Specialized "Sealed bearings"; a question...

I suddenly find myself with a slew of 1983 - 1984 Specialized bikes (Expedition, Sequoia, and Stumpjumper "Sport") with "sealed bearing" hubs and bottom brackets. I haven't had a chance to open any of these up for inspection, but wondered if anyone knows offhand whether these are actual sealed bearing races or simply traditional bearings with a sort of rubber "dust seal" cap to help keep them clean? Thanks in advance!

Bikes: Mostly '80s MIJ steel.

The bottom brackets are not the cartridge bearing type but the hubs are, from about '84 on at least. IIRC.
