Ooh ooh, tell us more about this supposed "date". Those of us who're old (or feel that way) and married have to live vicariously through you single youths.

What would you like to know?

She's going to meet me at my apartment at six, then we're heading out together. She isn't a cyclist, so this lets us share a car. We've got plans for Indian food, a quick stop at REI (we both need something there, and I just learned they have a 20 % off coupon, which expires this weekend), and then to have a bonfire on the beach at Golden Gardens. Like the folks below ... minus the alcohol.

Tomorrow I'm trying to get up into the mountains with my bike. I'm trying to get her to come with. It's probably not very romantic to say "Now I'm going off to climb these hills; you should wander around with your camera 'til I get back." But she's never been to Mt Rainier, and likes nature.

SF, I'm no expert on spoke count & rim strength vs rider weight, but considering you posted in the Clydes/Athena forums are you and/or LBS factoring that in? Wouldn't want you to spend $ on low spoke count, high $ wheelset if they end up popping
spokes on ya continously.

LBS invited me to come by before my date this afternoon, and borrow a set of Zipp 808 tubies, to see what carbon rims and alloy feel like, and also because I'll enjoy light wheels on my way up the mountain tomorrow. They said to bring them back next week.

I suppose this means I need to bring a six pack of good beer with me.

If your leaning towards zipps look at the max models.. 404 and 808's, they have a weight limit of 225 but have known riders up to 260 using them with no issues.. I raced on a set of 404 w/ ceramic bearings and they were the fastest wheels I ever used..

Good to know and thanks, Socalrider! I've heard that Zipps, while fast, also have a reputation for dampening road noise, and being pretty comfortable. Did you notice anything like that?

I'm not especially interested in Zipps, but LBS is having a 20 % off sale on the non-Firecrest ones, and has 1080 (I think?) front wheels pretty deeply discounted. So it's worth considering.

I have several sets of Zipp wheels, they handle the weight of me (220-240) on my single and my tandem with no problems. My tandem has custom drilled 32 hole rims though. I use them for long distance racing and they are very comfortable. Not as nice riding as my Topolinos but pretty good and much faster. The 404's are a great combination of being aero and not having to worry too much about cross winds. They are an awesome wheel set and amongst the fastest wheels out there.
