Looking for an affordable, decently sized messenger bag

99% of the time I'd just get a rear rack and some panniers, but at the moment I don't have a lot of money to throw around and I just need something to hold my lock and small groceries during the summer, since my roommate has a car and I can get a ride from him pretty much whenever it's necessary.

So, any recommendations for an affordable messenger bag that won't constantly be slipping around to my front or banging into stuff? I've tried the backpack route, but that got uncomfortable pretty quick. Thanks in advance!

PS: Also, if it's on amazon that's even better! I've got a $30 giftcard burning a hole in my virtual pocket.

Any real mess bag(Timbuk2,Chrome,Baileyworks,etc) will have a strap system that will keep them in place when riding. If you're looking for cheap,eBay is your best bet, followed by Googling to find outlet sites.

Unfortunately I really can't afford something like a timbuk2, but I did find this guy on amazon and picked it up, looks like it should do the job: Amazon.com: Sling Body Shoulder Strap Bag Backpack Navy Digital Camo ACU: Clothing

I have Timbuk2 large messenger bag. Tough and comfortable.

The one place not to go cheap is on a quality messenger bag.

Messenger Bags & Laptop Bags | Footwear & Apparel | Chrome Industries and shop the sale section. I understand that you don't want to spend a lot of money on a bag, but that $24.99 one on Amazon won't last just based on build quality.

Crank Brothers Bicycle Messenger Bag - Save 79%

Chrome Ind bags are horrendously expensive. The above bag is excellent build quality, huge and a really good price right now. I have one I'm ready to return...found out that messenger bags aren't for me. The above bag retailed originally for around $110.

Check the thrift stores. You may or may not find actual messenger bags, but you will find options and discover something that will work for you.

Check out closeout bags from Jandd. I bought a "color blemish" Iniki about ten years ago and recently replaced the strap's pad and some of the plastic buckles. It's never leaked in the rain. I figure it cost me something like $5 per year, which is amazing. The green & bone color is a pretty good match to my muted personality, too.

I saw what might have been a chrome bag at a thrift store, not sure, it was a messenger bag with a seat belt buckle, but it wasn't what I was looking for at the time. Naturally now that I want to give one a try.....no dice other than a small lavender Timbuk2.

Did you check eBay? First page of the search results:
$16.50+ship
$30+ship

Lots of other great deals if you aren't super picky about color.

That bag appears to be tiny. I bet that I couldn't fit the stuff that I commute with in there. Like a bike, get something that will last. Buy once, cry once. I bought a Chrome bag, used off of a forum for a pretty good deal. I liked it so much due to the quality that I became a customer of theirs for life, buying two more bags, one messenger, one roll top. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely. Every person that I have turned on to them has been extremely satisfied with the quality of all of their items, from clothing to bags.

Check out Timbuk2 on Amazon. I don't know how big you need, but they have 2013 and 2014 models still for sale for less than their 2015 line. I just bought a large 2014 model for like 80. The 2013 models were even less but they were out of larges. They are also all Prime eligible so free shipping if you have prime!

It is a large bag. It's about 1.5-1.75x the size of my med Timbuk2. I usually carry a full change of clothes, coffee, soymilk shake, lunch, sometimes shoes, and a book with me to work...I usually fill up my Marmot Ultra 1350cu in day pack but the same load doesn't even fill up half of the CB messenger bag.
