correct bar tape for a 85 trek
I found a complete original 85 trek 670 except the bar tape. They have foam grips on it now. I want to keep this bike original, what type of bar tape did these have when they left the bike shop? Thanks

The '85 catalog doesn't say, but in the pic the wrap looks thicker than cotton:

By 85, everyone was sporting padded vinyl tape on their bikes and they also came standard on most bikes at that time.
I used Bike Ribbon, Pelten and Ambrosio on my bikes at that time. Cork was kinda new then, so still rare to see them on bikes.
Everyone pretty much ingnored cello tape by 85, and to some extent, the same with cloth, except maybe for tourers that loved cloth tape.

I don't think they ever came unpadded as every one I encountered had that softish feel to it. If one ever encountered unpadded vinyl tape on a bike back then, it would be really cheap stuff as might have been used on the cheapest bikes....

It is thicker than the Benotto cellophane like tape, but when riding the 560, it sure doesn't feel padded. If I was at home, I'd check for you, but not the case.

White Cinelli cork tape would be appropriate. Not the stuff with the gel, just the plain jane cork tape.
