From my junk pile

This was the front brake my Father had on the Paramount - used with Raleigh Golden Arrow wheels...

This is the only one I've ever seen, but courtesy of the Internet I know that there are more out there.

Wow!, Another Delta brake variant. Never seen this one before. All these different and old designs seem to keep popping up every year. Looks to be a combination of a Rod, U brake and cantis, put together.
Do you know what brand it is? Any markings on it, other than what looks to be a patent?
You could have a treasure there. Keep it on the bike! Hope it brakes well enough though.....

Needs to spend a day or four receiving one of my spa treatments! In fact, Ed., if you'd like to send it to me for a complimentary treatment, I'd like to document the process. I might even make a reality TV show out of it. Something on the order of "Vintage Bicycle Parts, the Extreme Makeover."

Cool brake. I'd love to find a similar one to mount on my '39 New World.

I'd totally watch that show, Bob. But I'm still not gonna sit through one of your sermons.

Once before I had a project... I don't have ready access to a 'before' photo, but a very nice friend from NEW HAMPSHIRE said, "Let me have it, I'll fixe her up for you."

Suffice it to say that Barbara didn't look like this before Andy worked on her.

So there is precedence...

Ed. I am serious. Shoot me a PM and I'll email you shipping details. Looks to be a super cool project.

Love the sail boat model. I take it is radio controlled? Where in NH does your friend reside?

Tomorrow's joke is about an 80 year old exercising in a gym. Very C&V.

She was designed by Alvin Youngquist, a degreed Naval Architect who was teaching shop in Cleveland, Ohio, IIRC. He designed a series of model boats (along with the Y-Flyer, and another 'full-sized' class I don't recollect). His idea was that students would have to understand the drawings, cut and fabricate all the pieces and, when done, have an item that would be entertaining (this was the 1930's) and learn some skills to boot. This particular design was adopted by the Sea Scouts. I acquired it years ago from a gentleman here in Hopkinton who sold old toys and the like out of a little shop. I'd stopped in to inquire about a specific model train...

Barbara is still as she was designed, a free sailer (sailor??), so no, no radio control, tho Andy did offer to set her up with RC. She is named after a woman I knew first when still a kid - Barb could sail anything, anywhere, anytime. She, her later husband, and her Father where a trio to be reckonded with when sailing Lightenings in Maine. A wonderful person whom I miss very much. Barbara's unknown builder (nothing inside the hull), made a few dimensional boo-boos, so her rig is not quite original (she's a wee bit short).

I'll take you up on your offer and hope to have it in the mail this week. Andy moved a few years ago, and now lives in Dover.

Ed., looking forward to the challenge. Hope you didn't do any pre-cleaning. I really want to see what the spa can do on a tough job.

It has been way too long since I received Ed's ancient brake caliper for a Spa Treatment. Yada yada yada--- the weather has been really nice for riding. Tonight it is raining with thunder and lightening, so into the Spa it went. A few after pictures to contrast with the before shots Ed. took.

I also made a video, but it will need editing and splicing. I'll try to post it ASAP.

So, Bob, having studied the brake pads carefully, no doubt, how do you suppose it worked on the Schwinn?

I have to say you're very good at cleaning things up! With a set of different wheels I could mount the brake and take the Paramount for a spin. (Back when I was young and dumb I used to ride a brakeless, fixed gear Raleigh Pro all over Boston and vicinity. I ain't got the legs for that, now.)

Beautiful. Thank you! Next I think it will be a whole bike, LOL.

Very nice!

Mounting that brake is likely to mess up the paint on the fork legs; is that going to be an issue? And what are the rims? The pads look pretty bad. I can put leather pads in the shoes if you want.

I'm being a little bit facetious about taking it for more than a ride around the cull-de-sac. Yes, you might think mounting the brake might damage the paint, but there's not much of an indication where it was mounted. The fork is plagued with pealing paint, but that's down closer to the drop outs. That brings up the question as to what color was Paramount red?

Rudi,

That would be cool for you to make leather pads for these holders. I tried to slip out the old John Bull pads but one moved only a little and the other didn't budge. I have to admit I didn't try too hard because I was not certain what Ed planned for their future. I'm certain they will come out and I can attest they are long past their expected life.

Ed,

I'll try to get these in the mail Friday or Saturday, and no later than Monday. It's wedding season and I'm running crazy the next few days.

PM Scooper about the paint color. I'm certain he can provide a good answer.

There is a fair amount of rust left on the mounting brackets that you will want to take care of first. I also think I'd replace the mounting screws and nuts as well before use. The mechanism, however, seems to be in great working order.

I haven't had one of those Monitor brakes in my hands, but I assume the setup is not that different from the Philco Centralpull brake I used to have, which mounted the same way, with bands around the fork legs. You clamp them to the fork legs in the place that gives the brake shoes the best contact with the rims; it's pretty primitive but there's only one right place, so you really cant do it wrong. If you switch to a different wheel size, you move the brake up or down as appropriate.

I'm perfectly serious about putting leather pads in the shoes; not hard to do. Whether my leather pads are any good or not, I can only guess.
