Frame Painting

I have been reading and enjoying the thread about Rattle Can Painting! This has me coming up with some question. I have a spray set up and booth since I am a woodworker. I am wanting to try my hand at base and clear automotive paint but have a question or two. I understand that there is a window of 24 hours after spraying the base that you must spray the clear or the surface needs to be sanded. Since I want to use a second color on the lugs or head tube I will most likely miss that window. I know I could ask the supply house but thought i would ask you guys what grit paper would you use? Also what tape for masking to do the lugs?
These type of posts are great for these winter days!!

I scuff with a Scotch Brite maroon number 7447 pad. It's less likely than sandpaper to cut through too deeply at places like lug edges.

You won't need a whole box. I repainted two bikes using a single pad.

Bikes: they change so much I'm tired of updating this

When you buy the paint, talk to the sales person. Paints differ on set ups and applications.

Paints usually have specs such as "dry to tape" or something of the sort.
You should be able to do the second (or third+) colors in time to clearcoat the whole shebang before sanding
becomes necessary.
