According to ebay, the frame has been posted as shipped so hopefully I'll get a tracking number in the 3-5 days.
To be honest I have kind of mixed feelings on the whole thing. I understand the reasoning behind your purchasing, $330 vs $4K+ but I also have been on the opposite side of the deal where cheap copies were made of my companies product and sold putting our jobs on the block. Heck I owned a couple fake rolexs that I bought in China. I like the idea that you are leaving it nude and not putting on the Pinnarello graphics (that I know you can get). I think you're going to have a fine bike for the price and as long as you don't expect it to role like a Prince you'll be very happy with it.

I had some mix feelings too. Its part of what took me so long to actually make the purchase. From what I understand from others who have purchased this frame it should ride like a good carbon bike without some of the fine tuned feel of a $4,000 frame due to layup of the carbon.

I'd be interested in your experiences and impressions as you build up the frame and ride it.

It will be the first time a build one up myself. I expect that at some point in the process I'll be dropping it off at the shop to finish. But I could be wrong. Looks like I'll be selling my current bike for parts shortly. Only room for 1 road bike at a time at home.

Frame set arrived today 10 days day-to-day. On the good side it looks great. On the bad side they sent me a 3k finish frameset and mine was supposed to be 12k (it looks sweet). On the good side its the newer version that has a tapered headtube/headset and tapered fork and is slightly lighter. On the bad side they didn't include the headset, seat tube clamp or extra derailluer hanger that were supposed to be included in the purchase.

I think they sent me the wrong box and have emailed them about getting the extras sent but not switching the frame set. I may end up having to purchase a headset and seat clamp if I want to get this built up over the next couple weeks.

Here is a picture of the new frame:

It looks more stunning in person.

I dropped off the partially completed bike for the shop on Tuesday to finish the build for me. With my limited tool supply and lack of faith in my own ability to get this perfect on install I was able to install the brakes, derailuers, seat and seat post, handlebars, stem, and shifters. I left the press fit of the headset, cable install, Bottom bracket and crankest, and handlebar tape to the shop to do.I should have it back in 5-10 days depending on if the LBS owner is right or the mechanic is right on the repair back log.

Here is the truly final Final parts list after I parted out my old bike and swapped in a couple items from that and a couple last second deal/modifications in the list:

Frame: Chinerello Frame set ($330)
Fork: full carbon fork include w/ frame
headset: FSA CF33 ($49)
Compression plug: Black ops compression plug ($9.99)
Shifters: Dura ace 7801 10 speed ($120)
shifter/brake cables: Jagwire Cable set ($13.95)
seat post: FSA SL220 alloy ($17)
seat clamp: metal non name from parts box until new carbon one arrives ($0)
FD clamp: Token carbon cover ($15)
chain: Ultegra 10 speed from current bike ($0)
seat: Specialized Alias from current bike (0)
tires: Michelin ProRace on swapped in wheels ($0)
pedals:Speedplay light action from current bike ($0)
cassette: SRAM 1070 11-28 (from current bike)
bar tape: F.U.B.A.R. red carbon (4.99)
Brake set: Ultegra 6600 from current bike ($0)
Front DR: Dura ace 7800 braze on (6.50)
Rear DR: Ultegra 6600 from current bike ($0)
Handle bars: Deda Newton Compact - ($15)
Crankset; Truvativ Rouleur Carbon compact w/ BB ($55.12)
Rear wheel: H+Sons SL42 24h black iodized color built on a Reynolds rear hub ($187)
Front wheel: Reynold Alta Areorace from spare wheelset ($0)
Tires: Either Michelin Prorace 2s or Conti GP 4000 ($0) from current supply of tires

total cost so far: $870.03 ( $120.0 over budget)

Projected build weight: 7608 grams or 16.77 lbs

I'm hoping its done in time to take it with me next Wednesday when I head to Knoxville, TN for a job interview.

Slightly off topic, but for those of you who are located in Knoxville, who is a trustworthy Realtor to contact so that I can look at relocation options?

All of these things are pretty easy to do. The tools are pretty cheap as well. If you ever think you'll build another bike, it's worth spending the $30-40 to buy the necessary tools and learn to do it yourself. Plus, you don't have to wait 5-10 days for someone else to do the work. I don't think I could wait 10 days to ride a new frame!

Originally, was going to have them just do the headset and crankset work (would have cost me $30-$40 max). But I looked at my schedule and determined that not only was I not willing to spend money on more tools, I was also out of time given my up coming trip, 3 soccer games to coach in 5 days, and a list of lawn work that wasn't getting finished too. SO I gave into my anxiety and punted the build to the best mechanic within 50 miles of me. SHould cost me $80 to have it all finished, and I won't have to sweat it at all. Also, I'm hoping this is my last road bike for a while as its everything I want in a bike and also less than any bike I could ever afford with the same spec.

Seems silly to spend 10% of the bike cost to have a mechanic perform labor that even an inexperienced mechanic could do in a couple of hours with minimal additional tooling...

As an example, the integrated headset you've purchased should drop in without tools. Knocking the crown race on the fork requires $1 of PVC pipe plus a hammer or mallet and takes 2 minutes. If your fork has an aluminum steerer and requires a star-fangled nut, the nut setter costs $10 and the install takes less than 5 minutes. If you have to cut the steerer tube, you'll need a hacksaw and 10-15 minutes (2-3 minutes of actual cutting, the rest to stand around worrying that you're going to cut in the wrong place).

Installing the bottom bracket requires a $15-20 bottom bracket wrench and requires 5 minutes. Installing the crank requires a hex wrench, which you probably already own given that you've bolted all the other components on the bike, and takes another five minutes.

Installing the cables, adjusting brakes/derailleurs, and wrapping the bars are the most time consuming. If you have no idea what you're doing, you might manage to sink two hours here. If you have printed instructions for your components, and follow them, you can probably get the cables installed and adjust everything in less than an hour. I like to cut housing with a Dremel tool. If you don't own one, it's worth spending $15-20 on knock-off. I usually ride without bar tape for the first couple of rides, just to make sure the controls are in the right place. Once I'm ready to install the tape, a usable job takes 15-20 minutes. Perfection probably requires twice as much time, since I deal with tape pretty rarely.

Well I was able to pick up the bike at the end of August, just before moving to Logan OH. With the move and the new job its now got a whopping 12 miles on it. That said, I love the bike. Its smooth, and feels light (at 16.75 pds it better). I look forward to getting out more now that the job is getting settled down, and the unpacking in the new house has slowed. I think I will be swapping in a different seat post that has less set back and is lighter. I also think I will raise the stem 10 mm as well. I'm glad I spent the funds on the LBS build up as there were a couple of issues to deal with that he handled.
