New to this site. What a great thread! I'm 6' 235 lbs. 40 y.o. I have a mid 80's seki 2400 road bike, a '96 giant iguana and I just bought a '97 Specialized Ground Control FS. With Spring coming to Idaho early, I can't wait to get out in the mountains and start riding the Specialized. I've always been heavy but loved being ative outdoors. I did several dualthalons and ran some 1/2 marathons but the running started to wear me down. I've been spinning and swimming all winter and there's a mini tri coming up in May. Who knows? Maybe I'll be at 210 and ready to kick butt!

I am new to the site & just wanted to say hi to everyone here, I am 5'9" and at 240 Lbs. now, down from 273Lbs. last year, once I hit 250 the VA ordered me a bike, a "Force G" by "Top end" I have not received it yet, but it is due to be here soon. I have been browning a "XLT Pro" also by "Top end" & they have the same gearing so I know I will be asking for advices here once I have all my needed info on hand. Nice to meet you all.

Pretty much did it the old fashion way, I joined sparkpeople.com and logged everything that went into my mouth and exercise every day for at least 30 minutes. I started walking to work, about 8 miles, in 2 hours and 40 minutes (leaving real real early in the morning, lol) I have signed up for a 5k run in March, a 63 mile bike ride in May, and one in June.
I rode 48 miles last weekend, and I don't think I could have done 5 miles six months ago when I weighed 290. Cycling to me is the next step in a change of lifestyle, and this has to be one of the best sites I have come across, with the wealth of knowledge and the friendly help you get from the members.

This may be my first and last post (I hope). I am hovering right at 200# right now. I am down from 208# in the last 3 weeks. I changed my eating habits (much less and not much sugar).
I am working on the fixed trainer and roller. I live up in Northern IL so I will not be hitting the pavement for a while still. I am 5'8 and 42 years old and my goal is 170#
I picked up my road bike in late August of last year and added the hybrid in Dec to go with the family on the bike paths and just quickies around the neighborhood. Even if the weight does not come off, I feel much better....
Here are my bikes......

New to the board, this is my first post. I'm 6'3" 245 and a personal trainer so most of the 245 is muscle but there is a good 20lbs of fat that could come off. Blew out my knee in January playing basketball and was spending a ton of money getting around the city to see my clients. After spending $500 on cabs in the month of january I said enough is enough and followed through with buying a bike. I had thought about it before and looked around a little bit on Craigslist but at my height i wasn't finding anything used in a suitable frame size. I ended up buying a Giant Rapid flatbar which I absolutely love. Only mods to it thus far are Pinhead Skewers for security purposes which are awesome. the bike is so fast, I zip around to all my clients here in Manhattan in no time and I've already done a couple of 20+ mile rides. Down side is I've already blown on both tires courtesy of NYC's lovely streets but replaced them with armadillos. I'm presently already looking for a dedicated road bike and will probably go the bikesdirect route and build myself. I'm an avid golfer and build golf clubs as a hobby so if anyone golfs and wants to trade clubs for bike equipment give me a holler!

Greeting. I am 6'2 @ 360lbs and want to get back into mountain biking after 17 yrs. Does anyone have any suggestions for a Mountain Bike under $500 or am I wasting my time looking? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

5' 10", 225lb, 40 y/o. Started riding again in October and rode all winter 2-3 times a week. Haven't lost any weight but my waist size did change. So I guess it just moved? am looking to ride 75-100 miles a week once the weather breaks. Need to change my eating habits though or I won't take off the 20 or so pounds that needs to come off!

Longtime lurker, first-time poster.
I'm 33, 5' 9", and 275 lbs (down from a high of 310). I started biking last spring, when I moved to Vermont without a car. I bought a bike for basic transportation, after not riding for 15 years, and fell in love. I liked biking so much I put off buying a car until November. I commuted to work (11 miles round-trip), and I work second shift, so I rode down a lot of country roads without streetlights. I have A LOT of night gear.
Sunday, I rode 7 miles on the Burlington Bike Path. It was my first time on my bike in 3 months. My bike was a bit wobbly (I think the rear wheel needs truing again), and I encountered slush, clueless pedestrians, and an emergency McGuyver-style repair, but I loved every minute. I've signed up for Montreal's Tour de la Nuit and Tour de l'Ile in June, and I want to ride in Quebec's Eastern Townships Challenge in September.
My bike is a Jamis Commuter 2.0, which I bought used. I just replaced the fenders. It needs some paint and a new seat post. I've had enough wheel problems that I'm considering putting on 700cc tandem wheels.

Ok, I know there are quite a few riders over 200 pounds out there, who are you and what do your ride, we dont want the skinny twigs to have all of the fun . Why do you ride or get back into riding, was it for exercise to loose weight or have you always been riding? At what weight exactly does one become a Clydesdale?
I ride a Devinci 2001 Caribou touring bike that I got used 3 years ago:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/spectraldesign/2828490769/
Was an avid cyclist as a youngin' and a utilitarian rider as a young adult but dropped-out when I moved to Boston in '96. So happy to be back on two wheels powered by ME again I ride for mental health, physical health, and -ostensibly- to lose weight, though that doesn't seem to work out too well... still sporting a decent pair of man-titties c'est la vie.
My average velocity on a commute is ~21-22 km/h with traffic and lights, etc. When I did the Ride For Heart last year on the closed highway I did much better I did 100 kilometres at an average of 29 km/h. Hopefully I can better that this year!

I'm only 15 haha. Gonna be 16 soon ...
I'm 5'4" and 210 lbs- hoping to get out of the Clydesdale group to tell the truth [no offence guys!]
Recently got in a decent accident so I pretty much screwed my 30+ spoked wheels.. But now I'm riding...
A 2005 Giant OCR Limited. [yellow decals]
Ultegra 30 speed.
Mavic Aksium front wheel, 20 spokes.
Forgot the rear-
Major plans to become a competitive roadie, once I get rid of the love handles the spandex so brilliantly hides... Not.
I've got a sprinter's legs- due to major obesity of over 250 lbs earlier in the year, as well as family genetics of massive thighs and relatively small calves.
Anybody have any tips on how to break through this plateau I've hit of 205-215? Really want to get down to 160 by mid-season... Thanks!

Hello. I'm new here. After a week of deliberation, I finally broke down and went to the bike shop nearby me. Who knew that people of my size could ride a bike? Now I've got one with 29 inch wheels and an XL frame. This is an amazing machine. With disc brakes! Like, on a bike! Wow! It's a beautiful machine.
I'm somewhere above 250lbs. Not sure exactly how much. I thought I was going to be the only big guy in there, but most of the gurus in the shop were clydesdales too. A year ago, I began saving money for a new computer to play world of warcraft. I'm going to spend it on a bike instead.

I just got in from a 85 mile ride.
Congratulation on the New Bike.

I peak in on this forum from time to time. I'm 49 , 5 '9" 205 down from 217. I live in Staten Island NYC, a VERY hilly terrain ,and as a result have not ridden as much as I'd like. I have a cruise planned for may and am committed to dropping 15 to get to 190. I own a regular road bike that must be close to 25 years old but rides well ( Panasonic sport 500). I've been trying to meet fellow bikers in NY , but so far no luck.

Hi, All,
Just joined the forums, so some of this is similar to what I just put in the Newcomers forum, but anyway...
I'm 44, going back to grad school for a career change (Ph.D. in meteorology). Been into cycling on and off since my teens. Back then I used to ride 40-mile rides fairly frequently with friends, then got away from it when I went to college the 1st time. Got out of shape until I was motivated in 2002 to do the JDRF century ride in Death Valley (my 1st and so far only century). Trained that summer and completed the century, but then got away from cycling again. Well, I'm trying to get back into it again (hopefully permanently) and get back in shape after letting myself go the 1st 2 years of grad school while I was commuting 75 miles one-way (wife and I have now moved closer to school). Definitely a Clydesdale, and I've never been fast, but when I am in shape I like long distances. Never been much of a climber, though - getting out of the saddle alone has always been a problem for me, even in my best condition. I have a Giant OCR2 that I got for training and the century ride in 2002, but I'm only now trying to get used to clipless pedals (in 2002, I had too much trouble getting unclipped but now I've found cleats for my shoes that seem easier). As for other interests, I'm also into reading, travel, and I'm just getting into learning fencing.
Right now I think I'm about 285, 5'9". When I was in my best shape for the DV century, I was still 225. I mainly enjoy bicycling for the fun of getting somewhere by a machine powered only by me. The fitness benefits have usually been secondary in my mind, but still important. I want to do another century. Probably not this summer, though hopefully next.

It officially became spring yesterday afternoon. I spent that time on my bike.
I weigh 233 pounds at six foot one inches tall. Age: 57. I ride an old Schwinn, Chicago made steel frame road bike.
After riding a bicycle for the first time in 20 years this morning, I went out again this afternoon. This time I hit the bike trail and rode 22 miles. Again, I took my time. I'm sure there are some cyclists out there who tonight are telling people about the idiot who almost rode into their path today . I'm still getting re-adjusted to the gears and control of the bike.
In fact, I took a spill while crossing a road. I managed to get on my feet and drag the bike out of the way of oncoming traffic. That's kind of a amazing in itself, because a year ago when I weighed about 450 lbs., if I fell down, I needed to find some sturdy object to grab so I could pull myself up. I got up. Got back on the bike, and finished my journey.
My butt and elbow still hurts tonight from the fall, but lucky for me I wore the helmet my wife bought for me. I also landed on my head during the fall. And to think I almost didn't wear a helmet because I thought it wasn't cool.
I'll always wear one now.

Hello, I'm new here. I'm 6'4" 250 lbs riding a Fuji Captiva cruiser for the 4-1/2 miles to/from work (or around town). I'm thinking about buying a new bike as I still find the handlebars too low on this one and they can't be adjusted further. I'd like to sit more vertically: I'm commuting not racing. I've finally got the seat extended up to a comfortable height. Anyone here own/try the "Zize" bikes from www.supersizedcycles.com?
I tried the knee savers (30 mm x 1/2" stainless steel from SCOR) and broke both left and right. I did my best to get them tight--I think their steel is just too soft. I emailed them to ask if the titanium was stronger, but they never replied. It was much more comfortable using the knee savers, allowing my feet spread to a natural distance rather than riding with my arches on the outer tips of the pedals. Does anyone have a source for extra long (wide) pedals?
What size and tire pressure do big guys find works best? My rear tire (2.125" wide cruiser type) is rated to 40psi but with the bike loaded down (me + laptop + change of clothes + misc.) it looks too flat. I'd like to find something comfortable.
I got a NuVinci transmission put in my rear wheel from Harris Cyclery mail order. It's been a good performer and I wouldn't want to go back to standard chain shifting. Maybe it could be geared a little higher with a smaller freewheel, but my bike is so heavy I never get going very fast. I've never had it slip, even when I'm pedaling hard enough to break the knee savers!
Thanks for any advice

I'm 5'10", weigh 210, and ride the upper end Specialized Roubaix with the strongest carbon frame. I put on Easton EA90SL wheels which are said to be great for hippos. I ride 25 miles 4 days/week and expect to drop below 200lbs after a while...a while.

Terry66, you look awesome! What a change! You have really inspired me! I am 5'6" and about 280 pounds, most of it on my hips (oh yes, I have child-bearing hips... could raise a baseball team with the size of my hips). My whole family have taken up cycling in the past few weeks, in support of our son who has begun track racing. I am hoping that this might, finally, help me to shift the weight. Just bought myself a Cannondale 6 Fem 3 (09 model), have a trusty old Shogun metro hybrid to get around for milk and bread etc. I think I might be the only Athena here???
Thanks (in advance) for your support!

Hi, new "Clydesdale" here. I just introduced myself in the "Introductions" section and thought I should do the same here.
My name is Dennis. I'm 49 years old (turning 50 this month) and at 6'2" and 270 lbs, I'm definitely a Clydesdale.
I've always been a big guy - even as a starved down, distance runner in my 20s I was 195 at my lightest. That's changed over the years. I ballooned up to my heaviest at 297. That's when I got back onto a bike. I can't run anymore - plantar fasciitis in both heels and 2 bad knees put an end to that. So onto a bike.
I picked up a 1980 Schwinn Super Le Tour on craigslist. I bought it because it was cheap, a large frame (25"), and even though it was made of steel (strong enough to support my weight) it was still relatively "lightweight" at around 26 lbs.
I'm averaging around 50-60 miles per week and starting to increase that. My wife and I ride together and it's been a good thing for our marriage as well.
