Well, had my first fall. It was inevitable at some point in time but thought it might be a little better then how this one went.

At work, we have many security entrances and exits into and out of the main parking lot. All of them have the security "arms" (or bars) for gates. They are also activated (the exits are at least) by weight and motion. Well, the weight sensor does not work for me but I 99% of the time can activate the motion so the arm goes up but ONLY if I hit the right area. The only issue is that there is a small delay so I cut the corner and sneak past the little opening in the arm. I have only misjudged it once..... but nothing happened.... until today!

As I was sneaking past it, my right bar hit the post and I could not recover and I went down.... on my left side. Luckily I was not going fast and luckily the pannier caught most of the blow. Scraped knee, elbow and hit the hip pretty hard.

I should have took a little more time to check everything out. As I was riding away, I noticed my air horn busted off so I had to stop and "fix" it. Noticed, only after I was too far away, that my mirror on my glasses was gone. I was pissed about that cause it took me FOREVER to dial it in. I got home and called the security post but they had no clue. I will look for it tomorrow morning.

Sooooo.... glad to get that out of the way!

Ouch. Hope you find the mirror. Those dang things are fussy.

I am often tearing through those posts they put at trail entrances to keep out motor vehicles. A few days ago I whacked my mirror on one of those posts. Almost lost my balance but managed to stay upright.

Sorry to hear about it, sounds like it was less painful than my fall last winter which is a good thing (not that it's a competition lol). I highly recommend "Duoderm" for road rash, you can get it from amazon. Tagaderm works too, but duoderm has the advantage of being able to "soak up" (that's not exactly what happens but close enough for now) the gunk that comes out where as tagaderm has it ooze out the sides eventually. You could think that nothing is coming out of the wound, but cover it with tagaderm and you'll find out real quick it's still oozing.

Listen to Will. I've already had a few goo leakage issues even with foam dressing on top as backup/padding.

Just think of it as badge of commitment. You'll be fine in another day or so. Just wait until you're rating them in terms of 'awesomeness'.

Any crash you can walk away from is a good crash. The day after is the worst. Heal up quick.

I've had two crashes in just under four years and both of them have been really, really lame. I manged to get a little road rash out of the second one, though, so I felt a little better about it. The guys at the LBS gave me a lot of back pats and congrats but I could tell they were just being nice. Sigh.

I agree it's just a matter of time. When someone tells me they want to take up cycling because they get injured too often running, I try to manage expectations by saying there are 2 types of cyclists: those who have crashed, and those who haven't crashed yet. Then I pontificate about the importance of bike handling, situational awareness and most importantly: luck!

But, in the case of car/bike crashes, there's often really nothing much the cyclist could have done to avoid it. It's pretty much all you can hope for to avoid the "when" for as long as possible, and to make it happen as infrequently as possible.

I had an open arm close on my helmet pretty hard. Don't have any idea why it closed, no one was around. A friend was riding behind me, he almost crashed from laughing.
