Today my wife and I went on the Edgar Felix Bikeway (old railroad tracks converted to paved bike trail) from Wall Twp to Manasquan NJ. The total distance is around 4 miles from where we parked to the end of the trail. Then of course you have to go back. 8 miles round trip. Since this was the first time this year my wife was on a bike I knew she wouldn't want to do the whole trip down and back (there is a 2 mile long 3% uphill on the way back) so I suggested we do part of it. There is also a nice old time general store a mile or so on the trail you can grab some food at so we stopped there along the way. Great Porkroll Egg and Cheese breakfast sandwiches. So we head out on the trail, stopped for breakfast, then continued on. Within the first mile after our food stop my wife says the seat is killing her. I told her to just shift around, she will get used to it. We got to around the 2.5 mile point and I said to her, as she is huffing and puffing and complaining about the seat, we should turn around and head back so she isn't hurting too much.

She said to me, lets go for it. So we make it to the end of the trail on the downside of that 3% grade so it was a relatively easy ride so far. We sit on a bench and she asked if I can go back on my own to get my truck and pick her up. She seems a bit winded after going 4 miles. I then reminded her that I gave her the option to do half the distance. She then realizes we have to go back 4 miles, 2 of them uphill. She was not happy and she was suffering from bike seat butt.

After a 20 minute rest we got back on the trail heading back. She pretty much complained about the seat hurting, how long we had for the ride back and other related unhappiness the whole way back. At one point we even switched bikes because my BMW bike rides SOOOO much nicer then the Magna and she figured maybe it would be easier to ride. At one point she even pushed the bike 1/4 mile up the hill. We got to the last half mile to go which was a street crossing. She said she was done and didn't want to go another inch. It took her another 10 minutes to finally get going. While I was waiting, I took a picture of some old bikes that were sitting next to a tree at a house along the trail.

She finally made it to the end, dropped the tailgate to my truck and laid out. Since we were going so slow. I really didn't feel like I had any heavy riding where my heart rate was up or any real weight loss stuff happening. I wound up riding the other side of the trail another mile and back again at a high rate of speed for the burst. I got back, she was still laying on the back of the truck but was taking pictures of me as I rode up.

Overall, it was a good day for us. It wasn't the usual pace I ride at but we did it together and that's the most important thing. She rode an impressive 8 miles, with no previous riding this year, and I went 10. Now we've been home for a couple hours, she said if I get her a wider seat, she'll do it again with me. Sounds like a plan. Here are a couple pics of the trail, the General Store, and a few of me.

Today's ride was the first time I needed sunscreen all year. That alone makes it a good day.
Suited up in full team kit and headed to the Thrilla in Woodinvilla route. It's an 11-ish mile street or MUP ride to the trailhead. Then off onto the trail for a 20 mile mostly-off-road excursion. The trail was in great shape. Mostly dry with just a little bit of slick mud in the corners to keep things interesting. I was out for endurance rather than just jamming the entire thing, since I still had a 13 mile ride back home after the finish, so I wasn't riding on the edge of control as I do when I drive to the trail.
I didn't try to kill myself pushing 65 gear inches up the super steep sections either: True to CX form I jumped off and took the 24" gear to where it was reasonable to hop back on and start pedaling again. I'm bummed that I couldn't find my camera mounts, because it was a perfect day for it. Especially the narrow section when I brushed elbows with some friends who were out doing the loop in the reverse direction. They were ripping down a hill as I was hammering up it and we came around a blind turn at each other. No collisions, no skid-offs, and everyone just kept going... it helps that we all know each other off the trail, I'm thinking.
I finished up the trail section, and had a great ride back on the MUP with a guy riding a Salsa Vaya. We BS'd about different bikes, upcoming races, and I might even see him at some of the CX race series in the fall.

Nice pictures! And congratulations to your wife! Be careful though, a wider seat might not be the cure for her rear end issues. For me, the cure was a change in seat position (both aft and down) plus a narrower seat than what I started with.

I am trying to get my spouse riding with me more. It is nice to have the company even if there is considerable grousing.

53 miles yesterday in the local century ride.

Beautiful day for a ride and aside from one really obnoxious set of hills it was great. I'll be ready for those hills next year! This was the 3rd year riding this ride and each year I have riden further. 15k first year, 55k last year and 80k this year! It ws also my fastest ride ever as we averaged about 12 - 14mph for the ride.

This pic is of me and Lynnie about 7 miles into the ride. My son Jeff fired this off on his cell phone camera as he rode. Not the safest thing to do but, eh...

My friend Lynnie and I and her 2 kids and my oldest rode as a team this year for the local Bike shop. You need 5 to be a team and we had 5! Hopefully next year there will be a much bigger team as a lot of riders in this ride are customers of the the shop.

I was having a really bad day today. Probably the thing that set it off, aside from being a typical case of the "Mondays," was that I am having issues with refinancing my home. Mortgage lenders are a pain, but that is an entirely different topic. Fortunately, I think I found a mistake made by the bank which sets me back on track there, so anyway...

My general feeling today was tired, moody, cranky, bleh. After work, I went to the store to get some propane in one of my propane accessories. I came home and finished working on a friend's old mountain bike and started working on another bike and nearly got that one ready to go. If nothing else, I was productive, though still feeling in the doldrums. I barely was able to make myself fix dinner, but that ended up being pretty good. Despite being tired, I knew I had to go for a ride tonight and not just because it was required exercise.

I jumped on the single speed and down the street I went. It took a while for me to get in the groove. I was seriously starting to think I might be getting sick the way I felt today. Finally, got the old blood pumping and felt pretty good. My route was cutting through a couple neighborhoods, down a sidewalk, and into the MUP along the creek and through several parks. At the end of that path, I climb out from the creek bed up to street level where another sidewalk runs about a mile along a road and joins up with another path leading into and through a county park. It was getting dark, so I knew I didn't have time to ride all the way into the county park, so I was going to turn around when I got to the intersection with the path leading into the park.

About 1/8th of a mile from the intersection, I pass a guy going the other way on his old rigid mountain bike. By the time I got to the end of the path and turned around, he was a good 1/4 mile ahead. I decided I was going try and catch him on my SS townie. I started back down the hill and quickly spun out which was annoying (I need to change the gearing on this bike now that I am in better shape). Still, I was reeling him in and caught him right when I got back to the end of the path where it joins back up with the creek side path. He ended up splitting off another way, but when I got behind him, I noticed he was wearing a shirt that said "I'm Faster Than You!"

Today’s ride:

Rode with the Dick Davidson today, it was an excellent 62 + mile ride for me and 44 miles for Dick . I started at 5:30 this morning to get in some extra miles and possibly beat the rain that we were supposed to have today. I road about 18 miles before heading to the 436 trail head to meet with Dick Davidson at 7:00 AM. Our other riding partner Jim is off to North Carolina to ride the mountains for a month (lucky him). We did the normal ride to Panera Bread for breakfast and decided to ride through Heathrow and evaluate the weather to determine how far we would go. It was over cast but it didn’t look like rain so we decided to go all the way. It proved to be a good decision as it never rained a drop on us. It was a good ride today, and this is the highest mileage month that I have ever had.

I have reviewed my 2011 goal and reset my figures to 8,000 miles. I might have to re-evaluate that number again in September.
Ride statistics for: 06/28/2011
 Miles today: 62+
 Mileage this month May: 1039+
 Mileage this year: 5016 (62.7 % of my 2011 goal)
 Over/under riding days 2011 vs. 2010: +10
 Over/under riding days June 2011 vs. June 2010: +3
 Over/under miles 2011 vs. 2010: +1585 miles
 Average miles per ride this month: 51.9
 Average miles per ride this year: 42.1
 Number of rides over 50 miles this month/total ride days this mo. 13/20
 Metric Centuries this month: 5
 Miles needed to hit my 2011 goal of 8,000: 2983 miles, A 9/10 thousand mile year is not out of reach.
 I should reach my goal about mid October.

Tomorrow: Plan to ride weather permitting

Next ride: Wednesday

Today I found out the loop I have been doing around the neighborhood is not 5 miles but only 4 miles on the nose. Mapquest is not always correct I guess. The quick story:

I bought a wireless bike computer last fall and the shop I got it from said they had no one to install it that day, I would have to come back (25 minute ride in a car), and there would be a charge. The other guy at the shop I spoke with last time said anyone can install it at their place and it would be free of charge. I was a little mad. I took it home opened the package, read the instructions and put everything back in the box. Then it sat since last fall.

Jump ahead to today - I had off today and wanted to check out this LBS that was close to me and I figured I would bring the bike to them and have them install it. I would use this to gauge how I like the shop and the people. For $10, I had my $55 computer installed in no time flat and found a new shop to go to. Real nice group of guys and gals and then even encouraging hanging out and shooting the sh*t. My kinda joint.

So when I got home I was excited to try out the Computer and did the usual loop I thought was 4.8 miles according to mapquest. Turns out according to the new computer it's 4.00 exactly. So to double check to make sure it was calibrated properly and went on Mapmyride.com. They said 3.98 miles. Close enough to me. I also hit a max speed of 24.1mph which is kind of cool to know.

I think this is going to help me get out because now I want to watch the odometer go up with every ride. So thats my story from today.

did my first ever "group/shop" ride today.
https://www.mapmyride.com/workout/52680262

first off, i forgot to zero my computer, so i don't know what my pace was exactly.
secondly, i went with the "slow" group. slow must by 18+ mph average pace for the entire ride. i know i easily was doing 17+ for the entire ride...
but... at the first big hill (Cat5), i was feeling a little edgy/nervous/excited about being on my first group ride, and i didn't want to push it and blow chunks... so, was a steady 7-8mph up the hill.
i got dropped. and it took me 5 miles before i saw someone again, and they were about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile ahead of me, maybe more, i'm not good at judging that distance while doing 20+ mph.
my speedo was saying i was knocking it out on the flats and rolling hills, never getting out of the big ring (53), and hauling ass like i've never hauled. i was reeling them in, had to be doing a 22+ mph average after the hill. by the time we made it to this long steady incline, where they were about 1/2 mile ahead of me, i was spent.
the ONLY time i've ever pulled over to rest my HR.. it was over 190 and i could feel it, so i didn't push any more. once it was about to hit the 160s, i got back on and took it up the hill about 8mph, and then easily 15 mph clip the rest of the way.

so... i don't know if they forgot i was back there, cuz i remember them talking about who was 'taking' the slow group and the fast group. some of those roads are windy and hilly to start...
if i would've hammered up the hill at whatever pace they were doing, i know i could've stayed with them easily in a pace line until that last hill. i was catching them on my own...

left my bike at the shop to be serviced, so i'll talk to them and find out what the "pace" is suppose to be.

I didn't get to ride today, but I did spend some time hanging out at the bike shop for awhile. I also got to work on one of my bikes. I am hoping to get a ride in after work tomorrow. Ain't the longer days of summer great for the day shift? I won't complain about work since I am happy to have a job. I did have a really nice ride yesterday. I guess it was so nice because it was my last day on the afternoon shift. I will now have only two days a week that I will be free to ride in the morning before I have to go to work. I will also have a four day week-end every other week. I am a lucky guy.

I went to the park today to practice dismounts/remounts, and ran into some other CXers. We decided on a 3-lap friendly and I took a spill with one other guy on a gravel corner into a barricade run-over. I have a big bruise on my arm and some scuffs on my shin, and I have to adjust my brakes and true my rear wheel.

Did the 12 mile trail at Walnut Creek in 1:18. Not bad for me, but I have been faster. It was nice out, partly cloudy and 95F with a slight breeze.

I got home from work and my wife said to me "do you want to ride tonight?" - She has been riding her Magna MTB and was having some butt pain issues. I suggested we get a new seat and adjustment. Tonight I figured why doesn't she try out a whole different bike and ride the Specialized instead. She agreed. Different seat that is adjusted to level and its a better riding bike. We went around the neighborhood for a total of around 3.3 miles. We were moving at a slower pace for 30 minutes of ride time. She is still starting off so I told her don't worry about me and the fact I can ride longer, faster, etc as long as we are out that is what counts. She enjoyed this ride much more than the one we did over the weekend. She also said forget the Magna, she's taken over the Specialized Hardrock. Works for me! So I still might buy a new seat as the one on the Hardrock is rock hard. I'll then try different angles slight up or down and see if that makes a difference. This weekend we are going to do a 6-8 mile ride, depending on how the seat feels.

24 miles that prompted its own thread. First time I've felt like a "real" cyclist in a while.

Had a beautiful ride today of about 100 km through the countryside, rolling hills and farmland. Should have taken more water with me as it turned out to be hotter than I suspected it would. 35

I passed by one place and woke up 2 dogs who gave me some serious attention. They were a pair of good looking mutts but they were really ticked that I happen to ride by. Just doing their job I suppose.

I was afraid of one of them getting caught up in the spokes, chain or a truck/car coming by and clipping one of them so I had to un-clip and stop. As soon as I did, they stopped barking, put their teeth back in their holsters and turned around and trotted back to their home.

That was the only excitement and next time I have to to take a camera with me to capture some of the nice vistas.

It was a great ride, until a bee got trapped in an air vent and gave me a memorable moment.

It was not a pretty sight with me struggling to get the helmet off, stop the bike, dismount and get the bee out of my hair.

The 7 miles home, was slower, and I had a headache.

Really felt good today. Only did 5 miles but it included a little over a mile of 5% which I made with a little more dignity than I thought I would

Today’s ride:

Rode with the Dick Davidson again today, it was an excellent but warm ride. I did a 62 + mile ride and Dick had about 44 miles. I started at 5:30 this morning to get in some extra miles and possibly beat the heat that we were supposed to have today. I road about 17 miles before heading to the 436 trail head to meet with Dick Davidson at 7:00 AM. We did the normal ride to Panera Bread for breakfast and decided to ride through Heathrow to the horse farms. I had my Flying WV jersey on today and as we were having breakfast a young girl came over to our table and asked me if I was from West Virginia and I replied that I was. Turns out that her father was the WV Mountaineers football QB in the early 60s when I went to school up there. It is amazing how many people I meet when I wear the WV jersey. It’s a small world

26 hilly miles today on an out and back route at 15.1mph avg. When I was heading out (north), the flags were not pretty limp but at some point before I turned around, the wind kicked up. Ride back was straight into a nice headwind. temp was about 90F when I started and about 95 when I got done. I don't mind the heat, but usually the winds have died down by the end of June and it is just hot.

33 miles with Mr. Dan_W on the Holmes County Trail in Ohio. The paved trail runs through Ohio's Amish country. Highlight was wonderful meatball subs in Killbuck.

Yesterday evening was a new record for me... 30km biking along the coast of Athens!

While that might not sound like much, it's been only one month since I started biking again, and if someone told me a month ago that I'd be able to bike such a distance (without collapsing! ) I would totally refuse to believe it!

My motivation is a close childhood buddy, and of course reading your threads here at BF. The advice I've received and read here has been gold! Thank you!

Today’s ride:

Rode solo today with the exception of the 6 miles from the Sylvan Lake Trail Head to Panera Bread where I rode with a guy that lives in Maitland that I see and talk to on many rides. I started at 6:30 this morning to get in some miles and possibly beat the heat that we were supposed to have today. I did the normal ride to Panera Bread for breakfast and decided to ride through Heathrow to the horse farms. After the horse farms I road west on SR 46 to River Road where I turned north along the river. About a mile down the road I saw a dozen wild turkeys off to my right trying to find something to eat. As I stopped to watch them for a minute two deer walked out of the woods and looked me over pretty close then walked back into the area that they had just come from.

Ride statistics for: 07/03/2011

 Miles today: 53+
 Mileage this month May: 115+
 Mileage this year: 5194 (64.9% of my 2011 goal)
 Over/under riding days 2011 vs. 2010: +9
 Over/under riding days June 2011 vs. June 2010: 0
 Over/under miles 2011 vs. 2010: +1674 miles
 Average miles per ride this month: 57+
 Average miles per ride this year: 42.5 (best ever)
 Number of rides over 50 miles this month/total ride days this mo. 2/2
 Metric Centuries this month: 1
 Miles needed to hit my 2011 goal of 8,000: 2805 miles, a 9/10 thousand mile year is not out of reach.
 I should reach my goal about mid October.

Tomorrows plan: The Freewheelers are having a Forth of July picnic and ride in Mt. Dora, I might attend.

Had a nice 11 mile ride this morning with the wife, felt we could of gone a little futher. Was not real hot. We actaully seen a few people out in the bike paths we mix into our ride. My Trek 7300 rides better with the new seat post, but I need to get the seat teaked just right.
