Going clipless

In preparation for a century in two weeks I decided to change my hybrid's stock 35mm semi-quasi-kinda-sorta knobbies to a set of 32 road tires. The 35's are original equipment and I put 1600 miles on the bike since I bought it in March...they aren't quite worn out, but are worn enough to justify new shoes.

While I was in Performance picking up the new skins, I noticed that their house brand double sided pedals are on sale. The ones that are clipless on one side and platform on the other. I figure that if the clipless bother me during the long ride, I can always flip them over and ride on the platform side.

After changing the rubber and installing the pedals, I only had a few minutes of daylight left, so I only rode a few miles on them, but so far so good. I'll try a 25 mile shake-down run tomorrow and maybe 55 - 60 miles on Monday.

Congrats I went clipless 3 months ago. Istarted with shimano 520's on spd shoes. I loved em but needed more float so I switched to Crank brothers canwady pedals. There Mountain pedals but the platform is nice when I want to go w/o cycling shoes; plus I didn't feel like paying $190 for the titanium road pedal.

I wouldn't go clipless just before a big ride and flipping the pedal and using a stiff shoe with a cleat might not be such a great idea either. Riding clipless is like everything else bike related, it takes time to adjust and fine tune it. I also use 520 pedals and maybe someday will try eggbeaters, but will always use MTB shoes. Today a major road was closed due to fallen power lines and I had to carry my bike 200 yards over a dry and sandy creek bed. Try that in road shoes!

I am hoping that a 25 mile ride tomorrow, followed by 55 on Monday will let me know if I'm going to have a problem; I should have enough lead time to recover and (if necessary) switch the pedals back. The clipless are the SPD style, but I'm using MTB shoes not road shoes.

I really don't think I'll have too much trouble. Two weeks ago I had a tooth pulled on Saturday and completed a metric century on Sunday

Those are both very good changes to support a century in 2 weeks. Get out and put some miles on with the clipless. Your quads might hurt a little until you get 2 rides of 15 miles or more. Better to get that muscle pain worked out prior too.

Take those Campus pedals back to Performance, and swap 'em for the Shimano 324's.

You will be glad you did, and they are much better to ride on.

If they aren't on sale, wait until they are.

What makes them better to ride on?

eggbeaters are great. I have road and mountain shoes. I just got the road shoes they are taking a while to get the hang of but they are more efficent.
