Handlebar Mounted Bidons?
 

You know the old time double bidon (bottle) cages mounted on the handlebars?

Does anyone use those, either vintage ones or modern ones?

Do you find any particular (dis)advantage to having the bottles on the handlebar rather than on the seat and downtubes?

Have some of the specialized bottle cage to the handle bar mounts , when I had an AlAn Cross super which had no bottle mounts

way back in the early 60s I had one of the double bottle things ,

that bike was Given away by my father after he got me out of the House and into the War.

I have a single mounted on the h'bar on one bike. Purely for asthetic reasons, i don't particularly like using it. I notice the weight when theres a full bottle in it and it slways feels awkwardreaching up and over the brake cables to get it. I prefer the downtube position for bottles. I will say the h'bar bottle mount is handy for hanging a vintage cycling cap when the bike is parked though..

I got a modern style mount. It's a "GIANT" brand from the LBS, looks similar to the one that VO sells. Definitely notice the weight when its full, not unbearable though. I mainly got it cause when I mount my bottle cages on the frame they tend to get splattered with road crud. It's just an alternative, I wouldn't say a lot better, or a lot worse.

I really suspect that these had more to do with the bottles themselves that were prevalent at the time. They pretty well disappeared with the advent of the basic style of plastic bottles that we use today. When you're using metal bottles that are corked or capped, mounting them on the handlebars gave you a nice easy spot to mess with the cap before picking up the bottles to take a swig. Once squeezable bottles came into being, they migrated to where they are now.

They get in the way of my handlebarcam, my cyclecomputer, and my heartratemonitor.

As with most things in cycling while plootering about waterbottle cage placement matters little, not so at pace in a group. Weight carried on the handlebars negatively effects handling, not good. A bottle mounted on the DT/ST is easy/quick to retrieve/replace on rough roads in a paceline, that's why cage mounts are where they are on "modern" frames.

Very specific as to the size of the bar it will handle, but works well.

They have the advantage over frame clamp mounting, since they are easily
tightened and you don't have to worry about your paint.

I bought a VO handlebar mount, but I thought that the bottle sat so high that it looked ridiculous. I took it off immediately.

Paceline riding sounds like a great way to take the fun out of riding a bicycle.

To each their own, but riding a tight club paceline is the essence of cycling as a competitive sport. It has it's unique demands and concept of what "fun" is, and a big peloton in a race has a dynamic of it's own that must be experienced to appreciate.
It's definitely not for everyone.

Most of cycling technology has evolved to support the competitive cyclist for the history of the sport, and so it goes.

MA, looks good! I have wanted a dualy when I was young. Use to use one back in the day. Keeping road grime off is a +, weight impact -. Looks cool from my point of view. They made more sense to me when they had straws.

Yup, straws, that's what makes it seem like a good idea. I've been wanting one for as long time, but the modern approximations just don't look right to me. I've made do with a hydration pack. In fact I've come to the conclusion a hydration pack is the best way to carry water on the bike. Doesn't look as cool as the handlebar mount, but moves from bike to bike easily and has no impact on handling.

The real thing. An old T.A. cage. They're steel and it's hard to find one with no rust like this one. I don't remember what I paid, but it was a lot.

I always associated them with the Los Angeles Wheelman bicycle club. However, if I was riding L'Eroica I would locate a set up and have a down tube cage too, nutritionist really wants me to drink a lot while riding, and if possible drink 16-20 oz before I go. That was based on how much weight I drop in a two hour summertime ride.

That has to be the best built PR series Peugeot I have ever seen, I like the inline levers too.

I have seen handlebar bidon in many of vintage tour de france videos..
However,then, I seen Ascari.bicycle use the single bidon on handlebar which is So Cool and not too high.. But it seems not mounted on handlebar but on the stem.. Did Anyone know what it is? Im really interested

^ I'd like to see that mount as well. The little extra hand room is nice. Couple of bar set-ups I use. Primarily use for energy drinks on long routes only. I'm mostly a hydration pack user for water.

First pic might be a TA but it has no marks on it indicating. I made the simple clamps, tilted it as far from vertical as possible and its rock solid. The other is a Coloral with snap clip retention and mounts to the stem bolt. Works fairly good in the rougher gravel roads.

I used one of those American front reflector mounts. Gave it a good whack with a hammer to get the correct angle. This set-up survived L'Eroica.

I've used them on the tag a long and kids bikes as the frames were too small to fit a bottle and the skills to reach down were suspect.

It looks like the cage has slipped a bit in the clamp.

The handlebar bottles are also known to get ejected at the most inopportune times.
