a big fire breaks out

Imagine, if you will, a big fire breaks out in the warehouse where you store your most treasured bikes ... Each one is in perfect condition and representative of the most desirable period for that model.

There is only time to save one of them, and only a split second to decide.

- They're all arranged in alphabetical order, and all equidistant from the door through which you must make your escape.

Which one do YOU grab?

PS - This is an anonymous poll unless you care to explain yourself.

.
...is there a Schwinn Varsity I can use to break down the doors ?

As bianchigirl would say "Save them all..."

photogravity 03-02-14 07:24 PM

For me, it would have to be the Hetchins. Other than the Raleighs, which are semi-ordinary, the remaining choices aren't English. I'm a known Anglophile when it comes to my bicycles.

PedalTraveler 03-02-14 07:28 PM

If I had all those bikes, and there was a fire, I think I'd go down with the ship, so to speak.

the Hetchins, if I had to...

sloar 03-02-14 07:30 PM

Well, since i have a whole fire crew with me, we grab them all.

sailorbenjamin 03-02-14 07:31 PM

Well, since Dad bought the Moto new in '72, it'd have to be that one.

JJScaliger 03-02-14 07:34 PM

The Hetchins for me. An easy choice. (Sachs #2 )

auchencrow 03-02-14 07:35 PM

I'd like to know which one you persnickety sons-of-guns arranges your bikes in alphabetical order?

- And remember - you only get to save one!

bigfred 03-02-14 07:38 PM

"Rosebud". The 80s Merckx that I was the second owner of. Which was my first Really, Truly, "Good" bike, ie Columbus tubing, Campy SR. And which I've managed to hang onto since.

Sorry, no matter how pristine their condition, none of your list have the memories attached to them that my old, scratched, used and raced bike has.

Most guys buy a classic to remind them of their youth or of a period. I happen to be lucky enough to have "the" bike.

Yeah, I know I left out a lot of great bikes.
Maybe there ought'a be another fire, with someone else making up the list. It wasn't so easy to choose

rhm 03-02-14 07:48 PM

Honestly, if you had phrased this poll differently, so it was just about which RRA I would save ---
--the first version, early 193ös, before there was 531....
--the second version, late 1930s, 531 and an early FW hub...
--the classic version, 1946-1953, 531 and all kinds of unique components made just for this model...
-the astonishing early 1970s one with top notch francophile components...
--the total crap hi ten steel one from the late 70s...
--or whatever else they've offered under that name...
I'd be at a total loss, probably die trying to save two or three at once. All I know is which ones I wouldn't save.

But I'll admit I'd also grab the cinelli if I could.

I deliberately left out the years and stated only that each model was "representative of the most desirable period" for the very reason you cite.
Not ever year-model has equal stature, but we all have our opinions on which are the most desirable.

rhm 03-02-14 08:05 PM

Oops, I forgot to add the obvious: if Richard Sachs was in the fire, I'd let him grab whatever he wants, then I'd rescue either the RRA or the Cinelli. Once Mr Sachs and I are safely out the door I could brain him and snatch the bike he saved, so I get two. :thumb:

(Richard, if you're reading this... Just kidding!)

Yuh. So I'm standing there in a smoke filled room squinting at a bike that constantly changes color and components as I'm trying to decide whether i want it to be a1935 in black or a 1948 in blue or a 1973 in white? All I know is the coroner will say cause of death was asphyxia induced by indecision

mapleleafs-13 03-02-14 08:12 PM

I let them all burn, then i tell my insurance company that all 10 bikes were cinelli Lasers.

after i get paid i then buy more bikes :)

No need to brain him, Rudi - He'd probably be so grateful to you for saving him that he'd gladly fork over the 2nd bike and go on to build you another bike of your dreams for free!

That might slow me down a bit - but I might have an ES300 slung over my back as I rolled out the bike of my choice.

RobbieTunes 03-06-14 06:40 PM

They're insured. I'd let 'em all burn and buy a boat.

Poguemahone 03-06-14 06:43 PM

No Eisentraut. Collection not worth saving. Let 'em burn, take insurance money, buy Eisentraut.

ricklp 03-06-14 06:48 PM

My wife thinks this is as good as The guys on the Big Bang Theory. LOL.

CroMo Mike 03-06-14 06:53 PM

As if I didn't have enough to stay up at night worrying about.

Tonight my bikes will all be parked near the door.

KonAaron Snake 03-06-14 07:01 PM

Auchen - this is hard, we need the years. For instance, if it's a pre-Columbus Cinelli, that's different than later...is it a pre-IC lug De Rosa? A later Sachs?

Also - should I assume that the customs on the list were custom for me?
