I've never found anything of note on the road while bicycling. Unless you count rattlesnakes. One weekend on the Skyline Drive, it was like a rattlesnake rally or something. Luckily most were already road kill.

I call it road treasure. I have found a screwdriver (keep it in my panniers), a heavy duty bike lock...where the combo was still 0000, a digital glucose meter (in my neighborhood - returned to owner), and most recently a Samsung S5, I found the owner and she told me it was stolen from her at *** point alomg with her boyfriends phone and wallet.
Of course, the lesser things I see like the odd shoe, or panties I don't stop for, but I .always looking |

This thread is endlessly facinating.
I used to think it was totally lame when my dad would stop by big piles of junk people threw out to the curb. Now, I think I get it. It's not so much about cheating the system to get free stuff.... it's more like a treasure hunt to me now. I've gotten so many cool things for free from Craigslist (including a Steinway, almost perfect shape). I can't wait to see what I find on my bike..... I've only been going weekends for 8 weeks or so, and have already "found" lots of cool places I've never seen (or just never appreciated) driving past in the car. A clever shortcut through someplace esoteric or just pretty is an exciting find in my book. |
Nothing of note, but last year I found a bible. Had a name in it but no address. I hung it on the next stop sign and it was gone the next day.

Over the years I've found a 1/2" ratchet wrench, a Gerber multitool, a bunch of change.
So far this year I have found two iPhones. The first one I picked up out in the country laying in the middle of the road. I picked it up and the screen was crushed and the phone was dead. I looped back thru that area an hour later to find for teen age boys slowly walking down road. They were looking for two phones and were surprised when I handed them one. The second iPhone had a cracked screen but still worked. I used Siri to call "Home" and less than an hour later the owner came to my house and picked up his phone. Both owners said that they had forgot they placed their phone on the trunk of a car. |
Found a brand new women's Patagonia jacket earlier this summer, ended up giving it to my mom.
I found a cell phone recently. Found a fishing rod, Mr heater portable heater, wallet, gloves, hats, fishing rod holder, a miter box, CDs, sunglasses, and probably more stuff that I can't think of. |
I was on a four month tour and found a porn disc on the road. Happiest day of my life.

A few weeks ago I almost hit this with my tires. I tossed it into some trash lest someone else hit it.
http://world.std.com/~muller/pics/knife.jpg Yesterday I found this. I called the local police department, they promised to send someone to that intersection to pick it up. http://world.std.com/~muller/pics/Co...15/Syringe.jpg |
Most recently (during my long walk after my unprepared-for flat) I found a woman's clutch purse. It only took a day using FB to contact her and I was able to pass it along to her boyfriend (who lives closer to me) the day after that. That was pretty cool - she had a LOT of ID (including passport) in that thing she was overjoyed to get back. I was offered a substantial reward, which I declined. I mean, who wouldn't pick it up and try to return it, right?

A Rolex watch. Well ... it was a fake, but a good fake. lol

I haven't ever found anything nice, but just like yesterday, I often come across screws or other metal pokey thingies I stop and pick up.

DD I took a bus ride to work one day and clumsily left my iphone on the seat. within 20 minutes of calling the bus service and talking to the driver it had already vanished. I also left work without my messenger bag once. Came back that evening to find my nice waterproof riding jacket and water bottle removed from the bag. thankfully they left me my keys. |

Trust me, that's getting less and less common these days. Yesterday I was telling my wife I really need to dig that trench and put in a new power line to the shop out back. Then I went for a ride and saw a man emptying the back of his truck into a trash pile at the side of the road. He left the scene and I pulled up to see what he had tossed, a perfectly good "sharpshooter" a trench digging shovel.

I turned a corner so fast leaving the river bed into Seal Beach and ran into a rattle snake. I still think of it till this day. I Jumped over the snake and so glad I did't get bitten. The snake was curled up and ready to strike. I told that story many times and each time I tell that story, the snake keeps getting bigger!!!

Yesterday I was out riding on the local mup and got to thinking about life. Keep thinking and thinking and couldn't stop thinking. Suddenly I realized I had found total concentration, so I got that going for me!

I just spent 20 minutes searching my photobucket for the pictures, but I must have deleted them. I was about a mile from my house back in Autumn of 2009, commuting to work on my bike. I am riding along, and this odd grey object comes into view. About 5-6 foot wide, 1-2 foot high, and about 3 feet deep. I get closer, and my memory banks kick in. It's a mid fender well replacement front clip, for a 64-67 Corvette!?! Still in gelcoat, and never installed. I called my wife since I was already running a little late, and it was pretty light just bulky. I sold it a few months later for $200.
I remembered vaguely when I first moved into the neighborhood, that the guy had a couple of Corvettes in the garage in back. I guess he died or something, and the kids were clearing out Dad's old shed of useless junk. Nothing else appeared later though.,,,,BD Found a wallet once, contacted them via facebook. Some 20 something cajun woman.(French last name) Never got a single word if they even got it, and they wouldn't respond when I asked. It probably was taken from them, and emptied the night before. They probably thought I took the cash and anything else valuable out of it, before shipping it. |

I was pulling out of my late Parent's driveway when I noticed a colourful rectangle beside the road. Stopped and picked it up. Apparent right away that it was a woman's wallet.
Sure enough, looked inside to see goodly amount of cash and multiple ID cards. Put it into my messenger bag and went on to my next stop. Later her at the bike shop I had one of the techno kids find "Lindsay" on Facebook. Sent a message and her husband called shortly after, real relived. She was from Panama and married to one of the Marines here . Came right over and got it. Apparently it is uber impossible to get replacements for her many IDs. Handshake was all I expected. She probably put it on the top of the car then took off down the road. Felt good, deed and all. |
I found a cell phone in the middle of a mountain highway near Palm Springs. It was in one of those otterbox cases so it wasn't damaged. After charging it, i was able to get it back to its owner who drove up to LA from Temecula to get it.

One time I found a pair of rolled up tube socks, when I pulled the socks apart some sexy black lingerie fell out onto the ground. I think someone was trying to hide the evidence!
