80's Legnano
Hi,
I recently picked up an old Legnano that needs a bit of attention. I have done lots of searching online but I haven't found a bike the same as this. I think it's a fairly basic low range model because it has Falck tubing, pressed steel drop outs and rear brake mount and it has a front light bracket on the fork.
The bike has a Campag Valentino Groupset, Universal Brake Calipers, Rigida Superchromix rims on Weco? hubs, Galli brake hoods on Galli GG80 levers. 3T bar & stem, etc.
Can anyone tell me what year this bike might be? I have cleaned down the frame and cleaned and serviced the BB and Headset. The paint is fairly faded with lots of scratches but I'm not going to get a respray just yet. Might be a project for next winter. Anyway, I love the white pinstripes and they might be hard to replicate.
I'm going to rebuild it in original configuration with brown Deda leather look bar tape, a brown Charge Spoon saddle and a new polished aluminium seatpost. I have polised up the bar & stem and my next job is to clean and polish the mechs and brake calipers.
I'm also looking for new Galli brake hoods in black or brown. Does anyone know where these can be sourced or a cheap alternative?

Nice bike you've got there. The generator bracket on the fork leads me to believe that this was originally a city or touring bike, not a racer. If it were mine I'd search for a 'condorino' bar, some suitably vintage-looking lights and fenders and make it into a sports bike Italian style. Like this Legnano.

I was originally looking for a frame to build a single speed but when I found this I thought it was worth rebuilding to original config. I agree that it is more of a tourer. I wouldn't be a fan of those bars, I'd prefer to keep it drop bar.
I think the only component I'm missing is the big chainring but seeing as it's going to be a town bike the 42t will be fine so I may just build it as 5 speed initially.
I also need to replace a few spokes on the wheels. Should I remove all the spokes and get a wheelbuilder to rebuild the wheels with new spokes? Or should I just replace the 4 broken spokes?

You're welcome. Even with a drop bar - which is definitely the preferred choice for longer distances, I just find those condorinos way cool - fenders and lights would make it a more versatile bike.
Regarding the spokes: if the rest is OK, I'd just replace the four.

The work is going well. Lots of metal polishing with Autosol and everything is looking great. I don't have the big ring for the legnano chainset so I'm using an old Raleigh chainset for the moment.
I'm going to run the Galli brakes without rubber hoods.
My next job is to refurb the wheels and retention the spokes because they seem very slack.
Then it's time to run the cables. Last few items i need are tyres, tubes, a saddle and pedals.
Still looking for info on these bikes if anyone recognises it.

the Legnano is progressing well. I'm not getting much time to work on it but it's starting to look better.
I have refurbished, polished and tried the front wheel but the back still needs to be done. I'm contemplating replacing all the spikes with stainless steel ones because the old ones seem to be fairly soft. One broke while I was trying.

The front wheel came up well. I got a set of Schwalbe gum wall tyres on eBay.

The Deda brown bar tape looks well too.

I still haven't a clue what model or year the bike is... Anyone got any ideas

Unfortunately the work stalled on my Legnano but I am hoping to get back into the work in the next week or so. I still haven't found much online about this bike. I have seen a few similar bikes but none the same. Do any of you Legnano fans know what model it is or any other info?
I have refurbed the front hub and rim. I tensioned and trued the wheel and polished the Rigida Superchromix rim. It came up great.
I need to do the rear wheel next. The spokes seem very loose and dull in colour. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to respoke the wheel.
Any advice on this job?

Is there a reason you think 80s? Campy Valentino screams early to mid 70s to me.
