What kind of shoes do you commute in?

I just picked up a NOS pair of Shimano SH-FN51 shoes on eBay and I'm in love!

It's too bad Shimano discontinued these; they are the most comfy cycling shoes I have ever experienced in over 45 years of riding. Yes, they are intended for indoor spinning but for my commuting and weekend rides up and down the SoCal coast they are perfect. Too much ventilation for cold or wet weather, but I won't ride when it's crummy out so that's not an issue.

LOVE the BOA system...

Whatever I feel like wearing since I use platform pedals for commuting.

lost_in_endicot 04-01-15 04:43 PM

Sneakers. I also have platforms, but with half clips.

I have some Scott road shoes I use with SPD-SL pedals. I'll be going to XT spd pedals soon and some Cannondale MTB shoes instead.

essiemyra 04-01-15 05:44 PM

In the winter mostly winter boots, the rest of the year leather sneakers.

Hub Spanner 04-01-15 05:57 PM

I commute in regular work shoes/street shoes. MKS Sylvan Touring pedals, no clips.

Commuting foot ware-
temp above freezing - prefer Chrome Kursk
below freezing - LLBean Snow Sneakers

looking for a new above freezing shoe, I wear a size 14 or 15 (depending upon shoe), Chrome stopped making 14s. - boo Chrome.

I use some worn out Shimano mountain bike shoes that have been modified for a semi-midfoot cleat position. Prior to that, it was the orange pair of shoes from the Shimano Click'R series. Whatever floats your boat, man.

Varies day to day. Sperry Topsider or Loake on most days. Also have some Hugo Boss pull on sneakers that I like and are really comfortable.

Redhatter 04-02-15 12:32 AM

I've got two pairs of pull-on steel-cap boots, one pair are elastic-sided the other come up my calf somewhat.

The latter pair I ride when I'm on the mountain bike since I can tuck my trouser/overalls leg down them to prevent the front sprocket from having a munch. (The other bikes have a guard to stop that.)

Adidas Nordic Walking shoes ... waterproof an Gore-tex lined.

Bought than for €50 for a month-long trekking trip in SE Asia. Gotten about 500 commutes out of them in addition

:)

Whatever mountain bike SPDs I got on sale when my last pair wore out. Currently a pair of Settes that I think I got for $30. I've been wearing them every day summer and winter for at least 5 years now. The velcro is getting a bit weak but apart from that they don't appear to have worn any. They're perfectly comfortable to wear just walking around.

Whatever shoes I'm wearing. Plastic pedals with roomy plastic clips and nylon straps, not very tight (I tighten them down occasionally... doesn't matter much).

Marinoni86 04-02-15 08:51 AM

Specialized xc shoes paired with crank brothers eggbeaters.

cobrabyte 04-02-15 09:09 AM

Dr. Marten boots most days. Sometimes Asics or Converse All Star sneakers.

12strings 04-02-15 09:17 AM

I use shimano shmt-43 (they look like grey hiking shoes, but have spd cleats). I use them with pedals that have spd on one side, and platform on the other...so I can use flat shoes if I want to.

rmfnla 04-02-15 11:36 AM

Yeah, I use eggbeaters as well.

Wow, lots of street shoes in use...

Converse are my favorite -- I just feel so nimble? I use toe clips, and the shoes change with the season:
Converse when it's warm enough for me to bike in shorts
slip-on Keds when it's warm-ish, but I'm still wearing leggings (makes changing at work easier)
LL Bean Bean Boots between 40 and 5 degrees
and Gore-Tex LaCrosse winter boots (that effectively look like Bean Boots) between 5 and -35
I won't ride below that...

Basically, I prefer shoes with rounded toes that fit nice in my toe clips and that I owned before I started riding/didn't have to buy anew...

scroca 04-02-15 11:40 AM

Sandals, unless it's too cold, then big, warm boots.

snow_echo_NY 04-02-15 11:46 AM

also whatever i'm wearing, usually trainers~

SouthFLpix 04-02-15 11:56 AM

This year I left my SPDs behind and switched to platforms and whatever normal shoes I happen to be wearing.

Andy_K 04-02-15 11:57 AM

Today it was these:

but only because I just put new cleats on them and need to break them in before taking them off-road.

Normally I wear Pearl Izumi All-Road shoes.

I have MKS touring pedals and large MKS cages, and large feet. In non-rainy days, slip on Vans. On rain days, Tretorn rain boots.
