
The frame has short rear dropouts and a brazed on front mechanism.
The details used are over a wide period of Colnago production.

I'm not necessarily saying this is good, bad or ugly but...
People keep saying "for that amount of money" I would rather have a "real" Baylis. Right now the bid is $1025 and reserve has been met. I don't know where it will get to but $1025 is not a lot of money for a fine bicycle, much less a Baylis built frame. Second you can't get a new custom built Baylis at all anymore, he is retired, so no amount of money will get you a new custom Baylis. Third, even if you do find an existing Baylis that fits you you will be very unlikely to get it for under a couple thousand. So I really don't think the economics are that bad at all, at least at the current bid. I agree though that if you really wanted a Baylis this really isn't likely to be what you want. Same if you really want a Colnago. But if the bid stays low I think it is a great deal on a set of decent, period correct components, including some Colnago panto ones, and a frame made and painted by a master frame builder and painter.

Huh? Was there an earlier version of this auction that had a much higher price? Ah I see there was. Yes the original $4500 asking price would have been way too high. But it is now listed in open auction and the bid is only $1025. Baylis originals go for MUCH higher. I have seen Baylis framesets alone sell for over $2000. Some of you clearly aren't familiar with Brian's work but he is considered one of the American masters. Maybe not quite an Eisentraut or Sachs but real, real close.

Actually I meant it as you are stating...I guess I should of said they don't go for that little money, assuming the final price is ~$1K +.
