I found a quarter a couple of days ago. It's a little beat up as though it was run over a few times.
Edger blades, always edger blades. The lawn maintenance guys around here carry them on pegs welded onto their trailers, and they just distribute them all over. Saturday I saw a mangled valve cover off a straight 6 (judging by the length), yesterday I saw 2 spark plugs (which was weird since they were several miles apart on different roads), and then there was the head gasket I saw by the side of the road...
A surprising number of latex gloves; they're all up and down the highway, it's weird.
i was heading up the mountain and pulled off in a dirt pull out area to raise my seat a tad. right there in the dirt was a mini multi tool. Even has a little flashlight on it. :)
This morning I saw an un-opened can of Vienna sausages in the middle of a 4-way intersection.
Not quite 'on the road' as much as 'in the trash' as part of my route this morning was trash day.
Two toilets, somebody's doing some renovation. I had just been working on my toilets the day before, and noticed a handle had a corroded lever, so I grabbed the lever off one of the toilets. I would have taken a flush valve too, but I would have had to have tools and time to get the tank off the bowl to get it off. |
I found a nice pair of Ray-Ban polarized sunglasses. Also some random cash here and there.
This week, a smallish (young?) barn owl, a sparrow, and either a large crow or small raven, couldn't tell. I've seen little dead bats a couple of times too, but this seems to be bird week.
I didn't find what I spotted ON the ground, per say. I saw DEER on a LAWN!!! A whole LOTTA deer. And a group of 3 young bucks on someone's lawn stood there, contemplating if it was worth their while to stop eating a households bushes & plants and ram the *CARP* out of me,... I believe I may have been quite lucky the other day. And, I see deer every ride. Where I just relocated to these suckers are all over the place. :thumb:

Last week I spotted a folded up US $1 bill in the bicycle lane.
Ones I found a couple trying to making up inside the trees hahah they didn't have much luck
I found about 2 dozen unused bottle rockets on the bike path yesterday. I left them there for someone else to enjoy.

Yesterday, we saw a chipmunk eating road kill, some flattened rodent. I looked up the diet of chipmunks, and it doesn't include meat.

you should have jammed them into your bar ends and lit them for a bit of a performance increase.

I used to work 4pm to 12am. Used to find lots of stuff. Now that I work 9am - 5pm,
not so much. I guess other riders see the stuff before I do. Found 3 wallets and a cellphone over the years. Was able to return all of them to their owners. One wallet was from a guy visiting from San Francisco. I took US$5 from his wallet and mailed it the address on his driver's license. Next time he was in New York; he treated me for lunch. 2nd wallet I found; hand delivered it to the guy's home address on his ID. Me: "Here's your wallet; I found it on my way to work this morning.". Other guy: "Oh okay." Closes the front door. 3rd wallet I found; dropped it off at the local police station. Got a thank you card from the owner a few days later, with a US$100 Target gift card. It was tricky finding the owner of the Blackberry cellphone. I called a few numbers from her contact and asked do you know anybody with a Blackberry? Got nowhere in the beginning. Eventually was able to schedule a meeting w/ the owner. She came with a box of chocolates. Some things I wasn't able to return to their owners; Snap-on ratchet(looks like it got run over a few times), umbrella(full size), few bike lights, etc. |
1nterceptor's comment reminded me of when I found a passport on the way home from the beach. I snagged it and my wife and I did out best creeping until we found him on the internet (through facebook if I recall correctly). We eventually reunited it with the owner and the advice to get a different government issues photo ID (ie. non DL ID).

That's good to know. I will try to remember to add a little handwritten card like "If found, please keep any cash, and drop off at any US Post Office -- they will return it for free!" I generally carry hardly any cash, in fact don't generally even have my wallet in my pocket. I've had the same $5 bill in my wallet for I don't know how many weeks. At a restaurant yesterday a friend gave me two more $5 to (over)pay for his beer, so now that's $15 that will be sitting there for probably a month.

Chipmunks are omnivorous according to some; but then again there are stories of wildlife Alligators living in NYC sewer system, so it doesn't surprise me either way,
