Poll closed - only 40 votes?
My DeRosa Pro would be hard to improve upon - for me, anyway.

Cougrrcj 03-06-14 09:02 PM

Well, since I have not developed a 35+ year relationship with any of the listed bikes, I'd grab my 'unworthy of this list' S-10S...

The Paramount. Duh.

Biased? I mean, in any way?

Auchen - this is hard, we need the years. For instance, if it's a pre-Columbus Cinelli, that's different than later...is it a pre-IC lug De Rosa? A later Sachs?

Also - should I assume that the customs on the list were custom for me?

Just assume all these bikes are the creme de la creme, and the customs were spec'd and molded to to fit you like your own skin.
- in your favored colors too.

I didn't say this would be easy.

KonAaron Snake 03-07-14 05:30 AM

I'd take the Sachs - the De Rosa and Cinelli I'd want wouldn't be custom when I was alive.

Italuminium 03-07-14 05:33 AM

Dicky S., red ones go faster. And ATMO the RS is the only on the list that's truly collectible, i.e. not (semi) mass produced. And I like the RS style a lot anyway.

KonAaron Snake 03-07-14 06:01 AM

Ital - when you get into the older De Rosas, they're even less common than a Sachs - and they weren't made in much larger numbers either. The same is true, to an extent, of older Cinellis. Many Cinellis and De Rosas were customs up through the 70s. I'm fairly certain that Hetchins has always been small batch custom as well, not production.

Of the bikes I actually own, I'd save the Merckx, even if it's far from my favorite to ride. That bike is legitimately historic, even if I can't tie it into a specific event. The others are more replaceable, except maybe the Cinelli fenders. I can buy another Marnati - you can't just buy a prominent team member's Motorola Merckx in camouflage tubing.

jimmuller 03-07-14 06:36 AM

I see two yellow ones, two red ones, two blue ones. Only one turquoise, purple, green, or white. It looks like the white Gitane Olympic is the clear winner, followed by the turquoise Hetchins. I'd probably have saved a red one.

iab 03-07-14 07:01 AM

Since the Hetchins is the Liberace of bikes, is that why it won the poll? It is the one most likely seen through the smoke?

Right you are, but model year is not specified in the poll :) off course a low-serial number De Rosa/'Nago made for a certain Belgian dude is something else than an 80's überfred De Rosa. Your Merckx is definitely a bike worth saving.

The elitists are out.
"RS is the only one collectible"
"...an 80s uberfred DeRosa"
"...you can't just buy a prominent team members Motorola Merckx....

gomango 03-07-14 11:39 AM

Discerning, not elitist.imho

Also, more knowledgable than many. Nothing wrong with that.

Ok, funny story time. See the mismatched fork on Dad's Moto? He got hit by a car in about 1977. Rather than spend all the settlement money on a proper Moto fork, he took a random blue one off the shelf and used the money he saved to buy a Sunfish.
That's why they call me Sailorbenjamin

I'm very lucky ------------- my little brother is a plumber ------------------- we just got thru setting up a HD sprinkler in my garage...................

I'd love to hear how that comment is elitist. It's simple truth - the other bikes I own are more easily replaceable. The Merckx is not my favorite bike, nor is it any better in terms of build quality, but it is special in that there aren't many Motorola bikes with provenance. I can't replace the Merckx, I can replace a De Rosa.

No disagreement.

Edit: in fact, your collection of bicycles is quite elite. As are more than a few others.

noglider 03-07-14 01:56 PM

I guess I should save the Cinelli, though my first instinct was to say the Richard Sachs.

I'd save the Maclean Tom. I don't remember you having a Cinelli...is that new?

Plenty here have nicer, but I'm very happy with what I have.

gaucho777 03-07-14 02:10 PM

I would die clutching them all, tears falling on the red one.

noglider 03-07-14 03:01 PM

Aaron, I thought my choices were from the original post. I still have the McLean, but I hardly ever ride it any more. :-(

That's a shame.

Such a special bicycle. IMHO

3alarmer 03-07-14 03:26 PM

this thread reminds me of:

A fred was walking down the sidewalk one day when his friend, another fred, rode up on an incredible shiny new bicycle.

The first fred was stunned by his friend's sweet ride and asked, "WOW! Where did you get such a nice bike?"

The second fred replied, "Well, yesterday I was walking home, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up to me on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, 'Take what you want!'"

The second fred nodded approvingly, "Good choice. The clothes probably wouldn't have fit."

Thank you!

I have ideas for it. I think I'll put lighter wheels on it and figure out what's wrong with the fit. I realized there's something wrong when I noticed my other bikes don't fatigue me as much.

I have other projects higher up in the queue, so it might be a while.
