Time warp

Since I've been commuting by bike, my physical condition has improved tremendously and it shows.
(Hurrah for me!) Not that I'm anything special, mind you, (exercise won't make me tall, dark OR handsome) but it seems an invisible knife has trimmed away most of that excess flubber.

So now, I often get mistaken for someone 10, 15 or 20 years younger (especially when I'm riding a bike.) Of course, if I didn't shave, my grey beard would give me away...

At first, I couldn't figure this out. But as I thought about it and observed people around me, I noticed that as people get older, they tend to put on more and more excess baggage. I looked again at my waistline (much thinner now than 10 years ago--I've seen the pictures) and realized that it was uncommon for someone 42 years of age to be so thin. Fattening up seems to be normal for many people as they age.

I guess I don't mind looking younger than I am. The "time warp" isn't such a bad thing, after all.

LittleBigMan,
Congratulations! Stick with it.
I know what you mean...we have a 65 year old on our racing team and you would swear that he looks 25 if you are riding behind him (he dyes his hair) and some of us do - he is FAST!!!

For me it isn't so good. Ever since my exam last November till the end of this semester, I have never touched my bike or exercised in the minimum way. Just now I went for a ride that used to be easy for myself but ended up almost deoxygenated.

Got to work harder, and congrats to you!

Years ago as I rolled into my driveway I passed my wife and an new lady neighbor she was chatting with. Later, with a strained laugh, the wife said, "After you went by she said, "I see your SON likes cycling." Now we both color our hair to match the age we feel.

I am also 42, and yesterday I went through my pile of "too small" pants that I built in the closet a year or so ago. I'm *easily* back in to all but 2 of them, and when I put them in there, they weren't just tight, they were impossible to close up.

There's still an extra 3 inches on my waist, and it's stubborn. I'm going to have to phase out soda pop to lose it. That's pretty tough though, I am used to working like a hummingbird high on sugar and caffeine.

In my family it seems people get overweight as they get older. I'm glad to hear that it's not inevitable that I will become fat just because I'm older. It is kinda sad in our society how as you get older you automatically (it seems) get fatter. I just got back from Costa Rica and found that isn't the case everywhere. Congrats LittleBigMan!

Ok, we have to stop resurrecting these old threads. This one is 3-1/2 years old.

Now, back to the original topic.
I've been told by many other people (cyclists and non-cyclists) that I look 40-45 years old (I love those people). I'm really 61, but don't tell anyone.
I'm also in much better shape than any of my kids.

The same name keeps coming up in these old threads (as the resurrector). Apparently someone has nothing much to do during the day.
