What have you found on the ground while riding?

I still think that "found" on the ground while riding implies that it is something that you could pick up and take with you if you chose to do so. I've "seen" lots of weird things of the ground while riding but that doesn't mean I "found" them because I wouldn't or couldn't take them with me (and when riding a bike with an empty cargo trailer that can haul up to 300 pounds there is a lot I "could" take but still wouldn't).

I found a
dead cat this week by
the side of the road. I stopped to see if he had a collar with id on him so that I might be able to find his owner. Of course he didn't . Some people should be banned for life from having a animal.

I got a nice red collar for my black and white cat, very stylish, with ID tag and everything. Took him an hour to lose it. We looked and looked, and never did find it. After the second one, we stopped trying. Now, he's 13 and more interested in sleeping in the sun than exploring the neighbor's yard.

Speaking of cats, last week was not a good week. Found a freshly killed little black one on the highway on-ramp between the lane and the shoulder. It was still dark and I didn't want to chance moving it. I've always been squeamish anyway. On the way home I discovered a little grey and white that had been road pizza'd into the rumble strip. Can't quite figure that one out; someone probably hit it by mistake, but what about subsequent drivers? Are a lot of them driving on the strip? Do they particularly want blood and guts on their car and go out of their way to flatten it? Maybe it was on purpose, because the little skunk elsewhere on the highway is still intact(ish) on the strip. One of life's little mysteries, I guess.

I moved a freshly killed cat out of the way one my way to work once. It was in the right tire track and still limber but without a tag or collar. I put him by a treee at the side of the road and went on my way a little sadder. And spent some extra time with my cats when I got home.

I might have mentioned it in this thread before, but I once found a coyote with something in its mouth, I spooked him so he dropped it and ran, turns out it was the front half of a cat.

I agree/disagree. Once the items in the bag were identified he should NOT have taken possession of the bag. And he should NOT have taken it home to dispose of. What he should have done was once he realized what was in the bag was to drop it, and call either 911 or the non-emergency number and reported it to the police.
Had he taken possession of the bag to dispose of, and is while either on his way home or while looking for a dumpster he is pulled over by an overzealous LEO how likely do you think it is that he'd be able to explain that the bag wasn't his and that he was "just" looking for someplace to dispose of it?
It would have been better to call either 911 or the non-emergency number report it, and inform them that he would remain on the scene to "secure" it as it were.

I've moved a dead cat in the road to the boulevard and checked for tags. It's what I would hope somebody would do if it were my cat. A dead cat without a collar or tags could be a stray or maybe they just slipped out of their collar. Mine has done that so I cut people slack on condemning them for it. Once on the other side of my block I found a dead cat in the gutter and left it up on the sidewalk until the afternoon. Then I went and got it and buried it in my front yard. I hate to see animals that could be somebody's pets be left out like garbage.

reminds me, when I was a young teen, our paper boy came to our door to tell me that he saw a cat by the side of the road & it looked like it was hit by a car & he thought it was ours. I went out & found our cat sitting calmly by the side of the road on some grass with some blood coming from it's nose. it recovered & seemed fine but had kind of a nasally sound while breathing for a long time after that. it lived a long happy life after that

First day of school (last week) I found 8 or nine used syringes on the mup outside the gate to a Midfle School I ride by. I turned around, picked em up and walked my bike onto campus. I was hoping for an adult who could direct me to the nurse or whoever might help me dispose of them properly. The security guard wanted nothing to do with them. "I'm not touching those things" eventually, I got her to radio someone to help and she agreed to stand near them where I put them on the ground so the kids wouldn't mess with them.

Found this, rode by it twice. Must have been dropped by a cyclist. Hope he/she sees it.

I found a dirty, wet, but functioning Knog Four Eyes the side of the road. Yes, I took it. It was missing its strap so I had to buy another one. It's pretty flimsy, so I'll probably lose it myself soon for another cyclist to find.

Ehh, it might be more of a game. Take off your shoe/pacifier and throw it somewhere. Ask me how I know (hint: quickly learned to engage the power-window lock function in all cars).

It still does, and I think being able to recharge is great, but the battery life is very "meh". Don't know if it's just old or what. I have a PlanetBike Superflash and while it's bigger and not as slick, it runs forever on a single AAA battery. And guess what, if I run out I can replace it.

Today, a medium sized, filthy Bell saddle bag right in the middle of the MUP. I opened it to find several plastic blue sticks... not Park tire levers but disposable shavers, and under those a well-used glass pipe. I threw it into the bushes rather than explore any further.
So, if I'm underwhelmed by a road find, it gets properly thrown away.
If I never pick it up, then I never really threw it out.

I don't like batteries as they're environmentally unfriendly and quite expensive and have a ****ty form factor (make devices bigger than they need to be), but I can see the advantage if you have a longer commute or forget to charge the light.

Another dead rat today. They are so disgusting. Why do they die right on the bike path?

Heh. I haven't heard of deer in Manhattan, but there was a coyote sighting a year ago, so who knows.
Today I thought I saw another dead rat, but it turned out to be a grey sock.

I was riding a dirt trail and I came across a old dirty wallet. It had an ID in it and $150.00. I ended up driving 10 miles out of my way to stop at the dudes house. He wasn't home so I was going to drop it into the mailbox. When I opened the mailbox I saw the top letter of mail and the name was not the same. I didn't want to dig through the mail and verify it was/was not a new owner. I dropped in the wallet thinking that I did my best to return it and now it was either home or someone else got a windfall. Karma worked out good because shortly after that I found a great vintage bike that I was able to get for $100 less than they wanted and well within the price I was willing to pay.

Stopped and went back to look at a strap I thought might have been a head lamp. Nope! Butt floss.
