Wrap MTB Bars?

I seen a few pics of mountain bikes with the bars having road bike bar tape instead of grips. One even had road bike brake levers and wrap. Is there a benefit to the tape over the grips? I think my Yeti grips are pretty comfy and thought about a partial wrap to the grips maybe in yello. Ideas?

I suppose it depends on the bike, the bars and what you're doing on them.

I wrap my MTB's bars and the bar ends with cork tape. This was initially a weight weenie measure but I find it comfortable as well, and I can add extra strips of cork where desired for extra padding.

When I commuted by MTB, I wrapped the bar ends in bar tape like jyl . Definitely preferable to bare metal, but I don't see any particular advantage over a good set of regular MTB grips.

I wrapped my bar ends because I have trouble with tingling hands.

I put foam rubber grips over my bar extensions for the same reason. Now that the grips on the main bars have deteriorated, I am seriously considering replacing them with tape. I just put Fizik tape on the Capo (drop bars), and so far I am delighted with it.

When I had bar ends, I wrapped them in neoprene tape, which seemed comfy enough...though I found I seldom used the bar ends, and got rid of them.

I've no idea where I got the tape. It didn't have glue, but it relied on its own strength and stretchiness to keep it in place...you could pull it very tight.
