Fork Crown Race Setter Tool My Version

I know this has been done before.......

Fork Crown Race Setter Tool $5.73 + Tax

1" Copper Coupling $1.88
1" X 12" Black Nipple $3.85

It worked perfect. I taped them together just so I would not loose both pieces.

We used something very similar at the first shop I worked at. If you turn an old crown race upside down it gives a larger surface to 'tap' on then you don't even really need the copper tube.

And I still use your method (and tools) today. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :thumb:

I just use the 1 x 12 steel pipe. Wouldn't the copper be too soft for whacking a steel crown race into position?

PVC pipe. Does not damage the race. You have to replace it eventually, but if you do you are installing a lot of crown races.

A old upside down junk fork and a couple upside races and and a small mallet work's.

Plus the cost of the pizza of course. ;)

Nice, cheap fix, FB.
As you know, I went way overkill on my tool.
But it was fun to make.

Good approach! I used a steel pipe. It really doesn't take much force to place one. Tap gently! Before installation, measure both ID and OD. Should not be more than .002 interference. Paint will impact the OD on the crown so clean it off. The installer of the Super Record Crown race wherever the it happened failed to clean the paint off resulting in a broken race. The SR race is not as robust as the NR race and are subject to failure upon installation.

I don't recommend pounding on too hard in that position; it's a bit hard on the leather sofa :)

How about a cheap crown race removal tool?

Not much of a saving if ya have to buy one but I used a Bearing Separator. We had one like this at our shop. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wm...FQ5gMgodCTgAzg
Harbor Freight may have one for less.

I use a hammer and a punch and a bench vise. Yeah, pretty crude.

But it works and that's all you need.

My crown race setter tool is a 1" hole drilled into my wood workbench. I put the race on the fork, and I put the steerer into the hole. Bang on the underside of the fork crown with a mallet. Done.

Crude, maybe, but I've yet to damage a race or a crown using this race removal method. Whereas the one time I tried to use an actual purpose-built tool I ended up gouging the paint on the crown!

Overkill. I know.
But I like the way it works. And was fun to make. ;)

But I drew the line at making one of these.
