Jorts.
I've been commuting in rip-stop or cotton shorts for some time and got tired of wearing them out. Not the end of the world, but pretty annoying to replace shorts a few times per year. Just bought a pair of black jeans at the thrift shop and turned them into jorts. Cost me $2, should be much more durable, and I don't mind the feel of the fabric when riding with tech boxer briefs.
Seems like a good idea at the moment. We'll see by the end of the week. Anyone else doing this?

I have found that riding in jeans is extremely uncomfortable, specifically the waist area. I also found that the seat area of the jeans gets worn out rather quickly by the saddle. Take a look at some more cycling specific shorts that will last you. They are made to handle the abuse that cyclists throw at them. REI usually some fairly affordable shorts, especially on close out this time of year.

I ride in jeans everyday. I've only noticed the seat of the pants wearing out on lower quality jeans that have thinner fabric. I've also noticed it on the one pair of jeans that I accidently bought that have a tiny bit of spandex in the fabric. Those just don't hold up as well as the typical denim. None of my Levis have ever worn out. This is after 3 years of commuting. However, I am a light rider.

Um, no one is doing this. If you don't like mt bike shorts, try some nylon running / hiking shorts that have some weight to the fabric. Pair with your tech boxers underneath. They will be more comfortable and last longer.

There are a whole lot of messengers in NYC and Toronto who wear jorts over cycling shorts/capris/tights.
They do it primarily for the pockets and belt loops.
In winter, Jorts over thermal tights is common enough in Toronto its almost a uniform...

Denim and other cotton pants suck for spirited riding, but for short distances and dashing around town, I don't see the big deal about jeans. I guess if you usually wear dad jeans, yeah, those suck. Skinny jeans are fashionable AND decent for riding around in.

Decent and fashionable? Just give those skinny jeans back to your sister. Short distances, great. My 18 miles commute, not. I think most commuters stick with function over fashion.

As for anyone else doing it- I cant remember the last time I saw someone riding a bike with jorts. Itd probably be 2 decades ago in middle school when some kids rocked Jnco Jean shorts.

Denim = no stretch = no way.
Basketball shorts for me. If jorts works for you, you must be a lot skinnier and have a lot more room in them. Do what works for you.

My work uniform pants and shorts work fine for my commute. In warm weather thrift store active wear shorts work great. In cooler weather thrift store wool or synthetic dress pants work great.

Do you guys live on Planet Big Jeans? It doesn't matter whether you LIKE skinny jeans or not. They're what's fashionable. If you're over 45, fair enough, don't wear them.

Fashion trends are not and have never been important to me. Being presentable and comfortable is important.
Skinny jeans on guys are almost as unflattering as they are on most women. Skinny jeans are good for thin built women and very rarely other body types. Men are typically not built like a thin woman, and as a result they look absurd.
I would mOOse-knuckle like crazy in skinny jeans and my wife would tear up due to laughing so hard if I bought skinny jeans. I mentioned Jnco jeans earlier in this thread- and like I just said- fashion trends arent important to me, being presentable and comfortable is. As a result, I also didnt wear Jnco jeans when I was a kid because I found them to be just as absurd as skinny jeans, only on the other side of the spectrum.
Hey, smoke em if you got em though.

I still wear 501s, but they're not the greatest for riding. Maybe for an errand or a mellow spin with the kids.

I gave up caring what people thought of me in 8th grade.
