A question for us non-average folks re: cycling clothing

My riding distances have increased enough to warrant the purchase of some bike clothing-specifically shorts or other protective undergarments. Hope you would be willing to share your favorite online resources and products?

Like most other sports, it's difficult to find items off the rack. Thanks in advance for your help.

I buy most of my stuff from Performance or REI. Both are local, but they frequently have web only sales. After trying a variety, the ONLY brand of shorts I buy is Pearl Izumi.

I've recently started riding more frequently. After a couple of rides in regular shorts, I decided that I needed some cycling shorts with a protective chamois. So I bought a pair of Pearl Izumi Quest shorts with a 3D Tour chamois from Nashbar. The chamois is thick, so it's a bit awkward, but I haven't had any pain in the "sit bones". These shorts also have nice elastic that helps them stay put, which is a good thing.

I'm pretty big, so I carry a pair of light nylon baggy running shorts to slip over the bike shorts if I'm going to a place where I need to be concerned about my appearance. There are also baggy shorts with chamois, but I have nto yet tried those.

I've had good luck with Aerotech. https://www.aerotechdesigns.com/

LL Bean has a jersey I like called the "Comfort Cycling Jersey" https://www.llbean.com/ I bought a similar one off Nashbar for around the same price, but I like LL Bean's a little better.

I have tried aerotech twice and neither pair were worth owning. Pearl Izumi is what I really like. I may try more, but I really like the PI shorts that I have now.

We have bought some stuff from https://www.championusa.com/

It is NOT biker-specific gear, but the double-dry t-shirts fit nice and have a racy feel at $20/ea. And they have sizes up to 3X. I see they have some compression gear but I've not tried it.

I just bought two pairs of Pearl Izumi Slice shorts from Performance bike. They were on sale for 10% off and I had a coupon for an additional 20% off. I ordered one size larger than my normal clothing size and the fit is perfect. The shorts are very well made and the chamois is one of the best I've ever used. Good stuff!

I always have luck with these:

https://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...at%3A%20Shorts

Of course, I don't ride nearly as much as some people on here, so your mileage may vary.

I have some performance stuff. I find their sizing is inconsistent between items - an XL in one set of shorts is an XXL in another. Also, their jerseys are a little short for someone who is 6' 1".

+1000. This variation is very frustrating. I think the manufacturers re-label whatever they have left in stock to fulfill Performance's order.

I just left a Performance Bike Store and their largest size for women was XL. Their sizing charts didn't even include anything larger. I'm looking on their Website for the recommended Pearl Izumi products and it looks like they're either out of stock of all XXL sizes (the earliest availability is 01/30 - end of January, really?), or just don't make them that size.

I found a pair of XXL Pearl Izumi shorts at Nashbar.com - thank you for that referral. We'll see how they fit. I wasn't able to find a sizing chart anywhere on either site, so I'm a bit nervous about how these will fit me.

Thank you to everyone for sharing your favorite clothing resources. I just got back to cycling earlier this summer and am losing weight, so I'm trying to avoid spending hundreds just yet. I definitely need to start off with a pair of shorts - especially if I buy a road bike before winter sets in.

for starters, get bib shorts...

www.hammernutrition.com

their stuff is great and very inexpensive, compared to other gear, and it does the job well...

it depends though, because their largest size is a XL, but i'm 205 pounds and i wear their medium bib shorts and large jerseys because i like them snug. their shorts do run a bit on the big side though, not quite as big as Pearl Izumi shorts, but close...

that doesn't surprise me.

i've only run into that once so far. i usually wear xl in their padded roadie shorts. i bought a pair of xxl cargo mtb shorts and they're a little on the snug side.

Performance, is a "house" brand, therefore they don't make anything, some house brands use the manufacturers sizing, so lines are inconsistent, between sizes. Other companies will get samples, determine their own sizing, and have the manufacturer label according to their size specifications.
