Oh, that could be....interesting.

We'll need photos!

It's great to hear that your wife is enjoying the cycling too. She probably enjoys the losing weight aspect of cycling almost as much as you do!

Even with two people pedaling, that old single speed tandem with close to 400 lbs is a pretty good work out. We have been having a BLAST on the tandem. She don't know it but I'm buying a new tandem for us in a couple more weeks to surprise her. That leaves me a couple of weeks to figure out how to get the bike home and put together without her finding out. I ride a motorcycle, she drives the truck.
Here is one idea, ride the old tandem to the LBS your getting the new one from, ride in solo on the old one, out with the new one..... She better like surprises though otherwise you could spend a month pushing the dog out of the way, as you try to sleep in his house.

Talk to the LBS! They may do the assembly and delivery for you! I know my local LBS will for someone who spends that kind of Green!

Well we live out in the boonies so the "LBS" is a Walmart 13 miles away. I'm just getting a Kent cruiser tandem. Nothing fancy or expensive unless you compare it to our $17 tandem. I know about the quality and consider a X-Mart bike a "KIT" so no surprises on this end. To be honest, Even if it was a $10K tandem I would still tear it down to the bare frame and check everything. I'm not sure if it's part of the former mechanic in me or the current aerospace machinist in me that makes me examine/tinker with everything. Maybe a little of both. On the freebie bikes I got,I had to keep telling myself to put the micrometers and dial indicators up and just put the dang things back together. They are just bicycles! It just hit me...I work 2nd shift so the wife is asleep when I get home. I could sneak her truck into town and pick up the bike while she is sleeping(wally world is open 24hrs), stash it behind the house and put it together after she leaves for work.

Shoot, put that fish down and you'll lose a quick 10-15 pounds!

Well I forgot about the "durring" pic.s of the tear down/ rebuild just after I started. I did manage to get one shot with the wheel off and measuring a ball bearing.
and here is the finished pic.

Only when I'm telling fish stories. Otherwise I would only lose 2 or 3 pounds.

Hey!!! I feel ripped off! That's a lot cheaper way of measuring a bearing than the stupid ruler with the holes I just bought!

You must get quite a few envious glances when you're out on that tandem cruiser!

Not to mention that you've stirred tool lust in me...I know it's 'supposed' to be a guy thing, but I do enjoy wandering around in hardware stores to scretly covet tools .

Your not alone, I know several women who like hardware stores, my better half being one of them, now if I could only get her to like bicycles, then I would be happy, it would be cool to ride together, but alas, she choses to remain bikeless.
