1978 Trek TX700 Score!

I have always lusted after an early Trek and just picked this up off the local craigslist! I got it for a great price and it is just my size so I am excited about building it up. From the serial number (G2B8O98) it was built in 1978. It has the optional top tube guides, bottom bracket guides, water bottle braze ons and fender eyelets. The dropouts on both front and rear are Campagnolo. The headbadge has been replaced with the later glue on version but it does have the mounting holes for the original drilled into the headtube. I might try and track down a screw on type or just retrofit the newer one so it will match the year. It was built up with some nice touring gear including suntour barends, triple crank and jim blackburn rack and water bottle cage so it will make a nice commuter without adding many accessories. I plan on building as my upright city bike but am not 100% sure yet. I will update the thread as I get into it. Any info would be appreciated but I found most of what I was looking for on vintage-trek.com

Cheers!

Nice piece of history. These were the bikes that Trek made their name on.

Great find I hope you really enjoy it. I can't believe it still has these on it.

Bikes: 1978 Trek TX700; 1978/79 Trek 736; 1984 Specialized Stumpjumper Sport; 1984 Schwinn Voyageur SP; 1985 Trek 620; 1985 Trek 720; 1986 Trek 400 Elance; 1987 Schwinn High Sierra; 1990 Miyata 1000LT

AWESOME BIKE!!!

The TX bikes are really special.

It's kind of interesting about the geometries of the early Treks- I have a 78 730- it was ostensibly a racing bike- the geometry is more laid back than my sport touring bike, but it has a shorter wheelbase than anything else I own.

Thanks everyone! I am definitely excited about getting this one built up and riding it before it gets too cold. I might just re-grease and ride as is for now (minus the FG saddle of course) and then decide how I want to build it up.

Congrats on the bike. I found a '78 TX700 frame set a couple of years ago. The paint was in rough shape so I had it powder coated and built it up with a modern ten speed drivetrain. Awesome bike and I'm sure you will enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Bikes: Trek TX900.

A very nice bike. Congrats. I have a screw on headbadge, a little rough but restorable. I bought it as someone stole one of mine.

Hi, I am sorry I am unable to respond to your questions as I have too few posts to use the PM function.
I am very new here and clumsy.

Bikes: they change so much I'm tired of updating this

I seen that, if I hadn't been in gatlinburg it would've been a race.

Ha! Eventhough I don't mind a good race now and then I am glad you were on vacation. I will be taking a break from CL for a while though so happy hunting
