After the big rain storms last weekend, local parks were finally open. Alot of trail damage but it was beautiful to be out...about 20 1/2 miles, 2200' of climbing...






There is some singlettrack - about 5 miles total...

Took the family to the Texas Hill Country for Spring Break. Brought my bike along for a 47 mile ride with elevation. Nice change of pace from the flat lands of Houston.

Man, you west coast folks have some beautiful trails to ride. Mine is all heavy woods. Even on the road, I don't have 1/10th of the sky visible that you guys do. The coolest part of going on vacation down to South Carolina is how much sky I can see and not constantly being in the woods everywhere I go.

One week before the Houston - Austin MS 150, the "free" safety inspection discovers my ride is on its death bed and I need to start bike shopping ASAP. I'm not complaining that I finally got the upgrade I've been drooling over, but I'm a little concerned changing up my ride this late in the game. Training has been going really well. I hope the new geometry and saddle are forgiving. Anyway, here I am on my ride this weekend (first weekend all year I haven't been on the road!):

suck and awesome... what sort of things did they find to make your old bike on it's deathbed? I want to do the BP ms150 (or whatever they are calling it these days) at some point... had intended for it this year but this winter weather killed any training I needed :-/ maybe next year...

anyway... nice upgrade ... as for saddle... if you where happy with the old one on the last bike consider using it.

A list of easy fixes, true wheels, replace chain, replace rear brake cable and pads. But the biggie... the bottom bracket was going bad. The bike was over 10 years old. It sat in floodwaters for 2 days after Katrina. The bike shop could not get the BB to budge. It was seized in the frame. They even bought an impact wrench to muscle it out. No luck.

I probably could have ridden it, but the thought of having the BB go out while out on the road is not very appealing to me. I've been itching to upgrade my bike, but was hoping to put it off till later in the year. This was a justifiable excuse to drop the cash now.

Thanks. I couldn't get the old saddle to mount onto the new seat post. I may just swap out seat post and all for this ride. We'll see.

BTW - Re: BP MS150. I signed up with the Ready2Roll Training Series this year. It's a collection of companies that put it on, and you have to be employed by one of the member companies to join. It is very well organized and definitely worth signing up. This is the best shape I've been in for one of these long distance rides.

for the seat... ah different mounting design between posts I assume or is it the way the set up the front tension bolt? at least it's the common 27.2 post so swapping is easy

flood waters will do nasty things... you move to Katy after the hurricane then? what was the old bike?... anyway BIG upgrade... when I drop a bit more weight I've considered the Roubaix... enjoy it and enjoy the ride... I have plenty of friends who've done it and hear great things about it... maybe next year I'll manage to train decently over the winter, my aunt has MS and it's nasty stuff... she's now in an assisted living facility and has been for like 15 years now... used to be the most athletic person anyone knew... sadly MS hit her real hard

The new seat is the split design. One of the bolts is accessed from the top. Old seat is solid, so no access. The thought of swapping out the seat posts hadn't occurred to me until I started typing the response. I'm going to take it for a spin after work today to see how it feels.

I was transferred to Houston 2.5 years ago, but yes, flood waters, falling trees...very nasty things. If your power ever goes out for more than a week, take this word of advice: Duct tape for refrigerator/freezer closed and DO NOT open no matter what and just roll it out to the curb. Trust me on that.

Sorry... back to the bike(s). Old: 04 Specialized Allez Triple. New: 14 Specialized Roubaix SL4 Sport. I was really interested in the Secteur Expert Disc (w/full 105 component set up), but frankly I was lucky they even had a decent selection of large frame bikes at all for my immediate need. The Roubaix Sport has a Tiagra front derailleur.

I am fortunate to not have any personal experience with the disease. The ride raises a ton of money for research. That's a good thing, I guess.

Went out for a nice ride around Wolf Lake (both the Indiana and Illinois sides) earlier this morning. Thought I'd share a few pics...

City of Hammond build a new trail over the lake. It's about 1000' long. They did a nice job with it....

While taking a rest break, came upon these. I'm surprised mama and papa goose let me get as close as I did. Was about 3 feet away. Usually mama and papa are hissing and flapping their wings in order to scare you off.
