My first personal best

Hi all,
I know it's not much compared to what most of you guys can do, but this morning I achieved my first best personal 10 miles.
I started riding just over a week ago, and have been riding almost everyday for the last week, actually, I only took 1 day off; granted I don't ride long distances; usually 7 to 10 km rides...That was until today. I decided I'd give a shot at trying a different route. All I can say is that I have absolutely no regrets at trying !! It was a blast ! I surprised myself when I came up to the part I was anticipating a lot; thinking I wouldnt be able to complete the "climb"...well I did walk it...but only the last 10 meters or so. I man

aged to ride 17.54 kms in just under an hour...yeah I'm slow lol
Here's the link. I put my foot down at km 14, and walked about 10 meters...if even that.
I can honestly say that I cannot wait to go back and do more than I did today.

https://www.endomondo.com/workouts/235976984/114523

spet. 19th: new PR's for 1 hour ride, 10 miles and 20 kms !!

1 hour: 21.23 km
10 miles: 44min: 06s
20 kms: 56min:01s

Good job!

Everyone has to start somewhere. When I started on June 25 of this year it was a massive effort to do 5km for me. Now I'm doing ~30km rides regularly with my longest ride being 45km. Just keep at it on the bike and the distance and speed will come!

There's a fine line between having fun/challenging yourself and trying to do too much. Keep it fun/challenging and you'll do great!

I was really surprised how quickly I was able to add distance to my rides. I am 61 and until last month hadn't done any riding for many years. First ride was less than a mile. Now I can do 20 without any problem and have done 30. Where I live once I get away from our neighborhood it is either up hill or down. Hills are fun but I would like to try a nice long flat ride once. Keep having fun and you will feel better & better.

Thank you. Yeah, it used to be hard to ride 5 km when I got back on the saddle; being around 320# and false flat at best near home wasn't the easiest thing, but I stuck to it, and I'm glad I did.

Yeah, keeping it fun is the most important thing right now; well maybe right next to losing some weight lol...but riding is so much fun, I feel like a kid when I'm getting ready to go lol

I live on a small island, and there is no way I can go without hills, unless I ride a few loops of the same stretch of road around the harbour; anything else is just hills and false flats at best; and out of these 2; I find false flats to be the worst...I hate them, hills are challenging, but fun in a way

Ok call me a dummy but what is a "false flat" ?I always thought either it was a hill or it wasn't.

A false flat is probably what you've been calling a hill (texas joke)

false flats look flat but they're not... usually 1-2% incline or so, not enough to call a hill but enough to slow you down and irritate you.

Congratulations. Personal achievements are just that, specific to the individual, so no matter what the distance is be it 10, 20, 50, 100 or more, accomplishing it is just as sweet. Now it is time to set your sights on the next boundry to break.

Congrats.
And by the way you didn't "walk" any part of it. I like to refer to that activity as 'cross training'.

I just love to beat my last time! I think it's addicting.

Thanks ! Yeah, I'm aiming at 15 miles or so today. Shouldn't be hard to get there.

First, congratulations on your personal best. And please never compare yourself to anyone else. Compare yourself to you, and your past performances. We all had to start somewhere. The MOST important thing is that you're out there doing it. We are fortunate at to have a group of C/A's from SoCal that can get together and ride. Several of us just finished a 96 mile ride with 4,100 feet of climbing. I think it's safe to say that every one of us, at some point, was thrilled to have just finished a 10 mile ride. Hopefully our rides encourage others to set goals and work toward them in a realistic fashion. I know I'm encouraged and motivated by those who did the double-metric and those who do double centuries. Someday!

A false flat is one of those roads that you would swear is flat, but it's kicking your butt. You know you can normally hold (i.e.) 14 mph on the flats, but on this "flat" you can only maintain 11 and there's no wind. After a while, turn around and look behind you. It immediately becomes obvious why you're struggling. 10 Wheels pic shows it perfectly. If you're doing an out-and-back, at least you know your ride back will be awesome!

I figured I'd use this thread to post my progress...
So I just got back from riding...
Distance: 21.150 km
Time: 1h:06m:26s.
Avg spd: 19.1 km/h

https://www.endomondo.com/workouts/241278185/11452370

Did not beat my last (and 1st) PR for 10 miles, but managed to ride a greater distance. I did ride a bit slower this time though.
Tomorrow I should be taking it easy, I'll probably ride around 10 km or so, maybe less; I'll take it easy, I need to recover a bit, I haven't been getting much sleep in the last 10 days.
On another note, I placed an order for some riding pants today, Endura Singletrack II; does any of you have some experience with these pants ? It's getting colder here, and soon I'll have to ditch the shorts for some pants...

It's all up to you of course but when I would have trouble with a hill I would just stop and wait a minute or two. Then I'd go backwards about 3 feet (to make sure I covered the distance) and get back on the bike. It was my personal "middle finger" to the hill so it would know I was able to ride it no matter how long it took. Then the next time I'd try to make it past the previous stopping point, if even by a foot or so, before stopping.

Hey all
Took a ride this morning, just short of 23 km total, and got new PR's for 20 km, 10 miles AND 1 hour ride lol Feels awesome
I edited the first post to add the new PR's.
I felt like treating myself when I got back earlier...so I placed an order online for 2 pairs of Sugoi RS bibs, as well as a jersey and jacket from aero tech

Congrats on the new PR's! I hope you are keeping track elsewhere so that you can see your improvement over time. If it were me I would not edit a post, rather post a new one so that others can see your progress as well. Your success can be and probably is an inspiration to others. As your fitness improves it becomes much harder to keep improving but the effort is imho worth it.
