Bicycle Commuter Traffic Jam
Well, with the popularity of cycling in the Twin Cities, it had to happen sooner or later.
As I started my commute home yesterday, I just so happened to get stuck at a light rail crossing - as two trains were passing by, spaced out such that I was stuck at the crossing for the maximum amount of time. As I'm waiting, six other cyclists pull up to wait as well.
A quarter mile later, a street crossing, and our "group" picked up five or six more riders. A half mile later, we went by the light rail station, picked up a few more riders, and now we were 15-20 riders strong. This is right where the path narrows, because of overgrown vegetation. Poor sight-lines meant it was impossible to pass. Traffic Jam!!! I wanted to go faster, but could not, because of all the bikes stacked up ahead of me!!!
It was pretty cool.

Happens a lot down town in Portland. Specially off the Hawthorn Bridge. Our newest Bridge for alternative traffic is called Tilikum Crossing and I guess its newness has created wait times, but I think it will mellow out.Portland opens unique bike-, pedestrian-friendly bridge;

Solution: use the traffic lane, yes?
I commute 31 miles round trip, as much as 93 miles weekly, and I never see anyone else on a bike, at all. Maybe 1 guy on a recreational ride near my office every now and then. The Strava Flyby function never shows anyone, ever.

i'd rather be in a jam with cyclists, that will clear up quickly and mostly just keep moving, than be stuck in a jam with motorists all trying to change lanes while honking swearing checking cell phones and sucking down exhaust.

Well sure, I just meant if the traffic lane was more clear than the bike lane/cycletrack (not sure of the infrastructure situation at the location the OP mentioned) at that particular time and place, then that's where I would want to be.

I don't think I've seen more than 20 other riders all year, even guys going in the other direction. Maybe 2 or 3 a week at most, often a week without seeing anyone.

I am not sure I would call that a traffic jam per say. I mean, a car jamup really sucks. But being out with other cyclists, commuting, it awesome. You get to chat with some of them if you would like and you get check out their set up. In a car, you just want to get the hell out and drive. But in a bike, its a lovely issue.
In Philly, I see tons of people cycling to and from. But once I get back on the NJ side, not so much.

That's pretty cool. I'm sure it happens a lot in more urban areas. I'm in the suburbs, so I don't encounter many cyclo-commuters at all. Oh, there was this one gentleman last week that I almost caught up. He must have noticed because he picked up the pace and stayed about a 50 yards ahead of me. We met at a red light, gave each other obligatory nod, and then he turned off. He was riding a Trek CF bike. Didn't want to get too close so don't know what model it was. Pretty cool. That was the highlight of my day.

I only see a couple of other bikes during my commute, but during the day when in Seattle or the east side, I do see what could qualify as "bike traffic".
The Seattle bike traffic is dynamic, a wide variety of bikes and people with a very utility bias. The east side, especially around the Microsoft campus, is mostly fully kitted roadies in minimalist mode.

I feel lucky. I see hundreds of bike commuters every day.

I think the more cyclists we see the better.. I have noticed a increase of bicyclists this year over previous years. I think that is a good thing.

Yesterday, I got to an intersection. The driver next to me was waiting to cross, but a car on the major street was waiting to do a left. I didn't understand why he didn't go. Then I saw it. A bicyclist in the other direction.

Here's a picture of the general bicycle traffic where I went to college. It warped me for life. Go Gauchos.

In Long Beach I usually see none, but then will see 3-4 at a time going in different directions on utility oriented bikes.
But recreational riders can jamb the roads on sunny weekend mornings.

Most I've ever seen on my 15 mile commute was a group of 3 riders together, going the other way, shortly after leaving work and then a lone dude going the other way about 2/3 of the way home. All on the same day. Pretty sure they were all just on recreational rides.
I have yet to see anything show up on the "Flyby" feature of Strava for any of my commute rides.
