Shameless plug for Pedal for Peace, a bike relay.
Hey there all;
I haven't been around a whole lot this summer, mainly because of some medical problems with Mrs. ATCFoody. She is doing fine now, but it was rather scary for a while.
Anyway, I am team captain for the 2010 North UMC Pedal for Peace team, here in the circle city. Pedal for Peace is a 6-hour bike relay that is raising money to promote peace through education in the middle east. This year, the money raised will be split equally between the Central Asia Institute (Greg Mortenson's group, who you may have heard of through such books as "Three cups of tea" and "Stones into Schools") and AWAKEN (Afghan Women And Kids Education and Necessities).
Last night, I had a chance to meet with Bibi Bahrami, founder of AWAKEN. Let me tell you, she is one determined woman. The things she had to endure in Afghanistan during the invasion in the early 80's would humble anyone. Being told to leave the house you grew up in because it was going to be fire bombed the next day, moving from place to place and then growing up in a refugee camp. If Mrs ATCFoody's medical problems this summer didn't re-align our priorities, hearing what the women in Afghanistan had to endure just to try and raise their children sure did.
So, here's the web site for Pedal for Peace. Any donation is welcome, and if you are in the area and want to join team North UMC, by all means, do so. We would love to have you.
Thanks,
D
