On my bikes with racks I rack my back pack. On my roadie I wear it for my 50min commute. I found if I leave the straps loose and let the pack rest on my lower back it's not so hot as the air gets to my upper back.

Usually I just rock a little camelbak w/o bladder. It holds all my tools, spare tubes, and pump. Sometimes it even holds a change of clothes. Sure my back gets sweaty. But...my everything is usually sweat-drenched after a few miles in the NC summer.
Days when I need to haul a bunch of stuff, I use my huge chrome bag. It holds the camelbak bag mentioned above, my laptop for work, and even a couple tall boys. I find both of these bags comfortable.

I ride with a backpack often. Do my commute with a backpack filled with my clothes, lunch, and sometimes even a laptop. Have done up to 80 miles with a backpack.
I find the key is to get a pack that adjusts so that it just rests in the small of your back when you're riding - that way you don't even notice the weight.

My Arkel pannier has straps to turn into a backpack once I've parked. Best of both worlds.

Do a 30-35 mi RT commute with backpack, even in the 90F range. Doesn't bother me much but I guess it would lots of people. It has a chest strap that helps keep it fixed and it is pretty light. I think you can either deal with it or you can't, no judgment. It is a Mission Workshop.

I cheat. My knapsack goes in the milk crate that's on my bike. When I get to where I'm going, I lock my bike up, nab my knapsack and off I go. If you want to wear your pack and ride, it's going to be a matter of adjusting it till you find that "sweet spot".

Went to the dark side on Saturday. Picked up a Chrome Yalta Night from the hub in Chicago. Yalta Night Rolltop Backpack | Yalta Night Bag | Chrome Industries Packed everything that was in my Metropolis, plus the Metropolis inside of it. All of it fit with plenty of room. My back was already warm from the riding I had done around the city before I got there. When I left, I threw the Yalta on and rode some more. When I got back to my sisters place, my back was noticeably not as sweaty. We will see how it goes over the summer when it gets a lot warmer.

I'm with ya jade408. Even for something short like 3 miles I do not enjoy a backpack
