Needing tire size help

I am new to the Forum and just purchased a Peugot Urban Express, serial number ARYC465457. The tires on the bike are shot and the sidewalls are in such bad shape that there is nothing that can be read as far as size. The rims are 26 X 150. Does anyone know what size tire I need for this bike. Thanks for any help.

Dean

Hi Dean,

According to the catalogs, the 80s Peugeot Urban Express OEM tire was IRC "Duramax" skin size, 26 x 1.50" (37-559).

The rims and tires have a 559mm diameter bead seat diameter.

Harris Cyclery has several tires that should work for you.

26x1.75 would give you a little softer ride and if a 26x1.95 will fit, even better.

Your link brought up a [h=1]Panaracer Pasela City Tire - Black/Tan[/h] Item # YT-PPSK

These tire sizes through me for a loop. The price sounds good. Is that that tire I need ?

No. That tire is a 700c (622mm BSD) not 26". The "select" pulldown menu only shows 700c.

The correct tire size is 26" x 1.50" (inch decimal) or 559 x 37 (metric millimeters).

I found a great buy on a pair of 26 X 175. I already have a couple of 16 X 1 3/8 tubes. Will it hurt anything to use them ?

Is the 16 a typo? A 16" tube is much smaller in diameter than a 26" tube so, no, don't use them. Even if you intended to say you have a pair of 26 x 1 3/8 tubes, it wouldn't work. 26 x 1 3/8 has a BSD of 590mm and your 26 x 175 tires and your wheel rims have a BSD of 559mm, so the tubes would be too big.

Read THIS ARTICLE.

EDIT - Sheldon Brown also has another good article on tire sizing HERE.

Thanks Scooper !! That was a typo for sure. Wow !! I thought the 26 X 1 3/8 tubes would be a little to small. I have a lot to learn.

The different tire sizing systems make it very confusing, and Sheldon Brown's articles are a big help in sorting things out.

The important numbers are the bead seat diameter (BSD) and width. A 26" tire could have a BSD of 559mm, 571mm, 584mm, 590mm, or 597mm depending on the sizing system. A great example would be 26" x 1.5" (BSD=559mm), but 26" x 1 1/2" which you'd assume would be the same thing, has a BSD of 584mm.
