I have a trainer and a rather inexpensive one at that. I bought it in January of this year and it's the one thing I've bought which has contributed the most to the good year that I've had. I've used it throughout the year, especially on weeknights when I didn't want to go through the rigamarole of prepping to ride outside. I find that I focus well on there and get a hard workout, and I've used it for intervals quite a bit. Notwithstanding the weather as soon as daylight saving time ends that trainer is my winter riding plan for weeknights, and outside whenever I can on weekends.

As long as there is no snow and ice on the local roads I will be out riding on the weekends. During the week I will do LBS spin classes on Tuesday and Thursday and add in Sufferfest videos on other days. Once riding outside is too hazardous I'll be doing Sufferfest on weekends as well. Since I also started running some winter days running may replace cycling or spinning on the trainer during the week. My plan after CX season is to not just stay in shape but improve. I will take part in the Tour of Sufferlandria in late January and early February, 9 days of Sufferfest in a row at suggested intensity. I am also flirting with the idea of going for Knighthood in early April to raise money for my Tour de Cure effort, we will see.

Anybody have any issues with wearing tires out on a trainer?

A 700x23 trainer tire is like $29 on Amazon......I'm thinking other than the hassle putting it on and off before the weather REALLY bites it is almost a no brainier to use one on the rear ?? I would think even on rollers the most wear would be on the rear tire ??
My new bike comes with Vera Helios 700x28 tires which are probably not any super duper tire ?

However.... and the reason I'm asking.... is that I really like the gatorskins on my hybrid and I'll be using it for the trainer as well.
I will look up trainer tires on Amazon, didn't know they had such a thing. Thanks @Willbird .

I may just leave the stock tires on my road bike just to wear them out on purpose so I can get a new set come Spring. If there is any life in them I'll keep using for trainer until they are cooked then switch to what was the front tire. Maybe the stock tires can be my "trainer tires".

I think my hybrid is going to get at least one carbide studded tire (rear) so it will not be allowed on the rollers :-).

Next questions... the skewer... noticed there are trainer versions of this. I didn't use a trainer version last year. It appears there are stresses on the skewers from being hooked into a trainer. Any insight into this?

Yes, the tires wear out pretty fast on the trainer. After I changed the tire that I had worn, I reduced the tension on that the trainer puts on the tire and used the gears of the bike to adjust resistance. I have tires on that bike which I wouldn't use on the road so that bike is now dedicated to the trainer. Since I only have two bikes I think that means I need a new bike to ride around, but my wife thinks the one I have is enough.

I hadn't considered the skewer but it seems possible that the trainer stresses it more. I'll look at mine when I get home.

I actually remember that mine came with one last year and I put it on. It is steel versus the typical aluminum. Not sure what typically happens when the aluminum one stays on.

Alright I just came back from the bike store, where I spent over $400. I got a trainer tire (tyre?), block for my front wheel, a beefier rim to put my actual tyre (tire?) on (put trainer tire on my current stock rim) and bought a maint plan that made sense for the activities that I already have them do.

Tire wear, oh heck yeah, it is even putting the hurt on a Marathon +...
But I don't mind wearing out, but after that I'll use my old fast bike on the trainer...
Don't think I can bust a wheel on a trainer...??? Or can you?
