I am interested and despite the cold/snow right now would love to see the mileage be a part of it. If the miles are part of the rules the end point needs to be sometime when it the weather up north is a bit nicer.

Heh. I went back and checked, I guess I was the official winner on Narhay's $100 clunker challenge.

I'd be up for the Velo-Cheapo too, especially if existing frames are allowed. My recently retired, rusty, derelict, beige, Hi-Ten Apollo would look pretty sweet in Legnano green and white livery. And it's not like I'm ever going to find a real Legnano like that in my size.

So is the goal to get the cheapest bike? Vintage I presume. I'm looking on CL now & a lot of the old ones look really nice. So do we get credit for wildly different "before" & "after"? I think cost should be a factor, how well you fix it up/ clean up (before/after) appearance, age should possibly play a part. Obviously some who are snowed in might not get to ride it far, but riding it could be a seperate category. Like all criteria would be the same, except if you put miles on it that could be category 1 and if no miles category 2, but all other judging criteria would be the same.

Cheapest period, or best deal for the dollar (best quality bike for the cheapest price- value)?

We definitely need rules here. David325, I volunteer to help form the rules, and I can be a judge, too, if that helps. Email me if you're interested, using the address below, not using a private message.

David325 and I are working out rules in email. I invited Pastor Bob to join us, too. We'll announce the rules ASAP.

Sounds good. Please start a new thread so the rules aren't buried in this one.

I've been scouring CL for potential candidates, but since I don't know the rules I'm restraining myself.

For those suffering with snow/ or impending snow should the build ride time be longer than other threads? I know a thread like this can stay current?
I have a $10 Carlton and a $30 Falcon Olympic that could be good for this.
Did not see Narhays thread until towards the end

Carlton as picked up then with another wheel set

Falcon as picked up

As soon as we figure it out I'll get cracking( do not see that happening till the New year though)

I don't think I could ever compete in one of these events. Here in Oregon it's almost impossible to get a generic and trashed box-store MTB for the price some of you pick up the classic bikes. Anything with any vintage to it will generally require a Ben Franklin at its cheapest in a rusted out state.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm in the Portland market and agree with you completely. I bought a bike yesterday, but not sure it will be right for this challenge, so Im not introducing it yet. Had to drive to Canby though.

any updates on the rules? Thoughts on incorporating actually riding the bicycle as part of the rules?

I think it would be important to say the frame needs rust or else we end up with a bunch of beautiful road bikes, rustier the better in my mind. Narhays challenge was great but there were a few too many gleamers.

Looking forward to this as it is what I try to do with my bikes, I do them up from a rusty state and in some cases I give them away to people in need (could be a possible route for some?) some of the neighborhood kids around here are pretty happy!!

Found one!!

1991 Steve Bauer Caurus Mountain Bike.
I was looking for a road bike frame but I found this in the trash next door.

Picture from the internet. My wife wouldn't let me bring the dirty bike inside for pics.

Similar problem here in Philadelphia. About once or twice a year I stumble on a good deal, but there's a lot of luck involved. The fact that this is taking place in winter helps a bit.

I like the idea of a cap on investment for Velo-Cheapo entries. I also think there are more than a few members who have massively deep inventories of quality and valuable frames and parts acquired for next to nothing. I personally have negative equity on quite a few component groups.

One of the difficulties is keeping the value of the transferred parts honest. In that spirit, I would suggest that the winner should be required to list their bike for sale at the cap price either here on the C&V for sale thread or ebay, with reasonable shipping/handling say $95. This would help deter the Campagnolo Chorus and Dura Ace entries on a "Cheapo" build.

I like that idea. Both the cap as well as the offering for sale. Not at the cap price, but at the claimed build price, if that is part of the judging criteria.

I wish I could join in on this, but my wife and I are having a baby in the next week or so and i have to cut back on my bike addiction for a while. I just finished up my last couple of cheapo builds, a C-Dale R600 and a Super V800 Raven. Check my pedal room page below if you're interested.
