My old commute looked like a crime movie: panties, needles and condoms...routinely....Now, it is caps, hard hats, gloves, and paperbacks. Once in a while I find a phone.

FREE sign with a nice dish drainer rack and a 26" quick release hub with a gumwall 26x1.95" tire, decent tread, fix the flat, swap out the axle and BINGO, beautiful new rim and tire!
|
Knife. Brand new bucket. Brand new tie straps. Feather. Panties (used).

I found water on the road on my way home last night. It wasn't supposed to rain, but it did.
|
Over the years, I've found everything from bags of drugs, to money, to dead cats. Even found a loose diamond once
|
Last week I found an aerial dogfight. Well, birdfight; a pair of white-tailed kites was harassing a pair of invading turkey vultures; the kites chased off the vultures like a yappy dog chasing off a St. Bernard. It was so exciting I stopped to watch; the only thing missing was popcorn.

Found an unopened DVD yesterday

I saw another dead rat today, right in the middle of the bike path. Better dead than alive. I wonder what killed it.

Recently, a goose. Sitting down. Luckily somewhat safe from cars.
Thought the animal was injured but didn’t notice anything wrong. Was too afraid to look closer because then I might have scared it away towards the nearby cars. (Was a lot of traffic that moment.) Was a hot day. Maybe the goose was just taking a breather. Next day no sign of the goose. Hope allright. Must be. Love animals. |

A stack of plastic pots. About a dozen or so. 1 gallon variety. A little further down the road I saw a single stack of roofing tiles. Still in the wrappings.

I've seen a couple of damaged USB charging labels lately

26 x 1.95" rim and good gumwall tire, quick release axle. Can be swapped for a regular axle and the tire is already in use to replace a warn one.

saw a cartoon flat racoon cpl days ago. poor thing must have been looking at the tire right before it happened

About 20 VHS tapes on the side of the road today.

Yesterday was practically a gold mine going home on the highway. First was the old style bottle opener with the pointy end sticking up; stopped and threw it well into the grass. Then the busted -- side light? The plastic was clear, and I kicked that off the shoulder. Then the nice 13mm combo crescent/box wrench; finally something useful! It's at home. The large piece of painted foam I also kicked to the edge of the shoulder, but the piece of car body wasn't technically in anybody's way, so I left it. I didn't mind stopping so often, as it gave me a break from the headwind.
This morning it was a smallish skunk on the street; looked like the poor thing was running for safety when a careless human did 'im in. RIP skunk. |
Okay, not exactly on the side of the road the way the title implies, but it is next to the road outside my job, and it's bicycle related. I'm assuming it's a BSO.

A shoe.
The amazing thing is that it's mine; lost it Wednesday morning. Tried looking for it over the next 3 trips, but didn't see it. Then this morning, saw it sitting there. In the street, but by the curb. Other than some tree pollen, just fine. Bought a better pannier, should arrive tonight. |
Needles. Oh goodness, the needles. (We have a heroin problem in my town.)
My husband finds better things than I do. Among his excellent scores: a paramedic knife, a (working) pedometer, a Happy Birthday Girl sash with pink sequins. We have put all of them to good use. |
Found a 15" long 13/16" auger bit in the middle of the road yesterday morning. Safe now in my tool bin.

Crow bar right in the path of my bike commute, dangerous.
A few hundred 1" self taping wood screws must have fallen out of a contractors truck a few days ago and scattered themselves all along a 25yard stretch of the bike lane. I ride the sidewalk that stretch of my commute now and have been stopping a few minutes everyday picking up a couple handfulls of screws as cars wiz by at 50 mph. Reminds me of the time 10 years ago met up with a friend at Justin Herman plaza (the meeting spot for the start of each sf critical mass) and someone who was not a fan of cmass had strewn hundreds of thumbtacks all around the plaza. Lots of people had flats as a result, I helped a few people patch their tubes, but it took me so much time that we didn't go on the ride. |
This morning I found a Rema Tip Top 585 'seal inserting tool'. When I get a chance to google it, I can see that this one has the tip broken off. It looks like an awl with the point folded over, but it's supposed to look like this:
