I am 5-11 and weigh 238...down from 248 3 weeks ago. It's all due to the riding. I ride a 1998 Specialized Allez Comp (58c).

FORIAMBILL 07-06-09 06:17 PM

6'5" and just south of 300. currently ride a giant sedona. I've been trying to decide on something new. (actually have a thread in cyclo forum) always have been fearful of bending a wheel. mixed riding with mostly paved trails. some grass/gravel. been this weight for ~10 years. proper eating and exercise or being sloth and pigging out, weight doesn't change. pants just fit differently. to me, the bike is for fun. I do 15 mile rides a couple times a week, 20-30 miles every now and then.

First post as a Clydesdale...got the doctor wake up call at 45 (2005), decided to take on century rides as my methods of madness. Now four years later and I am up to 4 in a year (I seem to add one with every new year as a new level of motivation). Just set a personal best time of riding the Tahoe century in under 7 hours. Weight loss has ebbed and flowed as my seriousness and training improves. I am down 12 lbs since starting this mission 245 - 233. I hit 224 for my first century (fear driven training). I see 225 in my future for the 9.12 Century I am currently training for. I think 210 is my ultimate goal for next year. Best thing about biking - is the community of people, not to mention how good it feels to work up a sweet and check a box of accomplishment.

downtube42 07-07-09 08:18 PM

My Wii fit weighed me at 199.8 today - woo hoo. Except... my official weight has been on the scale at work, which still shows me at 202. No celebration quite yet.

I have to say the daily graphing done by the wii is great positive reinforcement - and negative when I misbehave.

First post on the forum. 38yo clydesdale. Need to get back down under 200. First week in college tore ACL and meniscus and never got back under 200. Currently, 254 and ready to start losing again. I ride a Trek Pilot 2.0 and love it. 180 is my goal. It wasn't put on in a day so just focussing on one day at a time.

moai 07-08-09 10:01 PM

I am 45, 6'5" and I weigh 340 (or so). I ride a GT Palomar as often as I can and take regular wilks with the wife.

Gotta start small. I didn't pack all this on in one day, so it is going to take a while to get it off!

New to the forum, getting ready to start riding again after about 10 years.

Great to have you here.

Hey bigger guys and gals!!! I found this subforum the other day and have taken my time reading through. I have more to read and digest still.

I'm 46, been married to a wonderful woman for 26 years. I'm retired Navy (can't really wrap my fat head around having been out of the uniform for 8 years!!). And 2 great kids, 21 YO son and 19 YO daughter.

Back to me. I'm 6'3", hover between 290 and 300 pounds (because I only weigh myself every three or four weeks). I haven't been on my bikes SERIOUSLY for about 13 years. Sure, I have my MTB bike out once in a while, but it only reminds how out of shape I am these days.

But even when I was riding regularly, I was 210/215. Still Clydesdale. I went through lots of parts on my bikes. I learned not to buy cheap components when I did break things. Built a couple wheels for my road bike and my MTB using old high flange hubs and straight 16 gauge spokes with a 4 cross pattern. And, magically, quit breaking spokes. Here is a pic of me back about 1990 or so on my KHS Fiero (ignore the chrome handlebars, I'd broken the aluminum bar a few days before this was taken...).
http://www.geocities.com/phatfo2/CENTURYROG.JPG

Fast forward, I took a bike I built up from trash pile bikes to take on ship for deployments (wouldn't lose much if stolen or lost). I've ridden in the Middle East, Australia and Tasmania, Singapore, Hong Kong, Acapulco and Korea (Hong Kong and Korea are SCARY!!!).

Since 2001, I've been on my bikes MAYBE 400 miles. I work too far away to reasonably commute (50 miles and a narrow mountain pass). My wife has medical issues which have taken her off a solo bike permanently. And I keep making excuses not to ride. Well. No more. Last week I went to see an orthopedic doc because of knee pain. I have severely thinned cartilage in my left knee (less than 2mm). We will be doing gel injections in the next month or so. But for now, a cortisone shot has brought great relief. Time to drop some weight.

I'm in the process of building a tandem from a pair of older Trek 950 MTBs. I just need some tubing to get this off the ground. Meantime, I've pulled the older Gary Fisher Hoo-Koo-E-Koo a good friend gave me some years back, and rehabbed it. I have my own bike workstand and a nice Bike Nashbar toolbox I've had for years. I fell incredibly awkward and am horribly out of shape, but it feels good to spin the wheels again. And for now, the Fisher is doing just fine.

And while I'm enjoying the Fisher, I'm going to rebuild my old KHS Fiero. It needs a complete overhaul. Everything is out of date (friction shifters still!) and only 12 speeds. I want to ditch the 27" wheels and throw some 700s under it. And I will modify the frame for braze on rear disk OR braze ons for v brakes of some sort. Nova Cycles is a good website for all that stuff. Still has the old Profile aero bar attached to the handlebars. I liked it back in the day, so I'll likely keep it on the bike for an old school look...

Thanks for reading, we'll see how this goes. I'm not in any rush at all, but doggone it, I need to get back to some shape besides, round!

donhaller 07-13-09 08:14 AM

Well, here goes again - another Yo of the YoYo weight loss and fitness.
I have been back on the bike again for a couple of weeks. I hope I can stay with it. I did about 60 miles last week and plan to up that just a little bit this week.

I'm trying to line up a few bike rides including another century for late in the Fall. Perhaps with a goal it will help me keep focused.

RiverCityCyclis 07-15-09 02:12 AM

Keep riding it will come off eventually. I started out at about 205lbs in January, and 5'6" in height. Now I dip under 160 quite often and look to hit 150 soon as I can regain some focus. Believe it or not I basically dusted off my old department store MTB to get into cycling. Once I got hooked then I went out and bought a decent commuter bike since I began riding to work (28 miles rt) and the MTB was falling apart plus more of a workout then I was hoping for :-). Biggest thing for me was my ***** hurt like hell when I started riding. Cycling shorts work wonders, and if you are self consious of the diaper look just toss gym shorts over em like I do.

Welcome, new folks!

Well, this oughta make you two hundred & some-odd pound "fat people" feel better. I'm 6 foot tall / 435lbs. I pudged up around puberty, and it just got worse from there. 300lbs is as light as I've been in adulthood. I've lost & gained hundreds of pounds over my 47 years because when it comes to weight loss, I'm consistently inconsistent.

I joined a health club, but I hate the treadmill, & I'm not too very fond of walking. 30 years (and 200lbs) ago I rode a bike everywhere. I've thought for a long time about getting a bike "after I'd lost some weight". Today, I just got tired of waiting. I went to the bike shop (next door to the cafe where I had breakfast) & dropped almost $500 bucks for a Cannondale C7 with disc brakes. (and an extra-large seat)

I rode my new bike a couple of blocks when I got it home & I feel so awkward on it, I wonder if it wasn't too soon.

But tomorrow (Sunday) morning, I'm going to load it in the back of the truck and find a big empty parking lot and try to get comfortable riding again.

Hey there everyone I just wanted to send out some words of encouragement to all you big guys out there. I started out riding again several years ago tipping the scales at 380 and have come down to 320 and have been stuck there for several years. I decided a few weeks ago to not let that stop me from getting back to my love of racing and last weekend I entered the tour de donut in Staunton, Il. This ride is perfect for us big guys, a 32 mile race with 2 checkpoints and at each check there is donuts and for everyone you eat they take 5 minutes off your total time!!

http://www.bebikeclub.com/tourdedonut/yearspast.html

I finished in 19th place in my age group of 160 riders This is is a huge event that had over 1200 riders. if you are in the area you should check it out!!

This weekend I decided to step it up a notch and try an official sanctioned race a 40k time trial. My goal was to get finished in 1:30 but I got over the line in 1:16:58.
So for all of you out there just keep pedaling and if you think that you want to race someday just go out and have some fun. Just so everyone can get a laugh check out what a clyde on a TT bike looks like. :)

HELLO!
How are all the big fellas doing today? I'm a bit of a new guy here (1st or 2nd post), name is Josh, 26yrs, 5'11", 225lbs. I have pear-itis (most of the weight is in my upper thighs and gut).

I use to ride trails on a BMX when I was younger (back in the 130lb yrs) but I haven't ridden in 9 yrs.
A few months ago I was surfing the internet thinking of getting a motorcycle, then thought about a motorbicycle because it would save me some money, then I thought, "screw it, might as well go all the way!"

So I am still trying to decide on which one but I have to wait for my Oct. bonus to actually get a bike, and the inspiration on this forum is going keep me from changing my mind.

I work with a few sticks that like to ride trails, so hopefully I can convince them to make it a group thing, and if you live anywhere near Norfolk, VA I would be more than happy to get a Clydesdale ride going in Oct. :thumb:

Bikes

Hi,
I'm 6'3" ,235 lbs, down from 270(all time high). I ride a used Cannondale 2002 Caad5 R700 and I think it's a great value. The new Caad9 5's are only about $1400. These are sturdy aluminum bikes. I'm a little afraid of carbon, because of my size. A local bike guy confided in me that he thought 240 was about the weight limit for carbon fiber. I'd like to hear some other opinions. I've haven't riden any modern steel bikes but I like steel would good for big guy. Jamis supposedly makes a good steel road bike. I plan one day when I get to 200lbs ( my goal) to look into titanium which a friend who is 205lbs says is the ultimate for big riders. I'd go with the 700 wheels. I ride on 700x25 tires.

EARTHIRV,

I have a CAAD 9 in my garage right now and have to say that it is a night and day difference in ride quality compared to the frames from even a few years ago. If you look around you can get a CAAD 9 for under a grand. You will want to buy new if you can as they have a top notch warranty. I had an 02 CAAD 5 that cracked at the dropout and cdale replaced with the CAAD 9. no questions asked!!! I have not heard of a specific wieght limit, however please remember that ALUMINUM, TI, AND STEEL WILL CRACK. It took me several weeks to find the creak that had developed that was under the del. hanger. Now carbon is a different story:

CARBON WILL SHATTER!!!!!

I dont want to think about what would have happened if it was carbon, but I dont think that it would have been pretty.

I would not trade my cdale's for anything, if you look that the picture that I just posted about my TT this weekend you will see me on a 1987 cannondale that is still running strong.

I will get a pic of my CAAD 9 up here as soon as I can. I would not trade my cannondales for any amount of money. They are great strong frames!!

weeks52806 07-20-09 03:11 PM

Ok here is my baby that i was talking about in my last post:

2009 CAAD 9 56cm in matte black
Mavic Ksyrium SSC SL wheelset
Vredestein Fortezza Tricomp Tires
Bontrager race x lite carbon seatpost
Bontrager race x lite blade carbon handlebars
Bontrager Inform saddle
Shimano Ultegra 10 speed triple drivetrain with 24-39-50 chainring
Shimano Dura Ace Rear derailleur
Sram 11-28 10 speed cassette (so I can get up the hills!!! :) )
Reynolds Ouzo Pro full carbon fork
Look cx-6 pedals
Blackburn carbon bottle cages.

I dont really care for the paint but it was a warranty replacement and there was not a lot of color choices. They have a purple and silver flake under the matte clear coat. what a waste, that would have looked really good under a gloss clear, oh well.

Had this at the shop when I build it and it tipped the scales at 17.9#

Please let me know what you think about it.

Well, I have stepped into the world of biking again. Being a uber-clyde (6’2 and 400 lbs) I went with the house bike the Hardrock but with 29” tires. It’s been over 30 years since I last road my Varsity and am looking forward to riding again. I guess its time to delurk and join the herd.

Hi everyone! So happy to find this forum :D

I'm a new rider, only deciding to get into cycling because it's more fun than walking or running (and you get to see lots more scenery!). Although it would be nice to shed some pounds, I'm much more interested in being healthy, both mentally and physically.

I'm 5'6" and somewhere around 270 lbs. I think my body likes being somewhere around 230, but I'd be really happy to get to 200 or so. But I don't really expect it.

I ride a Trek 7.2 FX with a Titec H-Bar to help with keeping my hands and back from being tired. I'm still struggling to find the perfect saddle, though. And shorts!!! I'm still just wearing some cheap pair of yoga pants.

I also sew, and so I'm trying to figure out some stylish cycling outfit that looks smart but is also functional. Right now I'm designing something steampunkish out of this wonderful wool-silk blend fabric I have.

rustman 07-20-09 09:25 PM

Hi C's & A's,
I'm getting back into cycling after 6 years. During that time I put on around 80lbs, peaking at 330 in February of this year (I'm 5'10"). In February '09, I joined Weight Watchers and have been riding my exercise bike, and lifting weights 3-4x/week and I'm now down to 296. A month ago my 8yr old daughter asked me to ride with her around the neighborhood so I dusted off my 10yr old Bianchi Eros and pumped up the tires. We only went a few miles, but I loved every second of it. And now the exercise bike even less enjoyable...

So here I am, bitten by the bug again. I've been perusing the C/A forum quite a bit, learning about what shorts to get for my large (but shrinking) behind, where to find wide shoes, and so many other topics. Happy to join this terrific group of people.

Hi

I'm a bit of a behemoth of a clyde 6'0 and tipping the scales a bit over 315. I recently picked cycling back up a few months ago, after not really being on a bike since i was 15 (7 years ago). I've picked up riding to attempt to get back into shape. Going to watch my diet and ride every day until i get back down to original weight of 225 when i was playing football in high school. Right now I ride a Lugged Steel raleigh capri 10 speed on steel wheels and a 1980 Schwinn Speedster single speed conversion with chopped bullhorns rolling on steel wheels also that i've recently build

New Cllydesdale

Hi,

I'm fairly new to cycling and I'm glad I found a place for guys who are actually built like we've hit puberty and don't weigh in at 150 lbs.

I started in August of 2008 weighing in at 275 on a 5'10 frame and am down to about 215 now.

Thanks for the forum.
