I'm actually thinking about bringing a portable hot water maker to work with oatmeal packets and just making the stuff right here, since there's always periods of downtime.
you don't have a microwave? those will heat up water... also if you have a water dispenser that does hot water, its usually hot enough for oatmeal

What about instant oatmeal?

All this talk about oatmeal may make me make a change from Bran Flakes to Oatmeal.

I decided to do some experimenting with alternative sweeteners, and came up with a tasty (and healthy) new oatmeal recipe:

1/2 cup oatmeal (not instant)
1/3 cup raisins (I use organic raisins)
1 tsp. butter substitute (i.e. I can't Believe It's Not Butter Fat Free)
1 oz. nonfat milk (or milk substitute)
2 oz. apple juice (not from concentrate - I prefer organic 100% juice)
Cinnamon (to taste)

Preparation: bring 1 cup water to a boil. Add oatmeal & reduce heat to medium, cook until slightly runny. Add raisins, butter, & cinnamon, cook until thick. Add milk & apple juice, & more cinnamon if needed, and cook until slightly runny. Mixture will thicken as it cools. Serve with whole grain toast if desired (+110 calories per slice).

Prepared, it's a very filling ~350 calories, with very low fat, lots of good carbs, and no artificial sweeteners. I was actually very surprised at the taste - the juice really spices things up.

Anyway, enjoy!

OK..I never thought this would be me, but with the hot weather, I've been waking up early to ride, and after my first upset stomach ride, have joined the oatmeal club.
