I think it's safe to say trailmix has not only won this thread, but all subsequent threads involving weird road finds.
I don't come across much. A 2-pound bag of rubber bands, unopened, and a remote control for a concrete truck are the best finds so far. On a more positive note, I did find 57 pennies and a nickel in the road yesterday. |

This morning I looked over and saw a glass of milk sitting on the sidewalk. There was nobody to be seen within blocks. Just a lonely glass of milk.

I once found a handgun in the street on my commute in a pretty safe area of town. Called the police non-emergency number to have them send a patrol car to bag it in case it was reported missing or had been used in a crime. Never found anything worth keeping like tools or cash, though. Going to keep my eyes open after reading this thread!

Yesterday on my return city commute, I found an 18v Bosch impact screwdriver. It was obviously kicked to the side by a car tire and the battery was cracked, but it still worked. It got me to wondering. As cyclists, we have a pretty good view of the road, I'll bet people have found some interesting things lying in the street.
What are some of the things you have found while riding? |
Monday morning I saw a nice Mechanix work glove on the side of the road (same as I had seen for sale at my local auto parts store a few days previous). I kept my eye out for the second, but didn't see it. Tuesday I saw the other glove first, picked it up along with its mate, apart from sitting in the rain on the side of the road, they're brand new! Just rinsed them out, let them dry, and I've got new winter gloves.
This morning I passed a combo wrench (didn't stop to see what size). But I did stop to pick up a nice 2' length of slotted foam pipe insulation. To carry it I put it on my top-tube, nad-pad style (it was a couple inches too long but I managed to jam it in there (that's what he said)). Now I have it at work, I'm gonna cut it in half and use it to cushion the two 'blades of death' under my desk that seem to be perfectly positioned for me to slam my knees into. |
In no particular order of preference, other than the first:

Ha, had to look up "kipple", sure is a lot of that around!
Love your screen name canklecat! |
lights, many many many many lights, see them every week, old ones, new ones, working ones, smashed ones, but all cheap
bags of weed, promoting the sharing is caring mentality huh mp3 players, mostly working ones toothbrushes (i never understand this... ) |
And shoes. Lots of shoes. Why doesn't the UFO teleporter beam work on shoes? It seems to work on most other clothing. And why do the shoes often get caught in utility wires? It's like the teleporter beam manages to get the abductee airborne, then, poof! The shoes fall off.
|
Our subdivision is still being built and in the first year living here, I had more flats than I had in the prior 30 years. I find (and pick up) a lot of nails and screws on my rides but the only two potentially valuable things I've found were a car remote with key (still unclaimed despite my advertising it) and a Bible in a case. The Bible had the owner's name embossed and even though he doesn't live in our sub-division, I advertised it and someone recognized his name and we got it back to him.

Best find ever: Was on an organized tour 2.5 years back or so and met up with the group. We started riding and set up camp that night. Met a lovely woman, we spent all evening chatting and such. And we have been together ever since. We are engaged and getting married next year.

I'm sure I've stumbled across all sorts of things that I can't remember - I don't usually pick stuff up and carry it home with me, though (I will pick up trash however). The only thing I can actually remember is a gallon jug of Gallo wine, three quarters empty, sitting by the Fox River. I only remember it because I took a picture of it and emailed it to a friend of mine.

Last night I was riding with a friend after work. We were pushing hard on the last stretch and something caught my eye in the roadway: A $5 bill. I yelled at him to stop and I jumped off my bike and ran back and picked it up. I felt kind of bad because I couldn't share my new-found wealth with him, but as providence would have it, another car drove by and another $5 bill was kicked up from the roadway and floated over to my feet. I bought ice cream with it.

Riding along a highway found some credit cards.
Then a wallet with DL and $44 bucks. Called the guy. He had gotten gas and left the wallet on top of his roof. He was also a friend of my neighbor. He came buy to pick up the wallet and gave me the $44 bucks. |
I just found one of these dog zapping collar controller in perfect condition. It even lights up, so the batteries are good.
If you're in Austin, TX and lost one of these on Parmer Lane, give me a holler!! http://store.sportdog.com/media/cata.../SD-105S_a.jpg |

I ride through the mean side streets of South St Louis on my commute. One of the things seen not particularly rarely is the lone, discarded hair extension/weave. We refer to these as "tumbleweaves". While the common weave, tumbleweavus commonus, is found regularly, I have also seen, on occasion, the more rare tumbleweavus braidus, a complete braided ponytail. Once, also, was seen the tumbleweavus completus, a complete wig on the side of the road.
