You can get a cannondale CAAD 9 for right around a grand. That is what I have and also weigh in at about 330.

I found myself in a similar situation a few weeks ago when looking for a commuter to upgrade from my mountain bike. I'm near your size - 6'4", 280#. I looked at steel touring bikes, which are meant to carry weight in the form of cargo, but also do well with a larger rider. I wound up with a Jamis Aurora, and am very happy with it. It's very well-equipped stock, and meets your price requirement. The Fuji Touring is another contender. The Surly Long Haul Trucker has a huge following, but is a bit more expensive and didn't have the stock equipment I wanted.

Good luck!

rims

Guys thanks for the posts, I do have a few Cannondale dealers near me. One more question would be on the rims. Stock rims are the CXP22's as opposed to the kysirium that you have. Will the CXP22's hold my weight? Thanks

Ok in researching it seems the rims are sturdy. Now , it says they come with a single hub or fixed hub? Does this mean it comes with limited gears available? Thanks for answering the noob !!! hahahah

Well lets start here I turned 50 in May, single for the last 3-1/2 years with 3 great kids and 4 wonderfull grand kids.
I am a CNC programmer at the same company for the last 25 years.
Into drag racing, guns and just learning to play the guitar.
Started riding the bike to help get some pounds off ( I started at 421 pounds on April the 14th) just bought a Specialized's Globe Carmel 1 about 5 weeks ago and am down 40 pounds so far.
Anyway thats about it.
Take care
Tony

Hi all, just got into cycling recently thanks to a friend who is now my riding partner and a good find in the classifieds. Just turned 23 here this month, and i'm 5'9 and am now down to 239 pounds which is nice because I was up to almost 260 before I started riding about 2 months ago. When i started riding was rough just doing a few miles and now I am logging in about 40-60 miles a week. I am riding a Specialized Hardrock sport right now that I put some smoother tires on to help with the fact that I am only riding on pavement, the knobby tires were a little rougher ride and a little noisy. In the near future though I am going to be getting a road bike and am very excited about it, can't wait to get out on the road and log some more miles!

downtube42 07-31-09 09:42 PM

Woo hoo, down to 196, below 200 for the first time in 15 years and down from a personal high of 221 about 6 months ago.

turbo2L 07-31-09 10:16 PM

I'm 5'7" 220, and I currently own a Wal Mart Mongoose Snare MTB. I only bought it because I didn't want to waste a lot of money on a nice bike only to have it be a passing fancy. Fortunately, I've been sticking to it and I'm now going to get a good entry-level road bike, and as soon as I sell my AK-47 I'll have some free funds to purchase it. I'm planning on getting a Trek 1.2 unless someone can convince me otherwise.

I just got into biking recently (about 2 months ago) for fitness. When I got out of the Army in '00 I was 175. Seems like I put on almost 10 lbs a year, and I've finally had enough. So far I haven't been losing WEIGHT, but my girlfriend says it looks like I am. I'm guessing the muscle gain in my legs is offsetting the fat loss?

Regardless, my endurance is better and I feel better, and I don't feel the urge to smoke as much either (When I first started, I would take smoke breaks during my ride lol. Now I don't even bring a pack).

So when I get a road bike, look out! I can't wait! I'm so tired of everyone buzzing by me on their road bikes while I'm pedaling my ass off on my 39 lb monster truck. My current bike would be like riding a Trek 1.2, with another Trek 1.2 on my back, but with the wheels from that one dragging behind me like a boat anchor.

BCAC 08-01-09 08:18 PM

I'm 6' 3" and 208 pounds. I started the year at 228 lbs and have a goal of getting down to 195. I'm 55 and like many others, I used to be very fit, but exercise has been very inconsistent the past 15 years or so.

I got a GF Hi Fi 29er earlier this year and I've been riding it almost every day, at first almost purely trails.

http://integrity.smugmug.com/photos/...bau9y-XL-1.jpg

I actually got the bicycle to improve my conditioning for motorcycle dirt biking, which it did.

http://integrity.smugmug.com/photos/...4_THvhn-XL.jpg

But I've really gotten into bicycling. And more and more of my miles are on street instead of the trails.

So......I'm lobbying heavily for a road bicycle. :D

The rims will be fine, but it's the number and type of spokes that matter and that also means it depends on the hubs you have. I've shimano hubs with 32 stainless steel spokes on the back and 28 on the front. I'm 280lbs - you used to be able to get 36 spoke hubs but don't know if they are still available

Caad 9

I have a 2002 CAAD 5 and love the bike. I'm thinking about buying a new CAAD 9. I'm 235 down from 270, 6'3". I think the CAAD 9 after looking around is the best deal on the market for big guys. I ride on 700x25 tires which I recommend. I would check out the Surly bikes because everyone has different likes and besides the Long Haul Trucker, I'd check out the Cross Check which is a cyclocross bike and has fatter tires, 700x34. I've riden on a few cyclocross bikes and really like them but all are more then $1000 except the Cross Check which is about $1000

raweber 08-03-09 02:11 PM

Howdy. I'm 6'1" and 220, down from 250 last winter. Doc put me on the South Beach Diet when I was diagnosed with diabetes, and I lost the 30 pounds in my first two months. Been steady ever since then.

I've been cycling for 10 years (40 YO) but after a few seasons off, I've really gotten back into it this summer. I have dreams of riding a century this fall. My ride for the last 6 years is a Cannondale T800 touring bike. I use it to commute home from work (take the bus in so I'm not all sweaty), and longer rides on the weekends (like Friday afternoon home from work - the long way).

Shingen 08-06-09 02:52 PM

New to the forums and biking. I've been lurking around the boards and thought this might be the place for me to post my first post, seeing as I'm 6'3" 306lbs. I'm 27 and I used to weigh about 275-280 but my weight shot up 20lbs when I started my new job two years ago and I stopped going to the gym.

I've started going back to the gym about six months ago and have lost about 5lbs but have struggled to get past my current plateau. I'd like to get to 250 but my current goal is my old weight of 275-280.

The plan: start commuting the three miles to work and back and riding the trails around my apartment on the weekends. I purchased a Schwinn Trailway 700c hybrid from target, and despite what you LBS supporters might be thinking it suits me just fine. I've put about 100 miles on it so far and have loved every minute of riding. I'm really looking forward to commuting!

Whale getting back on bike

Just joined today. Trying to get serious about losing the poundage that has, with a few interruptions, steadily accumulated since I retired from active duty. I'm now 55 years old and over 400 pounds. High blood pressure, but under control and no other problems. I just need to get back down to a reasonable weight. Right now I just ordered some handle bars to fit on an old Raleigh "Touring 14". Once they get here I get to try and sort out how to get the original drop handlebar end shifters to work with the riser handlebar I need to be able to sit on the bike. I've got the frame fitted with an old set of Phil Wood 48 spoke tandem wheels from back in the day lo many years ago when I used to race and got tired of spokes in the training wheels breaking all the time. I'll probably need new tires, the bike's been in storage forever.

Wish me luck.

mike

Joined today. Was looking for a site for Big guys and Gals who like, want to can ride. I am in heaven. Going to to the garage and resurrect and old Schwinn MTB. Air up the tires and start the journey.I used to ride a MTB to work about 10 years ago (5 miles each way) But that was 100lbs ago. Started my weight loss at 343 down to 313 in three weeks. Goal is 185. What is a good used brand of bike to look for? I will be riding mostly pavement. Clyde for Life

Gilla Gorilla 08-10-09 02:49 PM

I think I just barely fit in here maybe I'm about 6'3" and weigh in right at 200. SO I guess you could call me an anorexic clydesdale? =P

Tom Stormcrowe 08-10-09 02:57 PM

At 6'3", you're defined as a Clyde anyhoo. Welcome to Clydes, Gilla.

A Clyde is either/or/and over 6'/200# and up.

Hey there everyone I just wanted to send out some words of encouragement to all you big guys out there. I started out riding again several years ago tipping the scales at 380 and have come down to 320 and have been stuck there for several years. I decided a few weeks ago to not let that stop me from getting back to my love of racing and last weekend I entered the tour de donut in Staunton, Il. This ride is perfect for us big guys, a 32 mile race with 2 checkpoints and at each check there is donuts and for everyone you eat they take 5 minutes off your total time!!

http://www.bebikeclub.com/tourdedonut/yearspast.html

I finished in 19th place in my age group of 160 riders This is is a huge event that had over 1200 riders. if you are in the area you should check it out!!

This weekend I decided to step it up a notch and try an official sanctioned race a 40k time trial. My goal was to get finished in 1:30 but I got over the line in 1:16:58.
So for all of you out there just keep pedaling and if you think that you want to race someday just go out and have some fun. Just so everyone can get a laugh check out what a clyde on a TT bike looks like. :)

Great job buddy... I noticed that you are riding on a ksyrium sl on the front wheel.... Any problems? What rear wheel is that? I have some sl's coming on a new bike and am afraid that my 280# is to heavy for them... Thanks

Lord Chaos 08-13-09 05:29 AM

When I went to the shop to pick out parts for the Turner 5-Spot I bought in 2003, I said to the salesman (Monty, at Helen's in Santa Monica, good guy) "Look at me. I'm 6-1, 220 pounds. I'm not concerned about grams, but I am concerned about sturdy." So, that's what we did, and the bike has been trouble-free, wheels still true 6 years later.

I'd like to get rid of 30 pounds or so, but I like food a lot. The Tour de Donut sounds like my kind of ride, but I usually end up doing "Fatburner Specials" in the local mountains. Just take off from the house with a 1-litre water bottle and head north along the beach to one of the routes that climb. There's always something new to see up there, from animals to flowers and clouds. I come back four hours or so later, refreshed... and hungry. :)

weeks52806 08-13-09 05:41 AM

PROGUY747- you are right that is a sl front and that was borrowed from my CAAD 9, the rear wheel in the TT pic is just a 32 spoke mavic wheel with a cover. I have the SSC SL rear wheel on my CAAD 9 and have only had one broken spoke but no other isses than than. you should be just fine on them 280#.

Intro

Good afternoon everyone, my name is Saint. I am 6' 275#s. I ride a Ridley Excalibur all carbon bike with Sram Rival components, fulcum 7 racing wheels and an Fizik Aliante seat. I have been riding off and on for a couple of years. I started a few years back with a Javelin Aluminum cross bike because I thought my weight could not be on a carbon bike. I have learned since then that carbon bikes are much stronger these days then what they were years ago. I will try to post some pics so all can see:thumb:
