I went to the LBS today and finally got fit on my bike. I had been holding out until I had spent some time on the bike and could give them an idea of what I wanted. I got their basic fit for $75, I don't know if its expensive for a fit but I paid it.

The owner of my LBS fit me. He put me on the bike on the trainer, had me pedal maybe two or three turns, and told me to get off the bike for a bit. He had a huge grin on his face. "How were you biking before?" He lowered the Saddle 2 INCHES and moved it back 1.5 INCHES . When we were finished with everything he had me spin for a minute or two, double checking from all angles. When he was happy he was convinced riding would be much better. He said it would take a couple of rides to build up my muscles to feel as good as I did in my old position, because I had been working the certain muscles to much and others not enough so far. Reaching the drops is a billion times easier, and the only pain I had been having, which was some lower back pain, is also solved.

What do you know? He said this would be the best money I ever spend on the bike, and that when I loose weight I can come back and get refit for free for the bikes life, as he says a lot of cyclists like me, riding for fitness need it. All in all the 7 mile ride I took afterwords as a test proved to myself I needed that fit, BAD.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

I didn't have a baseline to work from on my fit session, since I hadn't owned a drop bar bike for almost 7 years. But I was surprised at some of the fit differences and the changes my fitter made. Like dropping and shortening the reach to correct a problem I would have tried raising the stem for if left to my own.

my gut says the same might happen to me ... though I worry they will start off by saying "your bike is too bug" or something like that.

but i should prolly swallow my pride and do it

Can't disagree that spending $75 to get the bike to fit right would be a great investment... I should do that too.

mt i was just fit by landry in norwood they did a good job took their time and gave me some tips and pointers in general. i felt good on the bike the next day but burned my legs out following one of his tips that i spin up hills to get stronger, I am a grinder all the way. spinning hurt.

I didn't get the bike through him. I almost did, but I found the same bike on craigslist with over a thousand dollars in upgrade and only 15 miles on most of the components, for $100 less then what the LBS wanted for the bike NOS. I figured even with the fit (which is free if I bought it there, I made out great.) And since I've been in once a week getting accessories, they are happy that I chose them for my bike needs. There are two other Bike Shops in town that they compete with (used to be three), although they all fit different markets, kind of.

I go the "The Bicycle Shop". The other places are known as "Freeze-Thaw Cycles" and "Eddies Bicycle Shop".

Freeze Thaw seemed a hipster/hippy place for me. Nice people but they didn't have the selection, and most of their bikes are recycled older stuff. Not cheap either.

Eddies is more a general wheeled sports store, they also had inline skate and what not. Also not a huge selection.

I'm happy where I go, and the fit was worth the money.
