i spray painted my bike !!!
i found a schwinn varsity and,the green paint was fading but i wasnt thinking about that. i just liked that it had a heavy GAS PIPE FRAME. Icould beat this frame with a hammer and,it might not dent.
anyway,i was in the shed and,saw like 7 cans of spray paint.next thing i know i have that varsity stripped and, sanded.
i wouldnt have thought that cans of spray paint would give a good finish, but its not bad. not perfect, but better than the flaking paint that was on it. im gonna CLEAR COAT IT.then take the gear off of my grand sports and,kit it out.
this will be my everyday riding bike. im happy because,i just didnt feel good riding on my fathers little tour de france bikes with my 320lb rump. but now, with the good old schwinn gas pipe frame,i dont have to worry about breaking anything. as soon as it dries,i will post some pics.
i know im not the first person to spray paint a bike. but i am so happy with the looks of it. and now i can just bomb away without worrying about ruining one of those little 20 pound bikes. the 40 pound schwinn should hold up just fine.

I think this is a great* development! People don't give those old Schwinns enough credit. Touring folk have gone across continents on them! They are reliable, stable, and can support anything you can give them. I like them a lot.
I think, in general, those old steel rides are terrific Clyde bikes.
Good going!

Yes, we absolutely need pictures. When my commuter was looking bad I striped all the paint off and polished the aluminum. I enjoy it more than the 2k road bike in my garage.

I spray painted my Schwinn mtb candy lime with a silver glitter undercoat. It's not bad, better than the color it was...
I've got an old non-identifiable older bike that I'm currently striping and rebuilding. I should start painting it next week. Should be fun and a great bike when it's finished!

I just wish I could find the old spray bombs that Schwinn used to sell. That stuff was noxious as anything, but it matched and dried very quickly. It was made for the shops to do spot touch ups or full frames if needed. Most paint now takes DAYS if not WEEKS to properly cure before you assemble them. I've made that mistake myself after a rattle can frame paint. I only let it dry a couple of days, and it still nicked up due to soft paint.

No offense meant at all, quite the opposite: That bike is so ugly and tasteless that it's come out the other side and is somehow gorgeous and very cool. Is it me or did you paint the tires?

It looks like an art installation. You painted the chain* gold. Does this bike move?

sorry,it took so long.but i ended up babysitting a 6 and 7 year old this weekend. topped off with a trip to the zoo today. WHAT A MISTAKE THAT ZOO TRIP WAS. musta been a million people there i didnt know, monday is free day ! we ended up in a lot, about a mile from the gate. on a close to 90 degree day. luckily the boys had fun. they wanna go again.real soon. we,ll see.
anyway,im gonna see if i can get some pictures and, post them tomorrow. but goldie has me beat. that bike is awesome. after reading,i had to go back and look. yes,the chain was painted too.
i did manage to put the seatpost back on. i also noticed that the frame doesnt seem to flex, like the reynolds and, chro mo frames do, when i get in the saddle. im thinking its gonna be a good ride for this clyde with some good wheels on her. will let you know in the next day or 2.

i finally got around to trying to put it back together.the krylon came out better than i thought.it looks pretty good.and i happened to stop at an out of the way thrift store, because i will go in now looking for good deals on things. so i walk in the door and right there is a row of bikes.i look down the row and see the schwinn badge. look at the brakes, which i needed for my spray paint varsity and, they look good.so i push it to the counter the girl says $10. when i get it home and look at it,it looks new.i really dont know if anyone ever rode it its a peach.here it is. a camelback varsity.
notice how the top tube curves . i love it.but it is to small for me.notice the schwinn plastic handlebar tape,is still intact.i just took it aloose to take the calipers off.BUT THE BIKE IS IMMACULATE. My rich brothers wife says the goodwill in their area is where to go to get good bikes at.i will go see this weekend.
