Narhay's 1987 Mongoose Pro

I rescued this from a student's balcony where it had been languishing for 2 years last night. He, or the previous owner, was a serial stickerer...an offence which should be punishable by some sort of gulag.

The frame paint is not great...lots of scrapes and stickers but it is all there and straight. The components are the real gem.

Frame: 1987 Mongoose Pro

Fork: Mongoose Pro threaded (looks like 1”)

Headset: Tange Falcon (with mishmash of spacers and stronglight top cap)
Stem: Tioga (looks like 1”)

Brakes: BR-M730 front, BR-M731 chainstay U-brake rear
Brake Levers: Dia-Compe 290 Batwing levers

Shifters: SL-M730 3x6 speed SIS/Friction
Front Derailleur: FD-M730
Rear Derailleur: RD-M730
Freewheel: 6 Speed Shimano of unknown type

Cranks:FC-M730 175mm
Crank Bolts: FC-M730
Chainrings: Biopace bronze anodized
Chainring bolts: FC-M730
Bottom Bracket: ?
Pedals: Suntour XC Compe BMX

Hub Skewers:
Rims: Araya RM-20
Hubs: XT 6 speed freewheel rear hub, XT front (no model number...anyone know?)

Saddle: Turbo
Seatpost: Kalloy
Seatpost Binder: XT

The saddle looks rather worn in places but intact without any rips. What could I use to re-condition and re-colour it? Seems like a decent enough saddle that it would merit it...but I don't want to have to wear only black pants while riding it for fear of staining.

Can't wait to see your meticulous cleaning work in action in this one. I have never seen those levers before, pretty cool. The chrome tioga stem is pretty cool too. I bet it is worth close to whatever you paid for the bike.

1987 was a very big year for top-end bikes like this one.

The M730 indexed gruppo was an engineering marvel.

Your frame must be made of very good tubing.

My 1987 Jamis Dakar (a little rusty) has the same under-chainstay brake and XT bits, though I got round 28-38-48t rings and Shimano's M730 brake levers.
My Uniglide cogs are 6-speed, 12-28t, on an M730 cassette hub just like yours. Top end speed is very good with the 48-12t high gear.

I've had to tune the bike up, with new HG70 chain, and I had to install an Origin-8 front brake cable housing stop on the fork crown in order to eliminate the violent braking chatter.

It's all quality stuff. What tubing is your frame made of?

I'm not quite sure what tubing it has. There is no sticker on the bike for anything. If anyone else knows I'd like to hear it. The 6 speed group is pretty cool, though. Thanks for telling me about your Jamis.

I spent a number of hours this weekend cleaning parts from this and a 1995-1996 Specialized Rockhopper which had a few interesting upgrades (SL-M732 XT thumb shifters, RD-739 XT rear derailleur, a bunch of LX running gear and some neat Suntour XC-II pedals). I posted in the mechanics forum on how to remove the 6 speed cassette. If it's two chain whips I'll have to order another. And yeah, I could have sworn the chainstay brake had black brake pads. Everything on this bike was just covered in the thickest, gooiest grime and black soot imaginable. I've started to work on the frame and wheels but time has run out.
