"A bicycle is a rolling work of art, which just might save the world." GP

Ride it, you are doing it a disservice and preventing us from possibly enjoying redemption.

The odd thing is, outside litespeed aficionado circles I can't imagine this would cause too much fawning, the Smithsonian certainly won't be rushing to get a court injunction to stop you riding around the block and if you turned up at the local club run the majority of riders would prob think you were taking out your aluminum Winter bike and certainly wouldn't turn anymore heads than Fred on his new Cannondale - That's not to insult your bike or your personal affection for it (tho it will certainly read like that), just the reality is that $2.5k buys a new bike that looks nice just as much as it buys a not quite NOS one that looks nice too, so whats the difference in riding either unless there is a paragraph missing from the provenance store that somehow makes this worthy of preserving over all the new mid to high range bikes currently on sale.

If you are not going to ride it, then the suggestions to sell it are probably the best advice as you may come to regret that decision in later life as it will remind you of the unnecessary anxieties you had when you were younger that prevented you from embracing life and having more fun and every time you pass it or see it hanging there i will rub a little more salt in that wound.

If you really want something to hang and look at then sell it anyway and buy something a bit more universally head turning and heart stopping like this Legnano Gran Premio NOS Campagnolo 1975 Classic Steel | eBay
The cranks and the stem. Seem my earlier post. Rare ti pieces that are highly sought after. As I said, take those parts off and ride the crap out of everything else. That is half the value of the bike. The cranks along could get $800 without a blink, maybe $100. The stem anywhere from $150-$300.

Funny, my wife has a vintage Eddy that hung on the original owners wall for 20 years, never ridden, until we bought it 10 years ago. We also went through the ride/don't ride dilemma. The original owner died without ever having ridden the bike, so sad. It gets ridden, but only on sunny days when the mood hits. It helps to have other nice bikes to ride besides the Merckx, too.

It's your bike - hang it up if you just can't ride it. It's only one bike and the rest of the bike riding world won't miss it if it remains indoors with you for however long you own it. There are plenty of other bikes around for us devoted C&V'ers to go nuts over.

Time heals everything so I've heard. Who knows, after a little time has passed you may be able to overcome this feeling and ride it yourself.

Eventually, one day it will hit the road, probably under some other owner if the distant future.

Actually, there is a finite number of bikes waiting to be ridden and each and every one of them should be used. Hording bikes should be a felony. YMMV.

Where do you live? Leave the bike on your front porch and I'll come over and scratch it up a bit for you.

You're welcome.

Haha - yes you're right……and a finite number of bike riders too.

Felony? haha. If you own more than one bike is that hording? Looks like I'm off to Jail.

I get what you mean though - good point.

I know this isn't on the same level, but I'm young and relatively poor, so my grail is/was a dark/forest green Bianchi volpe. And I got it, in effectively pristine condition, this summer. I love that pup, and when I got it, I was afraid to ride it for dinging/chipping it. As my pa told me, though, "Even puppies die sometimes." And his other piece of advice: "It's a thing. Things get broken and lost and they're still just things." Which isn't to say that 2.5k is nothing, but..if the fun part of bikes is riding, you should ride it! If you enjoy it now, imagine how much more you'd enjoy it while *on* it! And, in the end, it is just a material object and that materiality probably won't make you feel better than flying down the country roads (or wherever your preferred venue is) will.

Also, my bikes get more marked up from moving them around in storage than they ever do on the road. Certainly, remove the cranks and stem and protect them, then enjoy the rest of your awesome bike by riding it! Just sayin'........................

That is a gorgeous bike! It fits, though...
As for it only being NOS or mint once, that's true of every single bike ever made. Ride it and enjoy it. And when you get home you can still look at it and enjoy it some more, even with a scratch or two (they add character).

Thank you to everyone that took the time to reply.

Looks like the consensus is to ride it and I will be happy to oblige!

I will ride it, enjoy it, show it off, and not agonize over any scuffs or scratches that may result.

My wife read the thread and would like me to be extra thankful to those that recognized her for the wise and supporting individual that she is.

Bill,

I caught up with this thread last night and thought I'd respond after I received some feedback from an outside, yet reliable source, i.e my nephew.

As it turns out he works for the man who autographed the left chain stay, David Lynskey, of Lynskey Performance Cycles in Chattanooga, TN. My nephew builds every frameset which is sent out to customers in order that the bike is ready to ride. He's basically their "wrench" while all the other employees are in the production side of framesets.

As you may or may not know Lynskey founded Litespeed. Since selling it off and ceasing all Litespeed construction, they continued to build Ti framesets for other companies and a few years ago launched their new brand name after the family. Thus Lynskey was Litespeed where your frameset was made, thus the signature on the chain stay.

My nephew's reaction was:

So, another data point, but one from an "insider" so to speak. It is a beautiful bike. I do believe in riding what we own, and nothing is ever perfect. Best of luck on your decision.

Hi Pastor Bob,

Thank you for the "insider" perspective. Just when I was at peace with my decision, you've introduced doubt into my mind. Thankfully I haven't ridden the bike again so I still have my options open.

I didn't read all the responses. But, all I can definitely say to your dilemma, in a marked in stone reply is, I DONT KNOW. Ride don't ride, Shoot it, don't shoot it, display or leave in the box. I am leaning though VERY VERY hard that life is short, use and enjoy your stuff. Just my opinion, but in 15 or 20 years, no matter what your age, your dreams will have changed, your kids will be selling the stuff for 10 cents on the dollar, or your ex will. If not by the time it becomes a windfall if ever as the next generation doesn't appreciate our stuff it may be worthless. After reading my own reply, ride ride ride it.

Pastor Bob,

One more thing. If it's not too much of an imposition, can you ask your nephew if he can determine what model the bike is from the pictures? The seller thinks it might be a Tuscany but someone here mentioned it could be a Siena. Doesn't much matter either way to me but I would just like to know.

Thank you,

Bill

Just curious, I saw your post on RBR where you went looking thinking it was a 56. Is this bike a lot too small for you?

I just texted my nephew and he said;

Send me the serial number and any other marking (ie letters) stamped in the BB
So if you can post that information, he can check for you. He probably will need to do so tomorrow, so it could take a day or so.

The bottom bracket has the numbers "37877" on one side and what appears to be a "J" and an "O" on the other.

Passed that information along to my nephew. Hopefully he can tell us more later today after he heads into Lynskey. He said he will talk to the welders and find out the approximate date, model, and who welded it.

I really didn't mean to, but I thought it was worth involving my nephew who we might consider an "expert witness" in this particular case.

One thing I've learned from him about Lynskeys is that they build more Ti frames for other bike brands then they do for their own brand. The Lynskeys frames are only available through their website, no LBSs carry this brand.
