Is the Pizza Port 70 Dead?

(In case you didn't see the thread in SoCal): The Marine Corps is closing Camp Pendleton. Is this the end of the Pizza Port 70, or would you entertain riding on the freeway? I'm not sure how I feel about that yet.

I guess I'll have to bring my reserve ID with me and then flip off all those ******** on that facebook page who were ranting about how "unsafe" cyclists make Pendleton.

Good grief.

Bar the windows Marge, there's a pack of cyclists coming!

im sure it will stay open. maybe limited access to inner parts of the base.

I've rode on the 5 one day, both ways because of high security on base. It will be one of the faster TT sections of road you will ever do while bunny hopping shredded tires and glass every 20-50 feet

Funny thing about the link you posted @PhotoJoe. When I search for Camp Pendleton on the Facebook app on my cell phone, that page is not found. But my browser shows the page you posted. Made me think it may not be real??

I can't believe they'll outright close it. You might want to call the PIO and verify if it is open a few days before if you plan to ride through. As mentioned above, riding the shoulder on I-5 is not easy with all the debris that collects there; I've done I-5 through Camp Pendelton and I-15 out to Las Vegas, and both are 'debris fields' of trash.

I and likely many others asked via email and this is what we were sent today:

Good Afternoon,

In response to your question concerning recreational bicyclist access to
Camp Pendleton, there are no changes to current policy until 01 Feb 2016.

A decision on policy regarding access for recreational bicyclists after 01
Feb 2016 has not been made.

Respectfully,

The only question is why did it take so long? Most bases have been on lockdown for 14 years.

Probably with regard to cyclists at least, that there really ISNT a safe route in that area. The state would prefer cyclists aren't riding on the shoulder of a freeway

The state doesn't own the base. If it weren't so bloody expensive to get the state to add bike path, I'd say continue the bike path along side the freeway until oceanside. Better for all concerned.

They knew about all the rumors as many cyclists had already asked them. Their response to me was that they know nothing officially but they expect some type of accomodation or compromise will be reached.

I know that. What I was saying was something I saw elsewhere about there being a "need" for cyclist access as there was no other safe route that is viable for time being. And that there was some sort to unwritten agreement at play and someone in what I saw had referenced state.

Is the Pizza Port 70 Dead?

My friend who has a charity ride (The Boob Ride) shared this update

Camp Pendleton cyclist access update:
Camp Pendleton wanted to give you an update on our visitor access policy. We value the great relationship we have with the area cycling community and wanted to develop a process allowing bicyclist's continued access to Camp Pendleton. By Mar. 1, bicyclist will be required to register in order to have access to the base. An online process will be complete mid-February and base access will be good for one year. Bicyclists will need to re-register every year. Until the registration process is finalized, bicyclists will still be able to enter the base with their U.S. or State government issued identification card just like now. After Mar. 1, all bicyclists will need to be registered and show their U.S. or State identification when entering the base. Once the registration process is up and running in a few weeks, we will share the link. Our goal is to maintain a great relationship with area riders but also balance that with security and protection for our Marines, Sailors, civilian employees and families. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

some update

Also, two riders on our Swami’s Wednesday ride were turned away at the front gate this morning because of a “new policy” of no more than 3 visits on base in 45 days. I contacted the Provost Marshal's Office in charge and was emailed the following incase this happens to you: (if they scan your ID card 3+ times)

“My apologies for the confusion with some of the gate sentries. We often have a turn-over of personnel. The rule of "accessed the base more than three times in 45 days" should not be currently applied to bicyclists. Please ask to speak to a supervisor if this happens again. A final decision on the procedure for recreational bicyclists after 01 Feb 2016 has not been made. Respectfully, Joe A. Grabman Assistant Services Officer Support Services Division Provost Marshal's Office”

I would love to, but I think it's a bad weekend for me. I spent yesterday hanging new interior doors but didn't get the job done. I need to wrap that up Saturday, then Superbowl is on Sunday. If you go, please have a piece of pizza or two for me...and say hi to the ladies on the train!

I'm going Sunday but the destination is my son's soccer game, not the pizza port.

Can't... I have this pesky thing called work I have to deal with.

You're welcome to join me on Sunday though.

I did also however the 7 days to process seems too good to be true.

I'm riding Corona to Oceanside tomorrow. Hopefully no issues riding through the base.
