My Motivation Thread

Like many on here I have struggled for years to keep the weight off, I have only been under 200lbs twice since I was 18 that was in 2006 and 2010. I sat at home sick as a dog on NewYears day 2012 while family was out, I was depressed and again 248lbs and I swore i would get below 200 again, well it never happened, got down to 206 but that was it, I am now 218. I could wait until the new year but I'm starting today, my goal is 185lbs by June 17th, my birthday! I am using this thread as a weekly, or even daily journal. Weight will be updated once a week and will also update whenever there is a workout day and what I did.I have many reasons but I will be honest the two main ones are my kids and Strava...lol My eldest son is racing next year and I need to keep up. Second is Strava, I have a lot of top ten spots and some KOM's in my area and I want to improve all my times and the only way is to shed the weight! It's going to be a tough journey but I have had enough of not meeting my full potential on the bike, 2013 is the year!!

a follow up question - what are you going to do different, if anything, to get down to 185?

sounds like he is cranking it up a notch, staying diligent and determined, telling others is a known step to help one keep on routine because he no longers answers to just himself, he now kinda answers to us too. if he fails, he has to come here and explain to others.

thanks for sharing OP, it would be cool to be under 200, the lowest I ever got was 206 as well, back in 2006. my trainer said my ideal target in 196. but I don't ever want to be skinny, women have always called me a hunk, so I wouldn't want to lose my hunkiness but you inspire me

that's funny, this time of year I feel more motivated. I always had my most ambitious training in the winter months. once spring and summer comes I want to be lazy and hang out outdoors tanning by the pool or beach enjoying all my hard work during the fall and winter months. I think fall is hard cuz we all have to get back into gear with fall activities after summer relaxation, if you have kids you know what I mean. I work for a seasonal co. and the fall is our busy season. it takes a lot of determination to use my free time for training.

Four pounds is nothing. Water that will be gone in a week.

At -322 degrees F I'd probably stay indoors.

Last two days have been great, no riding outside but eating good, and riding rollers and trainer. I few of the guys and I are always trying to out duel each other on sprints and climbs, when it starts to get real hard on the trainer/rollers I just think of them going by me and I dig a little further. whatever it takes.

have you tried https://www.trainerroad.com/ $10 a month to use their software, month to month and need $65 in Garmin ANT+ devices to make it happen.

I would but I'm one of the few that doesn't have a credit card, I have a bunch of spine rivals DVDs and I use the rollers for spin training, 2x20's and watching tour stages on pvr.

What a rough week, my grandmother had a bad turn of health and passed away on Friday. She was a wonderful Grandma and I will miss her dearly, especially hard when she was my last Grandparent. Through it all I ate like a pig and put a few pounds on. Time to get serious, I started this thread with intentions of loosing weight and I've put 8lbs on! Not feeling to good about myself right now.

My condolences for your loss.

I think you are beating yourself up needlessly here. You went through a tough time as you watched your grandmother decline and pass. Even if turning to food isn't the right course of action to deal with grief, its not uncommon. And as you work through your loss you can begin to refocus on your diet and training.

Also, I think you are falling for the idea that the best is enemy of the good. You are not at the weight you want. But you also aren't starting over again from your high point. Even if you did regain every pound, you would still be a winner because A) you'd learned what you can do by weighing less, and B) you know how to lose your excess weight.

So I think you should cut yourself a break here. You are hanging tough under some hard knocks. That's what Clydesdales do.

There's no reason to feel bad about yourself. I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother, that can't be easy. Sometimes extreme stressors like that can drive us to "poor" decisions. However, you're still aware and in charge of your own life, and every day you are in a position to make the correct eating/bicycling choices: Look at this as a turning point, a place where you finally made the decision. Go day by day. Give your new lifestyle a name - do it in honor of your grandmother. I call my weight loss and health gains of the past year "The Healing Project". A couple of years from now, look back on this not-too-pleasant weekend, starting with the passing of someone you loved, as the turning point. In post 15 you stated that you are 26 pounds lighter than at the beginning of 2012, so this is just a temporary setback.

I am sorry to hear about your grandmother.

Your initial idea of using this thread as a journal is a good one. I keep a journal where I record my weight, how many calories I ate that day, what exercise I did, and assorted ramblings. I helps.

I also agree with Neil's and Tractorleg's thoughts.

Take care.

For me the trick is (and I am still working on this one) to not let food become the way to cope with great stress. My biggest slides this year have been when work went nuts. I got busy, and stressed, and just ate what I could find quickly. Every time I fell off for a few days, and started feeling fat again, it was always amazing to me how much better I would feel in a week if I would get back on the wagon.

If I could ever convince myself when I get stressed, is when I need to exercise more, I would finally be over this addiction...but I keep trying.

Hope you work though it soon.
