A tale of two rides

SO I went on my longest ride to date... from my house to the inlaws. Thought it was gonna be 35 miles. Here's what my phone GPS collected

Here's what it really should look like

LOL, wish I could really average 800+ mph, but it's not in the cards.

Unfortunately for my legs, (and ass, and wrists, and feet) the actual distance was closer to 43 miles (about 3 hours) and although I had enough gas in the tank to do the last mile (from the beach to Adams on the Santa Ana river bike trail) at a blistering 25 mph witha tail wind, it was AGONY when I stopped... I did a little cool down for about the last mile or two at a very low gear, but when I got off my hams said enough! They didn't cramp up, but it felt close.

I drank about one bottle of gatorade on the trip, but I'm guessing that was insufficient. I also went through two regular bottles of water (my bottles are only 24 oz, I think I need to ramp that up) and that was insufficient as well. It was overcast when I started and sunny and pretty warm when I finished, although the cool ocean breeze tricks you into thinking it's not that hot.

In other news, Fig Newtons make a nice bike snack and they fit great in jerseys.

All in all a good day on the bike at the beach in Southern California.

No video, Beanz apparently has the patent on that. Sorry.

good ride!

I normally just use water for my rides, gator-aid is too sweet The safety guy in my company will only let our field guys drink Gator-Aid if they pour half of it out and fill it back uo with water.

You might want to look at sporty pal (sportypal.com) for your ride tracking. I like it anyway, it has some good tools on their site to help you train.

Great ride, but not enough fluid. A breeze does dry you out. You might want to add a banana to the jersey pocket as well.

Thought about a banana... tragically, as nice as those river bike paths are, there's no water.

I found a low-cal Gatorade G2, it was less sweet, and I did water it down a bit... I'm still trying to figure out what works best for me and how to get more water when you go further than two little bottles will take you.

I'll check out the sportypal tip - I have a year left on my trimble subscription I think, or 10 months or something... it usually tracks better than that.

I, when it's hot, and I'm going to be riding long distances, make up gatorade (I buy it powdered) at about half strength. Any stronger than that, and I can't drink it. As for finding more water, I've resorted to knocking on doors more than once. One note about gatorade, I find that any bottle that's had gatorade in it will taste of citric acid for the next several fillings, or until it goes through the dishwasher. If that bothers you, get bottles just for it.

For some giggles, look up the thread on the Touring Forum about people taking water from private property without asking. Your knocking on doors is positively counter-revolutionary. :-)

Yeah, I read some of that. Then I decided that I could do better things with my time, like gluing people's tires when they're not looking. Or organizing my toenail clipping collection. Or riding a bike! The places I'm riding in are densely enough populated that I can usually find a person doing something like sitting on the porch to ask.
