Bottom bracket spindle width for Italian frame and Shimano 105 1050 Crankset
Hi Guys,
What is the correct BB size for the 1050-series 105 Shimano crankset and an Italian frame with 130mm rear spacing and a 70mm BB shell? This is now going to be 8-speed bike now. Photo below.

Seweryn, I'm using a 113 mm long spindle (cartridge BB) with my 1050 crankset.

Can't say for sure since I haven't personally used that crank with that BB, but Sutherlands shows both 113 and 115 for "Shimano double crank" and "Shimano UN model sealed BBs, 70mm shell", so I'd bet that the 115 might be the better fit for a 70mm shell and the 130 rear/8speed cluster...it really comes down to how "low profile" that 105 crank is and Sutherlands doesn't tell us that.

Maybe some of you have a comparison between this crank and the Shimano 600? I have the 600-series cranks on the other Italian bike and the setup looks just about perfect with a 113mm BB.

Either 113 or 115 will work just fine.

I have an Italian threaded BB that was being used with a 105 crankset, square taper.
It appears to be a White Industries. Came on a Basso. Yours for shipping, as a welcome to the forum.
I'll PM you my email.

Update...
Hi Guys,
Thank you for your help. I got the BB replaced and found out that 113mm wide spindle is just about OK for this bikewith the above crankset.
I also upgraded the wheels and the bike now rides really, really well. So sad, it is kept abroad so I can only enjoy it for a week or two during the year.
Below I attach a photo from one of my spins around .

The difference between the Italian frame and a similar English frame is simply that the Italian BB shell is 70 mm wide versus 68 mm wide, and that the thread sizes are different and not interchangeable. The Q and chainline should work out the same. The BB shell is only one millimeter wider on each side of the frame and the spindle stub lengths are correspondingly shorter on each side by 1 mm. So the crank arms should be in the same positions relative to the rear wheel (same chainline) for the English and Italian frame threadings.
Also, Shimano did make Italian BBs as well as English-threaded BBs. You should have no problem in finding a compatible cartridge BB.
If the original was cup/ball/spindle, you need to get cups that fit the new frame. In the new frame the bearing spacing will be different by 2 mm, so you need the spindle designed by Shimano to fit this situation. The difference may have been taken up in the cups, too. Sutherland's 5th edition handbook or possibly the 6th has extensive tables to guide you in good spindle selection and how to do any necessary figuring. I'm not aware of any YouTubes that explain this well, but anything is possible.

Thanks Fran, that is helpful info. I found out that for example Shimano UN55 113mm BB fits just as well as the original cup type BB, and the BB shell is the same as in my old Pinarello that I have been working on for so long, but that is a different story... ).
